  • you can ask professional bodybuilders and swimmers who need to eat this much food, just ask them and they will tell you how much it sucks to have to eat this much. at this point, eating becomes a chore, something you do because you are forced to, thats what they are doing, forcing themselves to eat this much because if they don't, their bodies won't be able to work as hard as they need to. many of these guys HATE meal time

Of course he does not swim all the time but you must remember a there is a lot of protein in his diet which you would not want to completely use up.

    12k calories per day? It's physically impossible to do so and maintain performance. Even sumo wrestlers wouldn't consume this much. Let alone, a lean framed swimmer.

  • @DawgFL There's no way. Even half that amount would ensure weight gain, even when training at an 'elite' level. You could work out for four to five hours a day and still gain weight when consuming 12000+ calories.

    Just think about eating the biggest meal you've ever had, say a 3000 calorie monster feed. Then Imagine doing that 4 or more times a day and then instead of undoing your pants and flaking out on the couch you go and train. It wouldn't happen. A little common sense goes a long way.

    if it is then, sumos do workout for 4-6 hrs a day to keep up strength, and they eat about 2 meals a day. but those meals can be as large at 10 normal meals for an average man. and of course the weight gain is good because that is their goal

  • his hunger would go down if he stopped training, and keepin in mind when he eats all that its difficult and he has to push himself to eat all that, if it was easy for him to eat 12000 calories a day then hed be pushing himself to eat 15000, so if he stopped training it would probably be a relief he doesnt have to eat all that

  • i dont really understand how he can eat that way...being an athlete I know you need extra calories, but you need them from foods that actually have nutrients...were are the fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats?

  • @crazyhb4 healthy foods have too much fiber. athletes actually don't need that many more vitamins and minerals, but they do need more calories to keep their weight. If he was eating healthy high fiber foods, it would make him feel too full to eat more(try eating 10 000 calories from apples, chicken breast and black beans). As far as protein goes, I bet all those calories give him more than enough even if it's just 10-15% protein

But all the fast food junk going into his body along with it seems like it would be more than harmful. I guess not. It's also about metabolism and what your body can take, too, though.   • It's not that much food at all. Minus the breakfast it's about what I'd eat, and plus the breakfast is only a little more then I'd eat when I'm doing intensive physical stuff. (I don't quite eat that much breakfast when I'm on the march all day, but still quite a bit.)

    Plus Michael Phelps is a big guy. Big guy + lots of activity burns alot of calories.

  • When most people are in training, they will be taking in about 10,000 calories on average. The "Normal" ammount of calories that someone should be taking in (i like the median is 2,000 on most packaging), it that they expect you to literally sit on a couch all day. If you get moderate exercise, you should be pulling in 3-4k a day. Now 12k is quite a lot, but only slightly larger than any other athlete in the world, even high school athletes. Also about the Fast Food, that's the bad kind of fat.

  • This isn't that surprising. OK, it still is, but it makes sense. The more athletic you are (and the more you work out) the more you have to eat. When I'm working out hard/playing sports I eat a lot more than when I'm just chilling as well. You're just naturally more hungry.

If the food is good, we will not be obese, but healthy. Michael Phelps doesn't need that, since he burns up every ounce of fat and carbs that he eats while swimming.

  • @panda123456789ed I do not understand anything you said. When someone eats this amount of food over a course of 3 meals, it can be very stressful on the digestion process. The body has a harder time absorbing nutrients from the food when 2 or 3 thousand calories are consumed. So eating more frequently , and less would allow his body to better abosrb the calories he needs for his lifestyle.

AND I read in a documentary that he eats after swimming, so his body HAS to speed up the digestion (Stressful or not) in order to replenish the huge amount of lost calories. But ya, it is quite an unhealthy diet.

  • The breakfast they listed Phelps has said he actually ate almost every day for a while. But in an interview he did say that his actual calorie count was more like 8 to 10 thousand a day, and the food they listed for lunch and dinner, he didn't know where they came up with that. But still, 8 to 10 thousand is a lot, and its really a testament to his daily work load.
