i get nokia maps too on my mobile but i dont have a GPS.People how do you get the GPS???Do you pay when trial is over???I dont wont to pay its to expancid.Or you do somthing else to get that GPS???Plz answer... :(((
Hey there man, I read your comments and I had sort of same question as somebody before asking "Is nokia maps free?". You answerred that only the voice navigation isn't for free.
Is that the only thing? And doesn't anything else requires an internet connection? So say that I buy (in my case N78) I won't have to pay using my GPS and it's maps if I don't like/want a voice speaking to me?
How many space on your MicoSD does it require or is it installed on internal memory?
You don't need an internet connection; the only thing you'd use it for, which is OPTIONAL, is Assisted GPS. This uses a data plan to get a satellite lock-on faster, but again, it's not necessary.
You can download maps through the phone using wifi or a data plan or with a maploader for Windows OSs. The space it takes on a memory card depends on where you live. I live in Canada where cities are less dense than the US or Europe, and most provinces take up less than 40 MB. And if I remember correctly from a trip I took, a map of the USA takes about 1.2 GB.
And yes, out of the box, Nokia Maps is completely free. Maps are free, as well as searching for locations, planning routes, and so on.
Thanks for the information, it's been most valueble to me. I understand A-GPS is the only option who needs Internet, and A-GPS is not necessary to run your GPS/Maps.
I read about A-GPS on Wikipedia, it gives like you said faster GPS detection and slightly more accurate results. Yet, is this a 'good' option? Does it improves really that much or is the difference with A-GPS on/off barely visible?
It can take me anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds to get a satellite lock-on when I'm standing still, and it can take up to a minute or so depending on conditions. A-GPS usually cuts down that time to 5-10 seconds from what I've heard.
Our data plans are pretty horrible in Canada, so I don't have one, but I don't find the wait times inconvenient :)
so if i used a sony ericsson w760i with its gps would i need internet for that?..............normally, when its not nokia map and u have gps on a celll phone does it require internet to get a satellite signal?
The best you can do is buy a garmin xt and you have the voice navigation instead of spending $100 a year. I would say this phone is better than the iphone because it has more applications and better accesories.
I'd agree with this statement. I don't do a lot of driving, but I use the GPS to get a general idea of where I am, or if I wind up going somewhere local but still unfamiliar. If you do a lot of driving that's dependent on GPS, the N82 is absolutely NO replacement for a dedicated unit.
Regular, voiceless navigation is free as well. You can map routes and follow on-screen instructions for free. But if you want spoken instructions, it costs roughly one hundred dollars per year. I tried out the 3 day trial, but it wasn't that useful for me.
