A beautiful gift, a time not to late, and even now its not too late, pray God for us, give us Peace, We can live without hate, for every one under Heaven. Thank you Judy Collins and Peat Seager.
Speaking of tv (relating to the tv comments where good shows were on), the way we have to get our tv now is simply ridiculous. And for what? It's true that there really isn't much seen on tv now and when we had to "upgrade" from antennas it just got even worse. It's barely even worth having tv anymore.:(
@GordonMorrice Ehh killing an animal when its in in pain or a person on life support who has it in their will to have the plug pulled, there two times to kill lol

These words are from the Holy book "Koheles" written by King Solomon. Shlomo Ha Melech. Its really called in Hebrew. The book has basically become one of the most misunderstood and misinterpreted. Its actually very complicated. But the meaning of these words is pretty special anyways whether we understand what he meant or not.
This is a song that lends itself well (very well, actually) to different interpretations. As a result musical greats like the Byrds *and* Judy Collins can make it memorable in their own way.
I just want to be sitting there at that table with them singing along! It's such a pleasure to here her voice unplugged with just a couple of guitars and of course Pete Seeger harmonizing. Simply wonderful!
While I think the Byrds version is one of those 'perfect' recordings, this is totally different, and achingly beautiful. Judy Collins was really something special, and brought us a lot of great songs.
Erm.. You have to be kidding... Byrds version better than this..? Each to their own taste, I suppose. But this is a live version... Have a listen to the Byrds live performances of this. Not so impressive... And I do love the Byrds, don't get me wrong.

