  • im so glad i did it slowly... I really learned a lot :D

  • anyone knows the tuning?

  • @MrWallerand open C bro

    CGCGCE

  • @MrWallerand B - F# - B - F# - B - C#

  • @azambory Haha fag

  • don't think this video serves any purpose of actually teaching something... I mean, it's more like a showoff

  • if the music is part of your soul there is no lesson to be learned.... you learnt it in your past life and you play it through your present. peace

  • this video should be titled, "you'll never be able to play as good as this. oh and it's his warm ups."

  • step #0 - get a 12 string guitar.

  • This would be a lot easier to follow if the video was synced up

  • 1:14 If you mixed Ocean and Close to You together it would sound like that. very cool.

  • for all of you saying a 12 string is not much dif from a 6 im a experienced guitar player they are /very dif of course with finger picking a 12 string is way more difficult strumming is the same though

  • @PatRosingtonMusic this is very true unless you grow your nails out even a little bit, butler's are crazy long, which gives you not only better clarity than any pick but much better control. with a little nail 12 strings become the most beautiful and fun thing to fingerpick on the planet

  • @scrumbulent His nails are fake, acrylic nails

  • "I'd do it slowly... but I can't" goddam

  • dont mean dis respect to john butlar i know hes a good hearted person but with his long nails and stuff i think hes the devil and can also play a mean fiddle

  • men, let youre nails grow;)

  • tabs for that warm up??????

  • /watch?v=ZP4K-AlxprY

  • WHAT THE HELL IS THE LESSON HERE?.... I SUCK AT GUITAR? LOL

  • Fuck it I quit forever. Lol

  • Holy fucking shit. I can hardly play a 6 string. and john butler is fucking destroying at 12 string. Holy hell

  • @Laxer1313 Hi i just want to inform and not change your view of john buttler, he truly is a amazing guitar player! But on a 12 stringer 2 and 2 strings lays close together so two strings is kind of like one string on a 6 string guitar. When he is holds with one finger on the fret, he holds 2 strings at the time. It is just like playing on a 6 stringer, but with a far richer sound :)

  • @IronPixeI i know, but the way he finger pick's, not necessarily in this vid is incredible. he's a monster. and he usually plays on 11 strings ;) but thanks for the info. much appreciated.

  • Press 5 over and over again. You'll laugh.

  • Ok, John Butler is a fucking GOD at guitar. But fuck me sideways, he SUCKS at being a teacher. Slow down for us mortals, John!

  • noob

  • ok thanks now in 20 years i wil play this as good as you haha

  • I got it all. Now let me just practice this for the next 10 years and I'll be just as good, lol. I like this guy's music, especially the OCEAN piece. Awesome.

  • and that's a warm up 0_o

  • "I'll do it slowly.... as i can: ohmygosh :p

  • Ich liebe ihn!!! ^^ Ocean is so toll!!!! *__* Aber das Video is ja mal auch der Hammer!!! o_O <333

  • Comment removed

  • anyone know his tuning?

  • @1994connor Probably open C, CGCGCE

  • SLOW DOWNN MAAN

  • whats the name of the song? its beautiful... oh wait... he's just warming up... nevermind XD

  • heý_aNý_gÜýs_waNt_tò_chàt_wîth_mÊ

  • LOL 2:42 "ill do it slowly if i can" LOL

  • i thought i was good at guitar......then i heard this guy play :/

  • More aptly titled, "John Butler Frustration Lessons."

  • i have the hittin my guitar bit nailed...

  • is this most of the dvd? or is there more parts? thanks

  • he must be the reincarnation of jesus.

  • This is pretty much useless as a guitar lesson since the audio lags almost a second.

  • Holy shit!

  • What's intro's song of john butler?

  • i think i hate him

i'm off to chuck my guitar in the bin

  • El tipo es un genio a la altura de los mejores, se merece un mejor reconocimiento, invitandolo a los grandes conciertos !!!!!

  • I just saw John live a couple nights ago in Calgary... amazing!! Never thought a guy sitting on a chair could take over a crowd like he did!!

  • can someone please tell me the tuning of johns guitar????

  • @thejazzmachine I don't actually play, but I know John generally plays 11 string (only 1 G), and open E I think...just work with some open tuning and you'll find it

  • @VillianousUndead thanx, i found it... he plays in open C, and mainly uses the C major scale, which is pretty much what he plays in this clip....., he is a legend at improvising with it. for songs like Ocean he throws on a capo and changes it to open E and goes off his testies...... LEGEND!!!

  • @thejazzmachine Open C: E, C, G, C, G, C.

  • incredible

  • not a very god teacher but makes me wanna work harder :D

  • Alright so i like a little of everything musically, but i am mainly into heavier, screaming music. Dave Matthews Band happens to be one of my favorite bands of all time cause they are so talented as a band. The other night i saw John Butler Trio cause they are the opening act for dave. After playing "better then" and "ocean" I am now a huge fan. Thanks so much Dave for having such an amazing opeing act :D

  • guitar part n° 200 numéro collector alors bougez vous le cul pour l'acheter x)

  • this is what i do when im warming up...ok smart ass

  • Open C is the best tuning in the freaking world.

