  • Somme.

A word that still haunts evry englishman and resonates through history.

It sums up the futilty and stupidity of war in one word.

  • @4:45 that was an underground mine.

  • Read : "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo; "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Maria Remarque (also wrote "L'Arche du Triomphe" - he was a German veteran); "The Sun Also Rises" by Ernest Hemingway; "The Red Knight of Germany:The Story of Baron von Richthofen " by Floyd Gibbons; "Sergeant York and his People" by Sam K. Cowan; "They Fought for the Sky" by Quentin Reynolds; "Gallipoli" by ________; "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T.E. Lawrence; Poem- "The Soldier" by Rupert Brooke; Peace

  • you are so far off the mark rawlinson16,soldiers do not represent humans, they are a product of a corrupt evil system that thrives on misery death and suffering, our leaders have always been evil, and use poor kids to fight their battles for them, they always make money out of war.research, peace to you.

  • @MrJacko66 surely you could say that soldiers represent humans at their most base level - killing.

And sometimes, although war is always a sin, it is a necessary one, if you are faced with an enemy that seeks your destruction, you have to fight, or be killed.

  • @MrJacko66 On the one hand you say soldiers do not represent humans, yet you then contradict yourself by saying that generals use "poor kids" to fight battles. Those poor kids are humans. They were just like all of us - normal people thrown into a war they probably didn't really understand. For the record, nobody in Britain "thrived" on World War One - it was little short of a disaster for everyone - from the ruling classes down to the working classes.

  • War is at once a natural human condition with unnatural effects on the human psyche.

  • englische propaganda.klar.gegen deutschland.

    englische propaganda.

    schade.

  • A great tune with a great vid of the great war

  • How much have we really learned ?

  • "I rode a tank held a general's rank when the bitch queen raged and the bodies stank...let me please introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste..."

  • poor soles, every last one of them...

  • powerful!! gut wrenching?

  • I'm not going to be going in the army as a soldier i'm going in for a trade as an electrical engineer get an NVQ and HND in Electronics engineering then fuck off out and get in the nuclear industry (EDF are going to be building a lot of new European PWR power stations in a few years). Then get a job at a power station that's where you can really earn some dollar (a long and optimistic plan i know). I know that doesn't mean I'm safe, just saying I'm not going there with the intention of fighting.

  • @borisncfc100 Sadly engineers, cooks, doctors, nurses all get killed on active service. I know u say u won't necessarily be safe but you'd be a lot safer doing your NVQ & HND at college.

  • This makes me worry about when im gonna go to Afgan.

  • when are you going?

  • fuck knows but im joining up very shortly (done the medical etc.) and its a given that ill be going there.

  • Why are you going, youre dieing because someone else wanne make a profit. Why fight some ones fight? Or do you believe the government of the united states is not corrupt by any means?

  • don't go, love life, not death or war.

  • fuckin' hell

  • ww1 never ended it became ww2 my family served in the aif and god bless their souls that i aint talking German or Japanese Lest we forget

  • Very moving. Well done.

  • scary O_O

  • Great song

  • great video, i would like see more colours parts ...

  • A quite amazing video, best I've seen on the Somme. The constant lines of marching men gives one just a very slight idea of the scale of the slaughter.

All those smiling faces, it's sobering to look at them and wonder how many of them would be dead not long after.

Great video. RIP brave lads on all sides.

  • Why this video doesn't get more visits amazes me. It's the best I've ever seen on any warfare subject.

  • Still reckon it's one of the best videos I've seen on YouTube.

  • Aye Dave...when we see these battalions marching along...we are seeing own grandfathers...

  • Whats the name of the Music please?

  • Music: 'Murder Academy', from 'Psycho Drama' by 'Ultraviolence'.

  • Left Right! thats right dudes!!!

  • Good job they did do some left right fingers otherwise you'd be speaking fucking German by now my Belgian "friend"

  • why did you add "fucking" in front of German? don't you like them? you can't blame them all for the war you know. or don't you like the language? yeah maybe that's it. wow you're a friend of mine? 4 real? I never had a friend called steve. well once there was this guy called stef but he was gay so..

anyway, greetings from the crappiest country in the universe that will soon be split in 2 because of our great politicians. hope to hear from you soon. bye-bye friend.

  • Why is everyone so down on war? It has ots fun parts.

  • you must have seen the real stuff

  • yea man it kicks ass!

