@raunet Nice crane. Here in America has same thing. Most them are over weight and if law say that need to be reduce the weight by axle so it will not stress on the street. If the sign are limit 10 tonnes then add the axle will need to reduce the stress on road.
Not all road are strong to handle that massive weight!
i would like to know more about maximum axle weights in the US. Here in Europe this type of crane (150 or 160 metric tons capacity) can travel without a dolly and just with the boom forward. I don't mean the criticis you. but it looks odd to me.
Best cranes around. Talked to many operators that run Liebherrs and they say they are the "Cadillac" or "Mersedes" of cranes! Talked to guys operating Grove or even a Demag and they say they wish they had Liebherr!
The 3rd axle accually is down most of the time. In Canada our road laws are more lax, but not quite like Europe. Larger cranes still use boom dolly's to help spread the weight. The boom dolly axles are spread out as well as the 3rd axle up because in California their has to be a certain weight over a certain distance as well. Its an all terrain crane the back 2 and the 2nd from the front are the drive axles. There are 4 steering modes. Front 3 only, back 2 only, all 5 or crab steering.
There will also be outriggers to spead the weight and maintain stability during operations. Methinks the dolly would also stop the huge boom flipping the vehicle driving cab up in the air whilst driving along roads.
The third axle is only put down once they deploy the crane, to spead the weight out. The two front axles steer, the two rear drive. If the third was down on the highway, it would just scrub sideways whenever you turned, and not help drive. It's only for on-site, where the base will move little, if at all. It wouldn't even have to be a wheel, except they may need to move the base slightly. The dolly is to support the weight of the boom; so you don't have 13 tons hanging fifteen feet off the back.
It has 5 axles- OOoOO (o=lifted wheel) The rear OO are fixed + drive the the vehicle. The front 2 OO steer, pulling the front of the truck left or right, while it pivots on rear 2. Since fixed middle axle is between, it just slips sideways as the front moves left or right. Many dump trucks have a third axle lifted when empty- OOoO It's lowered to spread weight. If it didn't get in the way, they'd just design it OOOO. Any weight a crane lifts goes into 5 axles; it only needs 4 to hold own weight.
they use a dolly to dispurse the weight of the crane over the axles. therefor reducing ground pressure. also helps make the crane more manueverable during transport.
Just a guess, but I'm thinking it might have to do with spreading the load over a longer distance, to keep from loading any one point, such as on a bridge deck, too much.
you're right, you can see in the video that the boom is capable of swinging over the cab, and making it one solid unit, which is how they are usually driven. In states like Virginia there are laws regarding the number of tons per axle, so they have to add extras or spread the load out.
The problem here is Liebherr numbers thier cranes in metric tonnage. You're likely thinking LTM 1220 is 220tons, but that is metric tons. In North America a LTM1220 is rated at 265 tons (imperial). Since your likely using metric tonnage your probably looking at the LTM 1250 which is on 6 axles but here in North America the LTM 1250 is rated at 300 tons. A 220 metric ton (265-275 US ton) crane is the biggest you get on a 5 axle carrier. That should clear things up hopefully.
that's ok with me .we both work cranes and plant for a living that how it is, would be good to talk to you about cranes in the US keepitbrief22 stay safe out there
This is a MAD ,crane,s 3 times this size of this one, travel in europe day in, day out, what,s with the mad Law,s in the US . can some one tell me the crane speck. i thick is around 150 to 200 ton capacitey if that ??. the unit is carrying no ballest and the doll has smaller wheels than my wheel borrow . but it looks good will make look but for there bigger stuff . ex demag service eng still like to play .
I hear alot of crane operators saying that Liebherr's kick ass and are the " Cadillac's" of mobile cranes these days. Would you agree or dissagree and care to share a few things you like or dislike about them over say a Grove or Terex-Demag? Thanks a bunch...
NOPE!!! Sorry bud your wrong. Terex bought Demag a few years ago. The cranes are the same but under the name Terex-Demag. Grove was bought by Manitowoc, Grove is still just Grove just part of the Manitowoc crane group along with National Crane boom trucks and Potain tower cranes, and of course Manitowoc!
that "trailer thing" on the back is called a dolly its to take some of the weight off the crane so it will pass D.O.T. weight requirements. And, the boom of any crane does not sit on the cab, it sits in a cradle that is very close to the cab though, and yes, even 500 ton cranes have cradles! This rig is close to a 300 ton.

Why they don`t use the other possittion to take the crane in the road¿?.I don`t understand, that`s so long for nothing.
elfake 3 years ago
crane has to be transported that way because of axle load configurations as required by local and state/federal DOT
you cannot put X weight on a bridge or stretch of road unles spread on X lenght..

In Europe, home of Liebherr, that`s a LTM 1200,200 T crane, and i don`t understand why you don`t take it in the other possition to go for road,
elfake 3 years ago
In case that in this country exists a limitation of maximum axle loads to go on road, they use a trailer to reduce the load of each axle.
