She dfinitely cyah stop meh now coz she no more with us but I really did like Blakie and I would sing his tunes then and I still sing them now,in my next life ah coming back right their in TT to win a calypso crown.BTW i had a friend in TT and his surname was Carasco.
I could sing all his tunes when I was a lil boy growing up in Trinidad,I always got into arguements with friends who thought Sparrow was better.Because I, as an Indian boy could sing so good people used to ask meh to sing who knew me.I feel i could have been the first Indian Calypsonian in TT if my parents were not so prudish, they also stop me from beating pan.Ah still love de man.
As a teenager I witnessed the infamous steelband clash. I was standing in front of Scott Furnishing store at the corner of Frederick and Park street..
I pressed myself against the store front and watched it all.Vendors were scrambling as their jars of mauby were smashed. Inspite of it all ,it was better then.in his original calypso Blakie had another verse" ah indian man selling bread shout out lard today ah dead never me again etc.
@cascadura36 thanks for that, cascadura. I remember that verse too, but he must have sanitised it in order not to offend the Indians. he does sing one verse twice to make up for it
@MrMichaelxavier I highly doubt he 'sanitised' his tune. Often at live shows verses get cut for time, are hummed or talked over, or are quite simply forgotten / mixed up (Terror was somewhat notorious for that). Blakie was not a man to worry much about offense. Furthermore, the verse in question was not offensive. It was merely an observation that an Indian man that was selling bread, was concerned for his life as the clash took place.
@TriniIntel Thank you for your insight and polite manner. Very helpful. God bless you and all my people in Trinidad Black White , Indian rich poor God's children all God's children, sing halelujah!
this fight took place the very carnival that i was born in POS general hospital.I remember this calypso when i was growing up. Blakie used to live up in prizgar rd, not far from where i grew up in the Quaidsay (Croisee), opposite globe cinema. boy this does bring back memories. Michael Xavier, Australia
Carlton Joseph was born in St paul Street I knew his Mother Esmee float she used to make the best float in them times float and ackra sell right on corner of St. Paul and Piccadilly St.
Honored I am of meeting & hangin' out with Blakie, he was: compassionate, & very funny often. 1967 Sparrow told Calypsonians to boycott the CDC shows in Tobago. Lord Cristo and others rejected this idea and went. Upon arrive at OYB Tent from that boat from Tobago. Sparrow met Cristo and wife and asked Cristo, didn't I told you not to go Tobago?...Sparrow slapped de shit outta Cristo who just stood there & allowed his face to swell. Blakie came the next night and told Sparrow,"I went Tobago too!"
Steups and alllyuh want to tell me about Machel, look doh get meh vex. BTW you see where Rudder is in the back showing deep respect, look ....... steups.
Imagine this has been a Hit since about 1956 and although we have seen changes in the Kaiso music through these years Blakie's Gems continue to Glitter and remain Enjoyable . That is the Hallmark of a #1 Artiste; his music lives on.
yes i too have listened to this countless times. they still make music like this but it is seasonal and not as commercially viable as "rag to the left, rag to the right", the "songs" that take 10 seconds to make
I'm so sorry. I met and lived near Lord Blakie in Mt. Hope when I spent some time in Trinidad. Back then, he was singing "Yankee Woman." It was the best. He was the best.
Can anyone identify the guy in red singing back up. Is it David Rudder?

That was so nice. Lord Blakie is really a legend. Such greatness. And did anyone notice a similarity between him and Sugar Aloes?

Do you realize that is David Rudder and Gypsy singing back up and they are having a blast with a legend. Blakie's laugh is infectious.