  • great video

  • Every war should be a lesson to all of us and that includes the leaders but it will never change, tribal warfare is the major occupation of the human race and always will be, the nature of the beast i'm afraid, slightly evolved apes. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but just maybe these guys paid the price that will click the Human races mind into shape sometime in the very distant future.Hopefully sooner but i don't hold out much hope. Sad but true. Peace for fucks sake!!!

  • fuck me..those guns are HUGE...

  • cool music, and thanks for the vid, Dontwalkwalk.

  • That homosexual coward General Hague should have been dragged down to lead the men into battle.

  • marching to what glory?

  • por lads, thay payed the ultemat price. R.I.P

  • Put those chests out? keep it in ,smaller target!. Lions led by Donkeys.

  • Vive la France, mon grand pays!

  • vive le canada..Mon pays!

  • C vrai que tu as un prénom purement français!!!

  • Can't understand why anyone would volunteer for such horror.

  • Nobody knew. Everyone thought that it was still like Napoleonic Warfare, which ended quickly and you died heroicly and fast with neat little bullet wounds or swordslashes. Both sides also faked videos of the front to nake it look more heroic (such as quite some Somme footage, the one with the soldiers charging over a mudhill is proven to be fake)

  • King and country, if you didn't some bitch in town would send you white feathers basically calling you a chicken. I hope they felt pleased with thierselves sending another poor soul to end up with his bones sticking out of the mud.

  • noob somme is a river

  • noob, there are several towns called Somme, and there is also the river Somme.

  • For further information:

    Somme Vesle

    Somme Suippe

    Somme Yèvre

    Somme Tourbe

    Somme Bionne

and then of course the river Somme

  • I live in Somme ;) My city was almost completely destructed during the two wars...

  • Both sides just should have told the rulers to stuff it and walked. QUESTION THE NATURE OF YOUR ORDERS!

  • the most pointless war ever

  • IDK Vietnam was pointless also...But not as many people died...

  • I saw those clips of shell shock (PTSD) victims in a documentary once. The guy 2nd from the end was a French soldier, he'd bayoneted a German in the mouth.

  • Wow, imagine living with that?

  • 'Good-morning; good-morning!' the General said

When we met him last week on our way to the line.

Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of 'em dead,

And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.

'He's a cheery old card,' grunted Harry to Jack

As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack.

    . . . .

But he did for them both by his plan of attack.

  • gassed last night and gassed the night before gonna get gassed tonight if we never get gassed any more when we`re gassed we`re sick as we can be `cos phosgene and mustard gas is much too much for me they`re warning us, they`re warning us one respirator for the four of us thank your lucky stars that three of us can run so one of us can use it all alone.
  • hush

    here comes a whizzbang

now you soldier-boys get down those stairs

    get in your dug-out

    and say your prayers

    hush

    here comes a whizzbang

and its making straight for you

and you`ll see all the wonders of no mans land

    if a whizzbang hits you!

  • HUSH,

  • Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

    In Flanders fields.

  • IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

    In Flanders fields.

  • Hello L***, It's you mate Jonny's son...! You can call me Ryder, this has to be by far my favorite video...!

  • this is the first time that a see a video with a vet of the great war suffering psiquiatric problems, and this is as u could see a terrific and horrible experience, makes u think that probably this war was the begining of horror in the human kind.

  • my grandad was there ,he never talked about it,i can see why

  • lol at 3:46 the howitzer's concussion knocks off a gun crew members helmet.

  • such terrible suffering ...

  • Jesus Christ. Shellshock is terrible. I simply can't imagine the horror those men went through.

  • do you know what mine that was that was shown?

  • Hawthorn Redoubt Mine

Was blown 10 minutes before the main attack on Sat July 1st

Excellent guest house over looks the site today - lesgalets (dotcom)

  • gobbiner it must of been hell on earth.. the fact that world war 1 vetrans would never ever talk about war can just make u think.. what would make a man crazy like that.. i cant even begin to understand what they went through.. i think i would just of rather died in the battel than have to live like that.. they are basicly walking deat.. god i makes me sad

  • all them men died for fuck all,war to end all wars tell that 2 the asian terriosts scum who are tryin 2 kill white english

  • World War One. Possibly the most dirty war ever fought. :(

  • In all senses mate...

  • great footage...the wars back then were so incredibly brutal (not that they all aren't, but the numbers dont lie) i'm surprised we didn't hear more about the havoc it wreaked on their minds...sad b/c there probably weren't a lot of options back then. war really is hell.

