The US gov should not spend another dime on defending Europe. If Europe wants a military, let them spend for it.
Having said that, even though Europe has very little military expenditures, they STILL are in massive debt and can't afford their own socialist health care program. Not only that, but the quality of health care is poor, the quality of expertise is poor, The infrastructure and tech has shortages and is subpar, and they have a shortage of medical professionals (as expected).
@antimarxism Greece and Ireland are in debt, but the first nation in the world to have universal healthcare 130 years ago, Germany, has a better economy right now than the US has. Germany has "socialist" health care, and its a huge boon. Also, Vlad is full of shit when he says the Canadian healthcare system "sucks." Its far better than US healthcare by every single indices except one or two, and the Canadians pay far less for their superior healthcare.

Again, you are either wrong, lying, or in denial.
@antimarxism Lastly, Europe doesn't need to defend itself against anyone or any nation since few of those countries go bombing the poorest nations in the world. The only minor violent, foreign threat to the US and Europe is terrorism, but that doesn't need an army to defend against.
You're wrong about healthcare entirely. Every West European nation has much better healthcare than the US, and all of them pay much less than we do.
Of course health care costs are lower, when you have shortages of medical professionals and equipment, subpar equipment, subpar expertise/quality, extensive waiting lists, politially determined cutoffs, etc...
@antimarxism You brought up the defense of Europe, that's why I mentioned it. Look at your previous comment. You've been lied to about Europe's healthcare. They don't have shortages like you believe. Besides, 50 million Americans have zero healthcare, and tens of millions more are underinsured- that's rationing far worse than anything in the whole developed world. Tens of millions of Americans are effectively on an infinite waiting list.
@antimarxism If your that stupid, I'll name one; my mother. My mother has no healthcare. Too much income to be eligible for Medicaid, not enough money for a private insurance plan. I'll leave you a message to come to the fundraiser if she gets hurt and has a $10,000 ER bill. That isn't possible in Germany. Also, I'm not suggesting Germany's healthcare is perfect, no system is, but its miles better than America's. We are losing jobs to Canada because of their better healthcare.
@spartan2600 That has nothing to do with capitalism. Its got to do with American politicians being unable to come to terms with a normal health service.
@louiscfc93 Our healthcare system is only good at one thing, generating profits for capitalists. The reason many countries have not-for-profit insurance is that they needed to destroy the healthcare profiteers to allow all the other industries, especially manufacturing to flourish. That is why we have the most profitable drug and insurance companies, but most of our manufacturing jobs have gone to Mexico, Canada, China, Germany and others.
@spartan2600 Once again that is not capitalism. That is corrupt, greedy human beings. Are you suggesting that European countries are socialist because they have universal health care ? They are not socialist they are responsible capitalists
@louiscfc93 Forcefully seizing my earnings and giving them to people who didn't earn them is not compassionate Capitalism. It is Socialism. Meanwhile here in the United States, we have the most compassionate, charitable people in the world - especially the ones with wealth. They voluntarily give to those who are needy. That is the optimal system - not your system where the government has far too much power over our lives and our wallets.
@louiscfc93 Nationalized healthcare is not socialism per se, its just non-profit. Just because something isn't exactly capitalist, doesn't mean its entirely socialist. Anyways, socialism is such a broad term that means so many different things to so many people. To the typical New York Times writer, "socialism" means government control over something, so I guess that would mean European healthcare is largely "socialist."
@louiscfc93 To me and many others, socialism means worker-control, and that would exclude European healthcare. To me, European healthcare is state-capitalist, but state-capitalism is much better than for-profit/corporate capitalism. So I guess we do agree that European healthcare is still capitalistic, but you seem to assume that anything good is by definition "capitalist," and anything that produces bad results, like the US healthcare system, is not "capitalist" but "greedy human beings."
@spartan2600 It's easy to take a word, such as socialism, and define it as how you see fit. What you are describing, in the first sentence, in actuality, in syndicalism. Socialism, by definition, is state control over the means of production.
@ARenofHeavens "Socialism, by definition, is state control over the means of production."
No, it is by *your* definition. Marx believed the end of socialism was a stateless society, and the state was a temporal necessity to induce that end. Agree or disagree with him, you cannot ignore Marx when discussing socialism. In the end though, definitions of words aren't very important, what matters more are ideas.
@spartan2600 Profit has been a pretty good incentive for development and innovation. I see no reason why we should take away that incentive. Then again, your ideology would see us back in the Dark Ages.
@Supermassively Actually, the government created telecommunications, the internet, computers, mechanization, plastics and so on, and yet the people working for the government didn't get millions in dividends.
@StonewallJackson26 Well, the first computer was called ENIAC, was directly created by the United States Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory, and was used to calculate artillery trajectories. Turing, who had more to do with inventing the computer than any other human being was on the British government's payroll when he did all his important work.
