Actually Toad is stronger than Mario and Luigi according to Mario 2 when he first appeared as a playable character. Toad first became a wimp in Mario cart which was later than the show.

Im just saying there are obviously different classes of Toads on the games so this is probably one of the warrior classes that were in two of the Mario games.
