I noticed that some of these instruments have been bent at odd angles. I'm sure there is a reason for this, so if anybody can explain, I would appreciate it.
@CBordages I believe the two bent at odd angles are sagbutts, common brass instruments during Purcell's time, and the one that is not bent but has a slider is a slide trumpet, another common instrument.
Someone help me pls. I don't know if these are slide trumpets, or some alteration of a trombone. Can someone pls tell me exactly wat are those instruments?
Henry Purcell was from the Catholic Irish family of Baron Loughmoe, who rebelled against aggressive Protestant colonialism in 1641. Henry's parents were sent to England to avoid the bloodshed of the following 11 years of bloody war, which resulted in the theft of his Catholic family's lands in Tipperary.
Think of how much richer music from the 17th and 18th centuries would've been had composers had the balls to insist that ALL trumpeters use the completely chromatic slide trumpets instead of that horrid, chronically out-of-tune natural trumpet that wasn't worth a damn musically. On that natural beast, one couldn't even play a complete scale until practically in the stratosphere and then you're basically screeching. I can't understand why composers and audiences found that acceptable.
Ron Bryans, you got the raw deal playing the Sackbut, only for namesake that it however. Very well played, but where is the rest? Please tell me there is more?
One can see the evolution of the instruments here... But these sound just perfect. I wonder why they changed.

Beautiful.
And I love seeing these instruments in action! Very, very cool. Definitely puzzling why these were replaced by valveless instruments for a long time.

May I ask the significance of the colour of the players' frocks? Blue-purple for royalty?
Beautiful, grieving music.

Gorgeous, absolutely wonderful music, played on extremely interesting aincent instruments. Pure Heaven, in "blue frocks".
Thanks, from a former Seminarian AND former & current trumpeter - classical, jazz, latino, opera, even the Beatles(!) are in my musical vocabulary!
Love this little slice of "Gabriel's Angel-Food Cake!!!"
