This is just ridiculous. For starters, LBJ wasn't president in October of 1963 when Diem was assassinated. John F. Kennedy was President and made these decisions. Its very clear from reviewing legitimate sources on the war such as "Vietnam" by Stanley Karnow that the US Government didn't want Diem dead, they wanted him out of power. We did support the coup that took place. Johnson is speaking in general terms. He's acknowledging a fact rather than stating responsibility. You are clueless.

Robert MacNamara in "Fog of War" (search Youtube for Before & After an Assassination) indicates that JFK was shocked when Diem was assassinated, because "he realized we must have had something to do with it" - in other words, it was done without the knowledge or consent of the Commander in Chief. "LBJ stood head and shoulders of Kennedy, both physically..." A little trivia: It's been a long time, but yes I read Johnson was 6'3", and Kennedy was 6'0". Johnson also had an almost fatal heart attack in 1955. I think that if he'd been re-elected, it would've quickly hastened the heart attack/failure that eventually took his life in '73. He died the year after Truman.

Deserves more credit? Yes, maybe domestically. The JFK worshippers are like the Reagan worshippers because of each Prez's charisma/persona. My parents were in their late teens to about twenty when Kennedy was in, and they were just 'swept away' by Kennedy. I guess it was because they were young and impressionable. As (bad) luck would have it, Kennedy was killed the day before their wedding.

The irony is, however, the reason the Kennedy administration had him killed was the ambassador to South Vietnam held contempt for him because he wouldn't tolerate Diem telling the ambassador that he was incorrect on how to properly fight the war. Johnson was speaking in terms of the national "we." He meant we as a country. He had no involvement in the Diem assassination. During his VP, JFK and RFK routinely cut him out of the big foreign policy decisions. And while JFK gave the okay on making conditions favorable for a coup, he was mortified that the Diem brothers were killed.

JFK was going to bring the troops home. JFK did not send HCL to meet any generals in Hawaii in secrecy. This meant that JFK was already irrelevant since at least that day, and it was not a loner assassination.

JFK instigated a plot to overthrow & kill SV's Premiere Diem. JFK played politics with our lives in Vietnam, he put his election ahead of American lives. He feared that Diem, who was negotiating w/the North, would force Americans out before the 1964 elections. Voice of America broadcasts called for the coup, JFK had cut off pay to the Palace Guard and American advisors were attached to almost every unit that attacked the Presidential Palace.

This is completely false, LBJ taken in context is refering to "we" as him being VP in the JFK Admin. that assassinated Diem. The infamous 'Hilsman Memo' orders Diem ousted and RFK confirmed it when he said "[JFK] "he always regretted that message, it started us down a road which we never fully recovered". JFK's actions made it a certainty 500,000 troops would be sent.

Diem deserved to be killed- he was a corrupt and ruthless capitalist who did not have a mandate to govern. He passed silly laws like banning Buddhists from waving the Buddhist flag on Buddha's birthday. He ordered the shooting of peaceful protesters and his actions lead to a surge in the numbers of the vietcong and the NVA. After the burning of 6 monks his brothers wife Ngo Dinh Nhu called it a barbecue. Diem and his unpopularity probably helped lose the war. He is like karzai today.