  • War is hell. If anyone tells you otherwise, he is either lying to you, or crazy.

And that goes for all our "glorious leaders" too. Whether they be political or religious leaders. You don´t see them out on the field for some odd reason.

  • And for some us, hell can be a wonderful place.

  • And for some us, hell can be a wonderful place. "

Friend, your idea of Hell and mine are evidently the opposite. What these "lads" went though is no doubt a hell on earth, but no as bad as the "second death" God bless these poor fallen souls!

  • Of course, everyone who has fought at the frontline in WWI (or other wars) encountered horror no human being is willing to experience in his lifetime. And for those who returned home, physically and mentally broken, it wasn't even over yet.

"And for some us, hell can be a wonderful place."

This sentence isn't regarding the sufferer.

  • PS: What exactly do you mean by "second death"?

  • This isn't the song Psychodrama this is Murder Academy.

    O:

  • that was a crazy war that was crazy going up in the trenches for yards and going back yards. War is not good in any means. Trench warfare is = to death!

  • wtf is wrong with the people at the end?!

  • Sadly it is shell shock, Or what is called today (Post traumatic stress disorder) These men didn't have the same benefits that todays soldiers have? Life in the trenches was 90% boredom and 10% sheer terror. We cannot see what they have seen, Thank God.

  • Sadly, the British army never recognised shell shock,, while all other armies did, the Brits were more often than not shot at dawn for cowardice..thankfully, we cant imagine what those poor guys are going through.

  • Never recognised shellshock? What are you on about? There were entire hospitals dedicated to shellshock victims, books and reports were published, Wilfred Owen had shellshock for gods sake. Very few were shot for cowardice, stop repeating myths from decades ago.

  • Sometimes worn-out soldiers were shot; there was even a VC winner who went before a firing squad. And some German Iron Cross winners got the same fate.

  • That's not what you said. YOU said 'the British army never recognised shell shock,, while all other armies did, the Brits were more often than not shot at dawn for cowardice'. Both these statements are completely false, you deluded haflwit.

  • The british army was far from cowardly

  • This is not about entertainment or psycho drama - it's about why we are living free and comfortably; my generation worries about getting home through traffic and rain; they worried about staying alive through waist-high mud and German machine-gun fire.

Although so many died, Churchill's comments post-Battle of Britain apply here too.

  • 4:35 Big bertha. shelling paris . 14 KM distant away.

  • Very nice use of Ultra Violence "Psychodrama", sad to see all those souls march to their graves. Look up "North Korea Goes Bang", interesting also, the music in it is over 12 years old as well. Good job, excellent montage..

  • a lot of footage ive never seen before 1st class f.g.a.u

  • This is by far one of my favorite albums of all time. Love psycho drama!

  • This is really awsome footage. It showes the grim reality of a full-scale war in real life footage. With huge cannons blasting, tearing up the ground and the brave soldiers' moral, and men dying. This espires both awe and dread to me. To think my great-grandfathers (probably a misspelling there),like so many others', died on those great battlefields fills my heart with pried and sorrow, for those trenches where not a good place to be in. At least they died like my ancestors did, in battle.

  • looks like a rock video, good shot of railway gun fire

  • "...the government hospital in Marion, Indiana, 1,800 of these boys are in pens! Five hundred of them in a barracks with steel bars and wires all around outside the buildings and on the porches. These already have been mentally destroyed. These boys don't even look like human beings. Oh, the looks on their faces! Physically, they are in good shape; mentally, they are gone"."

WAR IS A RACKET- Major General Smedley Darlington Butler- United States Marine Corps 1891-1940

  • "So much for the mentally and physically wounded...they paid with heartbreaks when they tore themselves away from their firesides and their families to don the uniform of Uncle Sam on which a profit had been made...they paid for it in the trenches where they shot and were shot...where they slept in the mud...with the moans and shrieks of the dying for a horrible lullaby. So...I say, TO HELL WITH WAR"!!! Major General S.M.D. Butler- U.S.M.C.

  • I hate to say this, but this video is depicting the battle of the somme, in 1916, there were no U.S troops in France untill 1917, sorry to shatter the illusion, but the commonwealth countries were fighting the war 3 years before a U.S soldier set foot in France. The reason the yanks were called dough boys is because they were needed in 1914, but didnt rise untill 1917.

  • Shell shock too...This is the best montage I have seen in a very long time(believe me, I see these documentaries every day). Can someone tell me more about the soundtrack? Thanks again.

  • shell shock...