It's hard to imagine today, with 500 channels and nothing to watch, that in an era when the average American had access to fewer TV channels that any of us has fingers - there were shows on TV regularly where you could hear this quality of music from all genres on a weekly basis. Lots of shows.
@116Bears - Well, I love the Byrds version too- a GREAT and different reading of the song. For me, though, this one is the absolute gold standard for the song, the perfection of what Seeger was thinking about when he wrote it. Just IMHO, of course.
Saw this on a recent pledge drive show....thanks for posting. And - saw her, alive and well and in beautiful voice, recently at a show in Toronto. What a treat that was!
@carocuth That's where I saw it too, on PBS as part of the Folk Rewind package being offered last weekend. Unfortunately, despite my earnestness, I simply can't afford $250 for 6 cd's and the dvd this vid is on. Thanks for sharing, whoever put this up.
Go to the library and check out a copy of the Bible. Find the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament. (Testament, not testicle) Written by Solomon, it's right after Psalms and Proverbs. Therein, you will find the words to this song.
You pushed it too far Senator John Cornyn, in supporting COICA, in the name of God go.
" [Cromwell] commanded the Speaker to leave the Chair, and told them they had sat long enough, unless they had done more good, crying out You are no longer a Parliament, I say you are no Parliament. He told Sir Henry Vane he was a Jugler [s...ic]; Henry Martin and Sir Peter Wentworth, that they were Whoremasters; Thomas Chaloner, he was a Drunkard; and Allen the Goldsmith that he cheated the Publick. "
We may be living in a generation that seems to go downhill now, but I hope and want to feel that maybe sometime in the future, people will know what is actually true and value fullfilled morals and we can live in a time where it's simple once more.:)
We need this kind of music - and people- today. Meaninful songs that made you wonder about this life not that crappy mtv music. Instead of Judy Collings we got lady gaga, instead of Joan Baez we had Britney. Turn, turn, turn and go away dumb and comercial musicians.
I saw Judy in concert back in July of 1971 (Santa Monica, California) and it was probably the best live concert I have ever attended. While serving in Vietnam in 1969 and 1970 I saw more guys cry while listening to this song than any other that was ever played.
Among russian folk singers there are many women who try look like Judy Collins. I have had clear idea this fact about. But Collins, my mind, sings songs as Russian and Scandinavian epic singers, her voice clear and a little faltering one.
The Native Americans call the soul "all of my relations"--speaking of nature. How far we have come from honoring that and becoming further and further from nature and each other. 1969 was a troubled time but with hope. Songs like this give us that hope for a better day relating to one another.
One of the loveliest videos I've seen. Judy sings and plays this so beautifully. I grew up listening to her in the '60s and on forward, still play her music a lot. DarknessxUnspoken: There are lots of people of your generation who "get" this kind of music and message. Just keep being yourself; you'll find kindred spirits wherever you go if you are not afraid to use your voice and stay true.
Dont overlook the sweetness in Petes voice, i dont think I`ve ever seen him happier than right here and it makes me feel so happy that two people can be so gentle and kind towards one another. Nostalgic? Perhaps, but what can be expected given the state of todays affairs in the world?
Sometimes I really wish I did live back then. I don't really like today's society for many reasons and I'm an outcast for a load of reasons, yet I'm glad I'm not most likely how teens are today. And I can see why older people don't really like us since we're next in line to control everything in society itself.T.T It affects people so much on what life's really about.
I love songs like these. You never hear any like this.<3
This is one of the songs I listened when I wrote my book "The Reason". I feel this song was made for Judy Collins to sing. Its purity opens me up and the truth pours out.
In July of 1971 I saw Judy in concert in Santa Monica, California. Never realized how lucky I was at that time but now, years later and in retrospect, I know what an honor it was to have been with her for an hour or two.
I just saw her perform at a benefit concert in New York and, believe it or not, she is singing even better now than ever -- also still incredibly beautiful
@Aladinane86 Sorry, I'm not aware of any guitar TAB for Judy's version of this song. All I can say is that her guitar is tuned to Dropped D (DADGBE), her capo is on the 6th fret and the basic chords are D, G, A7 and Em7 (the fingerings will be slightly different because of the Low E string being tuned down to D).
@rokstargirli I know you have probably worked it out by now, the is a distinct difference in tone between a 6 string and 12. Peter is playing a 12 and as far as I can see so is Judy so if you have a 6string it will sound rather different.
@rokstargirli Yes, I think she is tuned to D but I also believe she is playing the accompaniment to Pete's 12 string, so do expect that it will sound much different playing solo accompaniment.
god bless you tube. to be able to see this, knowing the works all my life of these giants, yet never having seen this before. simply awesome to be able to grab gems from the past....
Interesting that Judy recorded both this song and Seeger's Bells Of Rhymney in the early 60s, and I believe both were arranged by Roger McGuinn. You can hear echoes of this arrangement in the Byrds' version from '65.
...and she wasn't beautiful only at that time and she hadn't a fantastic voice at that time - she is´beautiful in present and her voice is fantastic in present!!
There are some very special moments on Youtube. This is one of them. I was 13 years old when this was recorded and I listened to it on Radio Luxembourg, hiding under the bedclothes so my parents couldn't hear. Beautiful music punctuated by news bulletins describing the horrors of the Tet Offensive. "A time of war, and a time of peace".
Righteous harmonies from Judy and Pete in a memorable and lovely song from the Sixties. A song and a spirit for the ages, time without end. Heavenly guitars and blessed voices!
Life is a gift with all its times and seasons but not all men come to know the purpose for life. If you don't discover that then the seasons come and go with monotonous meaningless and we are worm food with no where to go when we die but death. If there is nothing after death then nothing before death has any meaning.
hicks, you are understood. We can have this conversation, but it's rather off-topic for this column. Just put it into my in-box. I would like very much to hear from you.

Righteous harmonies from Judy and Pete in a memorable and lovely song from the Sixties. A song and a spirit for the ages, time without end. Heavenly guitars and blessed voices!

If it's 1964, that would make her 25 here. (born in 1939)

Life is a gift with all its times and seasons but not all men come to know the purpose for life. If you don't discover that then the seasons come and go with monotonous meaningless and we are worm food with no where to go when we die but death. If there is nothing after death then nothing before death has any meaning.

Don't worry. We come back.

As what and to what. 1 go at this planet under these conditions is more than enough for anyone.

hicks, you are understood. We can have this conversation, but it's rather off-topic for this column. Just put it into my in-box. I would like very much to hear from you.