Now regarding IBM, which didn't invent computers, but did develop them- IBM was basically a privately managed government appendage.
@StonewallJackson26 The Defense Department directly funded IBM's research budget, the government educated and trained all the researchers, the government told IBM what it needed to be researched, and then bought the products of that research. IBM was all but a government research department. And the same exact scenario existed with Intel, and AT&T and Bell Labs. Besides this, these companies couldn't have done even that without collaborating with public universities like MIT.
@StonewallJackson26 Computers and later the internet and all telecommunications were researched with government funds, then the products were bought by the government, all with government educated and trained and salaried scientists and managers.
This just goes to show how utterly impotent capitalism is without the government.
@spartan2600 How does that make capitalism impotent without government? So far I fail to see the connection you are trying to make since it seems that your statement was abstract and incomplete. Perhaps some factual examples instead of generalizations. This is not meant as an insult but perhaps a further explanation of what you were trying to say.
@ctlex3 In several comments I've thoroughly explained how the Internet and computers were created by the government. That's just a small part of the picture. The big picture is that capitalism is incapable of *significant* technological advances or increases in worker productivity. One of the main reasons for this is that any truly tranformational leap in technology cannot be monetized instantly, and anything that doesn't add to next quarters' earnings are discarded by capitalists.
@ctlex3 It took 50 years from the first computer to when computers could actually make a profit in the so-called "free market." There is no corporation, no industry or even groups of industries that would dare to pour hundreds of billions into an investment that won't turn a profit until half a century and 2 generations later. Only the government could achieve that.
Besides technology, capitalism depends on the government to protect the vast inequalities of wealth between the haves and havenots
@spartan2600 Your mother wasn't denied healthcare, and never will be. Stop lying.
So government motors is your source of information now. LOL! The same company that was in massive debt, due to union thuggery. The GM that is now spreading gov propaganda for its new bosses? LOL! GM NEVER spent 1400 per car on "health" benefits. Stop lying, kid.
@antimarxism General Motor, Ford and DaimlerChrysler have been moving production from plants in Michigan to ones across the border in Windsor Canada
"The Canadian plan has been a significant advantage for investing in Canada,” says GM Canada spokesman David Patterson, noting that in the United States, GM spends $1,400 per car on health benefits."
Most of the corporate car companies publicly endorse single-payer healthcare over our private health system.
@spartan2600 That's what's great about this country. Those people without healthcare made poor decisions in life. In Europe, everyone is equally poor and miserable. Here, you're only poor and miserable if you choose to be - in which case, you have no reason to whine because it's your own damn fault. In Europe, if you made stupid decisions, the government would just put a safety blanket under you and save you from your own stupidity. That's a backward system.
@Supermassively Im sorry but you make sweeping statements like "everyone in Europe is poor and miserable" and it makes you look like a brainwashed republican. Where about in Europe have you lived ?
@Supermassively "Those people without healthcare made poor decisions in life"
Poor decisions, like being born out of the wrong womb, being raised in the wrong neighborhood, picking the wrong school when they were kindergarten'ers? These are the main causes of poverty, who you are born to. Rich people are rich almost always because they were born to rich parents.
@antimarxism Also, its not just Europe and Canada that have better healthcare, but Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Even Taiwan's health system is more advanced in many ways.
I know Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh keep saying America has the best healthcare, but that doesn't make it true. Statistics by the UN, Doctors Without Borders and dozens of other NGO's put the USA's at the most expensive healthcare with quality in the toilet.
@antimarxism The World Health Organization says our healthcare is in the toilet, only the most respected authority on the matter, respected other than by the American commissar class who want to protect the billions in profits our drug and insurance companies make off drugging the living and letting the rest die on the curb.
Why should i have the solution...?

@antimarxism Also, its not just Europe and Canada that have better healthcare, but Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Even Taiwan's health system is more advanced in many ways.
I know Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh keep saying America has the best healthcare, but that doesn't make it true. Statistics by the UN, Doctors Without Borders and dozens of other NGO's put the USA's at the most expensive healthcare with quality in the toilet.

@spartan2600 "quality in the toilet"
Again, you are either lying or in-denial.

@antimarxism The World Health Organization says our healthcare is in the toilet, only the most respected authority on the matter, respected other than by the American commissar class who want to protect the billions in profits our drug and insurance companies make off drugging the living and letting the rest die on the curb.

@spartan2600 No, actually the WHO has never stated that the "U.S. healthcare is in the toilet".
This is yet another lie.
