Oh, and by the way: for those of you that say David lost the voice after he lost the weight- listen to 2:37. This is the EXACT same high D he sang when he was big that everyone was going crazy over.
Michael English isn't mentioned in any of the comments, but his performance on this song is also excellent. Love all the GVB, this is one of their best.
MusicalF, just don't worry about the video quality. This song is an experience to be treasured always and Thank You!! for it. I have never heard such a great version of it.
Just to echo the previous comments, Mark does have a beautiful, soothing voice. And for a quick sample of his splendid blending technique, listen to the end of this song. May God Bless You always Mark.
That's a great story! My roommate and I went together to this concert and David sang "End of The Beginning" early in the show. By the time he was finished we lifted our arms simultaneously and compared the hair sticking straight up. It was amazing. Saw him during intermission, you're right he really is a great guy. You should definitely see this new group though. They're amazing all of them.
I saw them in concert a while back. I don't know exactly when, but it was when David's first cd was out. I didn't know who anybody was, I just went because my parents went. Then, I heard David Phelps sing In The Beginning, and I instantly loved him. I rushed to his table at the end of the concert, I was the first one there. I waited for him, then someone came up behind me and put his arm around me. I turned around and it was DAVID PHELPS! I froze, I couldn't say a word! He's such a great guy!
I agree. He doesn't. What's funny is they were making fun of him throughout the concert about how he is not up to par with the others. It was really kind of sad rather than funny because he CAN really sing. Personally I think he was the GVB's best baritone on the blend. His voice is deep and smooth as silk.
Was this the Saturday night concert? I really wish we could've gone to all three concerts!
I also love Mark's voice! Power *and* a "soothing" sort of quality. The jokes, though...they're just jokes. Mostly originated by Mark himself. Mark is really one of the other guys' favorite singers! Bill was pretty much the first person to take Mark's voice seriously...Mark considered himself a comedian who happened to sing until he was with the GVB.
All of these guys are awesome! And together...WOW! :)
Oh I know the jokes were made by Mark himself. I laughed and all but they weren't as funny as say when he's making fun of Bill because we all know Bill isn't a true Bass singer. When he makes fun of himself it's like "uh... but you CAN sing!" Now when he's making fun of his lack of musical ear and having to have someone give him the note, that was really funny!
Well it IS the Gaither Vocal Band. I don't believe they've ever had a singer that was anything less than great. I've loved all of their baritones. I just think Mark is probably the best blender. His voice doesn't have a distinct texture that sticks out like Russ and Marshall's. That smooth tone is perfect for what he's doing now.
He isn't a true Bass singer as in he has to force himself to get to that lower register. He's really a baritone or more like the in between part between baritone and bass. Where as people like Tim Duncan, George Younce, J.D. Sumner, etc are "true" Bass singers. Bill has even said himself that he's not a real Bass hence the result of Mark/Everyone else making fun of him.
Ah. That's very interesting. I think Bill means he isn't a basso profondo, which are the basses that can sing abnormally low. But it sounds like he can sing a low C pretty good judging from one of the song recordings like, "Low Down the Chariot". Anyway, thanks for answering my question!
Lol. Well, I don't know what Bill's thinking but yea, if you can sing low C's and even B's and Bb's, he is a bass. Maybe when he was younger he had to try harder or something.
Well yeah Bill can sing the Bass notes. But so can Mark Lowry and Guy Penrod and you wouldn't call them Bass singers. Bill will be the first one to tell you he isn't a true Bass singer. I didn't say he wasn't a "real" one. Obviously he's singing Bass for his group then he is real. I'm not saying this to be negative in any way I'm simply repeating what Bill himself and others like Mark,Kevin Williams, etc. have said. That's why it's humorous when they do their routines. Nice to see you Spiderman!
mark lowry can't hit the lowest notes he surely can sing a lot of bass notes and for guy penrod (pitty he isn't in the group anymore) i don't know where you get this from that guy penrod can sing bass :S
like you explain yourself you can say for example that mark lowry can take the parts from david :S so mark is a tenor not!!!
completly out of his league
so when penrod like you said can sing bass then i say it's completly out of his league.
I don't know I've heard Mark hit some pretty low notes. I've actually read that Guy Penrod can sing much lower than has been recorded but hasn't utilized it so as not to "show up his boss." Maybe with his solo career we'll see some Bass singing. As for now we won't know. But go to any Southern Gospel website and they'll explain that Bill really needs a true Bass singer for his group. Have a great day Peter! :)
yeah true that's why a baritone is in between bass and tenor and guy can sing baritone so he sure will hit some bass notes i saw him sing when he was younger back then he was a baritone what a vocal range guy has :S
and bill's warm voice blends perfect with almost everything.
I agree Guy has phenomenal range. I really think David, Guy, Mark, and Bill were the best vocal band. Each part went way above what they're required to do. I like Bill's voice it is warm like you say and it does contrast well with the others. I miss Guy as well but I really think having 5 members makes up for it. And Michael English is so nice and he's really grown on me. I'm super stoked for a new CD! I'm so excited and happy they're already recording.

eumh!!! bill gaither is definitely a true bass singer for certain.
the rest you mention called a "double bass"
when you make a comparisation do it with bass singers and not with double basses.
and goofyguy not only in "low down the chariot"
but listen to "He will carry you", Gentle sheperd
Delivered from the hands of pharaoh etc...
christmas cd Come and See What's Happenin' etc...
He has the range to sing bass and he can hit the low C
if Bill isn't a real bass then i'm spiderman :D

goofyguy1987 2 years ago
yeah i totaly agree
i know when he was younger he sang baritone from 1980 to 1985 and lee young and john mohr took the bass parts when they left.
from 1985 bill took the bass for himself and he knows what is best for the group
and if he wasn't a real bass
for sure bill searched for a new bass then and not singing the bass in such a high standard group for 24years now
Bill is a real bass.
God bless