  • why only one G string?? Bueler?

  • @Kzoo7MI cause grls only need one

    duh

    johns a pimp

  • i wish i had his hands!

  • Not so much a lesson but more just him showing us how he warms up

  • Neat; guitar jesus xD

  • To everyone asking what tuning, Johns tuned to, from low to high, CGCGCE. Open C major tuning

  • I'll do it slowly....if I can XD

  • whats the tuning hes in?

  • Could someone tell me how he has that tuned?

  • Which Scale???

  • @Johann759 sounds like a mode to me.

  • Does anyone know what song he is playing at the start (0:06-0:22) ???

  • @LegendaryMusician

you can find it her: youtube.com/watch?v=o31Yx2okJ2k

it's a song for his wife

  • @CapitaineBuisson Dude thanks, do u know any other good jbt links?

  • HA his warmup would be my advanced technique in ten years...if im lucky.

  • @thestormlscoming 15 in my case

  • @thestormlscoming you will be . Will cost sweat and tears and i'm not even close to it , but still : if a human can do it , another human can .

[even thoughs it drives me crazy :'/ ] i'm now hooked on Andy McKee . You want some really hard acoustic shit ? He delivers the goods ... man , those guys are from another planet .

  • @thestormlscoming and i want a condo on this planet 'cause at least , i'll have good music everywhere i go.

  • "all right, step # 1: Let your right hand's nails grow just a couple of inches"

    LOL

  • @sbzpasillas lol, yeah, i think i remember him saying somewhere that he actually uses fake (acrylic) nails now because his would break or wear down because he plays so hard and so often. Damn he can play....

  • @sbzpasillas Haha, his long nails are fake though, kinda ruined it for me :(

  • @sbzpasillas actually his nails are fake, he says that he has a nail salon kit he uses in his truck before his shows, kinda like fiber glass material for his nails thats why they are so strong and don't break while he's on stage, ripping up the guitar =p

Peace love and respect to all

  • what tuning is he in or did he say?

  • @moterdrivin Open C

  • I really want to learn 0:50 part .....sounds sooo good

  • does he use finger nails or finger pick things???

  • @Mrmusicman2000 Nails :) I cut my nails last week so they're not as long as his any more :p

  • i...idk...im not really sure what just happned...

  • @sirpoopaloty Haha i felt the exact same way..

  • Plain and simple. This dude is the steve vai of acoustic guitar!

  • And that's easy for him! If i would have 1/100 of histalent I would very happy!

  • is that drumming stuff even good for your guitar? i feel bad doing it to my brand new guitar!!

  • @Mgillespie11 It's prob not good if you wanna keep your guitar scratchless and pristine. But then you might as well just not play it and not take any risks at all! I say give it some character and pound on it! ;)

  • this video was not intended as a lesson, but, as it says in the description, an explanation of his skills...

  • that fucker is in drop D isnt he? no wonder...

  • @xtMitchellx No, it's open C. There is no "no wonder" here. He's just really fucking good.

  • How to tune my guitar to make these exercices. I've got a 12 string, and I guess if his guitar is tuned similar as "Ocean" song ?

  • @FPLAYER001 thats open c... the tuning CGCGCE... in case u didnt know

  • I appologize for the reposts. Site was being wierd.

  • This is what I do when I warm up..it's just something that's real simple for me and something that a lot of guitarists in other bands couldn't fathom doing. I love John Butler.

  • JBT is awesome!!! does someone know anywhere these notes which he showed (real slow too) must be posted....coz i couldnt understand nething ...lol..he's too slick.. :D gr8 vid cheers

  • probably the best guitarist i have ever heard

  • simply the best in the world!!

  • Wasn't this supposed to be a lesson?

  • so i had my guitar all set up o nmy lap ready to pla yalong with him and then he goesi this is what i do when im warming up thats when the jaw dropted

  • you see how crazy those licks are when he slows them down, JBT is a beast

  • sick skill. wicked sound

  • damn..

  • So he's just messing around in the c major scale it looks like, can any one attest to that?

  • its open c

  • what tuning is he in?

  • This really really sounds like Miyavi! Both guitarists are awesome.

  • amazing training ^^

Does anyone have the tabs for the first "simple" exercise ? even his slow version is too fast for me to see clearly...

  • does anyone no what the songs called at the start?

  • "Happy Home" But it's in the description... along with a link :-)

  • ...I don't actually KNOW why Cobain is (as you say) considered a better guitarist than JB, but I could imagine that this is not necessarely about the fingerpicking or so (Cobain wouldn't have any change vs JB), but fact is that Cobain influenced our music from today HEAPS. All the bands like Korn, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Framing Hanley, Marilyn Manson and yeah well every band that goes into this style of music, they wouldn't exist -or at least not as famous as they are, without Nirvana.

