I prefer Gigli myself but Pavarotti is special as well. I think Gigli understood the mezzavoce even a bit better than Pavarotti did. Pavarotti's voice began to fray as he got older and I think one hears that hear. The pianos are lovely but they do not spin like Gigli's or Schipa's.This may sound like a cut but it isn't. Gedda also did not have this kind of roughness in the pianos until he was way over 60, and even then Gedda was smoother than what we hear here. Do some comparisons.
@deutschefach I'd rather you just enjoyed... Why can't you just say "oh, if you like this, perhaps you will like Gigli and Schipa's X and Y performances as well" instead of berating Pavarotti without really wanting to...
@dip166 I knew him personally am a professional. My comments are not negative: they are observations that if one is impartial if one listens closely. Professionals know how hard it is to do. His Neapolitan dialect was terrible. These songs are all Italian...and great. He could not read music, did you know that? His music was full of arrows. His genius was to make the text and meaning come alive, regardless of his technique. I stand by what I said 100%.
@dip166 I knew him and am a professional myself. He is a great singer, without any doubt. I hear things and pointed them out because they bother me. They bothered me in 1982 and they bother me in 2011. I stand by what I said. I will keep your suggestion in the back of my mind. Thanks
there is no doubt that he is one of the best singers ever and I love this, but i believe he has transposed this because the original key only goes up to an F. those do not sound like F's. I may be wrong
He does a wonderful job, but I wish he would follow the dynamics a lot more. I hear pretty much mezzo-forte and forte. The beginning of each verse is piano, mezzo-piano, pianissimo, where did that go? Plus he's not following any of the crescendo/decrescendo in the phrasing. Plus, the "cerco in van..." is much too slow for my taste. But that's just my opinion. He does a great job with his emotion, though!
I love this song so much! I did it for Solo and Ensemble and received a 1 at State! :D
@performingfreak8 I know he doesn't follow the dynamics, but he was an OPERA singer. He had no microphones and had to fill a huge room with his wonderful sound for most of his life. Also, the "cerco in van" is the best part of the whole song, where since he raised the key of the song he sings a high G instead of a high F. I also got a 100 on this solo All State, very touching.
@aguacun you can get this score and a bunch of other stuff in G. Schirmer's The First Book of Tenor Solos Part 2 (at least that's where I got the score)
Yes, this is in the First Book of Tenor Solos Book II, but I think Mr. Pavarotti has transposed it up a step. Simply amazing! His emotion is what makes this truly remarkable!
@bghcomposer same here! like.... exact same story. weird...:) but I completely agree. He lacks emotion with the song... he could have done soooo much more with it. I mean... Pavarotti was amazing... but he could have done more with this specific performance...
Inspiring. Such incredible control and expression. Currently working on this with my voice teacher. I recently sang this at the Neutral Ground Coffee House in New Orleans.

This is very good.. if you like this you should definitely listen to Leonard Warren's version, it's far better in several respects (on the Video Responses).
Im a beginner at opera and i argued the other day with a girl who studies and sings opera. the thing is she says that Pavarotti's singing is technical and lacks emotion while Domingo is more emotional and i thought that was totally wrong. singing comes more naturally to Pavarotti. his performance is efortless and thats what makes it exquisite, although he's not a v good actor of plays, but his voice is heavenly. We were actually on our way to Domingo's concert. What do you think?
i never get the "technical" vibe from pavarotti. as perfect as his voice generally is, it always seems more intuitive than studied. and lacking emotion? that is a truly wacky thing for someone to say.