  • Who the hell would make the argument that Kurt Cobain is anywhere near as good a guitarist as JB? I'm a huge Nirvana fan, and I know how much Cobain contributed to music, so I'm not trying to take anything away from him, but damn...

  • @EspenBass

wow...did someone actually make that claim?

  • Really sick hummers and pull offs.. O_O

  • open c?

  • Jiminy,

Then why did you spell it with an "R"??

    Thanks....

  • @virtuosow I am guessing the same reason you did. I had a specific thing to say and made a mistake. If that is the only thing you have to say back to my comment, then I am sorry I spelled it incorrectly, and sorry I pointed your mistake out as well.

    "Peace, Love, Respect"--John Butler

  • @virtuosow I am not so sure that "Leo Krotke" would want you slamming another musician because you hold some sociological fallacy that you are superior to anyone.

It is Leo Krottke...two t's, just so you know for future reference. Have a great day.

  • @johved i think it's "Devil Running" off of Grand National

  • what song starts at 0:50

  • fuck you hes is the best acoustic guitarist around, yeah he is a bit crap at teaching xD and just gets lost in it but to say he sucks ass is like saying you agree with the kkk u make me sick

  • is it just mee or is he not in standard tunnin like wtf how are we spoed to play this when i dont know what tunin hes in.!!!

  • C3C2-G3G2-C4C3-G4G3-C4C4-E4E4

    12 string guitar

  • 1:58 - 2:22

  • well shit over my head

  • OMG!!!!

    O.................O

  • I want his technic for christmas.

  • @joaomourinho lol

  • it is from a french magazine I've got and in the making of this video they it is all improvisation.Only one word: RESPECT

  • yeah this is less of a lesson and more of a show off - but still amazing!

  • how is it tuned?

  • Open C

    CGCGCE (Low to high)

    :)

  • Man, this guy is annoyingly good. " I'll try to slow it down if I can" The man can't play normally, he has to play well.

  • He uses fake nails, right? I can't believe that those are real ones.

  • Yes they're fake. In another one of his videos he explains how he makes them, they're basically toilet paper and super glue, just filed to the right shape.

  • John Butler is the shittest guitar teacher on earth... no one is as good as you John slow the fuck down.... PS (praise john butler)

  • hahahahahaha thats awesome man i feel ya.... "so theres that, for the most part" like its simple or some shit. hilarious- jb is nasty

  • @lsakdhforefljcle hahahaha so true!

  • @lsakdhforefljcle It's not that hard if you just listen to how it sounds, then just figure it out along with the pics:P

  • I caught myself with my mouth open...

damn, alot of famous guitarist could learn a thing or two from him.

  • What was the song at the beginning? anyone?!

  • It's Devil Running off of the Grand National c.d.

  • wow

  • so, question, if i wanted to play the 'warm up' in the beginning on a 6 string, how would i do it?

  • its just getting the hammer-ons and pull-offs clean so you can do your own interpritation of it just up and down the neck :D

  • bro, Six and !2 are almost the same. Only thing i the 12 has more strings, 6 more, and it sounds fuller.

  • you would buy a 12-string and take one string off to make an 11.

  • what kind of question is that? It's not like he bought a 12 and took off 6 to make it a 6 string... seriously what other options does he have? He likes the sound without the 2 string G, sue him.

  • i have a 12 string and its only strung with 6 coz i like the deeper sound o_O

  • should look into a baritone guitar lolz

  • What guitar does he use? not like a 12 string guitar but what model? I would love to try some of that out at the music store the next time I drop by. Maybe even buy one, who knows?

So anyone know what model guitar that is? Thanks

  • the guitar he plays are made by Maton. Its an Australian guitar company. really nice guitars. He's playing one of their 12 strings. im not sure about the model but ive heard ppl say its a 425C/12

  • maton idk what model its really old its not on there website.. goodlook finding one they are an australian brand

  • Look how old it is lol its fading, i do know that he has a i think 1934 lap steel there really nice guitars.

  • Hey does anyone know where I can down load the song he plays in the beginning?

I know he wrote it for his wife, but thats all I know about the song.

  • fucking love jb. saw him live. soo good. up the aussies

  • just warming up, yeah? that was insane, but absolutely brilliant and surely a pleasure to watch!

  • hahha if only i could do the warm up to do the rest :P I'm totally in love with John Butler <3

  • Comment removed

  • i want a 12 string guitar now

  • he is really such a pleasure to watch ! it's beautiful. like.. hendrix doesn't even engage me as much. (sorry but it's true !)

    john butler ftw.

  • He is a genius acoustic musician, puting him on electric would take away all the percussion he makes, he could surely do some serious shredind and so on in no time... but who needs one more metal or whatever plaer if we got someone with his own style and methods of making music!

    Wonderful playing!

  • hes amazing on electric too...you should hear what he does with steel

  • He Sounds like He is playing 2 or 3 guitars!

    Amazing!

  • That would be the 12 string sound.

  • In your opinion they suck, kindly shut the fuck up

  • his acoustic guitar has pickups, so he uses it as as an electric too
