  • I just love his deep voice.

  • Ah i watched the jools h one first and having him speak about drums, unlucky drummer guy

  • @linorf don't you think it's better with the drums though rather than the strings? I do..maybe it's just me

  • @ianwilson2007 I have a huge love for the strings. Think they can make more feeling. To give Cale justice it takes a good song and pull off it many different ways. Equally both good. Agree to disagree or something lol

  • @linorf yeah. Both these live versions are better than the original too (IMO)

  • Class

  • Pur moment de grâce

  • best part from 3:50 till the end *-*

  • @BEsTeSTerderBesTeN i agree really good guitar playing

  • Is it possible to get this version of the song from anywhere? Thanks

  • What a simply awesome version. Much better than on the album.

    Can we buy it?

  • And David Young playing the bass. Funny enough, David and Ollie switched instruments at the Madrid concert earlier, while David did a stellar job on the lead guitar at the Rockpalast concert 1984, with Andy Heermans on the bass and David Lichtenstein on drums.

  • the guitarist is Ollie Halsall, one of the greatest unsung heroes of rock'n'roll

  • Brandon Flowers on drums.

  • Excelente, excelente tema.

Piel de gallina, cada vez que lo escucho

  • excellent version. Thanks.

  • I've been chasing ghosts and I don't like it

I wish someone would show me where to draw the line

I'd lay down my sword if you would take it

And tell everyone back home I'm doing fine

  • FANTASTIC VERSION...Ollie Halsall is ICING on the CAKE!

  • i like that new york dolls lettering at the intro.

  • Welsh

  • WY! = Whooooooh-YEA!!!!!

  • one of Cale's songs that i love most

  • Does anyone know who the drummer is?

  • @SrMoreno

kevin tooley. check recent footage from "certain general" too.

  • i admit i never really heard of this guy but caught the new york bands on the bbc show and when this came on it blew me away absolutely stunning !!!

  • John Cale is my hero. He is a true artist. He's done just about every style. He's produced some great records for other people. He's done cool stuff with Brian Eno(another great artist). He can write great poetry. He can write great melodies. He can punk rock. He can pop rock. He can go far out into space.

He's one of the best around. Left field and passionate. The way art should be.

  • I keep coming back to this one. So inspiring. Thanks mr. Cale.

  • I used to watch OGWT every week, how come I don't remember this?

  • Incredible song by Cale.

  • Played this album to death when I bought it.

  • @nezichov It's different to the album version....I always liked this version better though....but the album version is good too

  • OMG... Where have I been... John Cale your a legend..

    Love your music so much..

  • ...goosebumps...

  • Ollie! Ollie! Ollie!

  • Phenomonal performance from Ollie Halsall. May his soul rest in peace.

  • Very good performance.

  • Better than the original "Intelligence" version, though anything he does live is constantly changing, evolving and improving on its original conception.

  • I listened to this compulsively when I was 15 in my bedroom and again (in my bedroom) now at 42. Still as poignant and perfect now as then...

  • I love this..Great emotions..Also I definitely agree with you lesassassins..

  • dying on the vine= dying on the wine? a great song about trying to escape what we all feel. and the shame that comes with it.....

  • john cale is one of the most interesting and original musicians ever, when you're exploring his long discography you never know what's next, like bowie. he is so bizarre, intelectual and sometimes so hermetic. he can be a gentleman, he can be so aggresive, he has no limits.

  • spot on!

  • totally diagress, i love both cale and reed,

    but the velvets kick ass,

    together they are fan-fucking-tastic.

  • I think that everything he did with Lou Reed sucked, or rather, Lou Reed did. His solo stuff is much better, five stars!

  • "I`ve been chasing ghosts/And I dont like it/I wish someone would show me where to draw the line." Wauw.. good one

  • Just perfect! I am not at all an old fan of this guy, but I fell completely for "Hobo Sapiens" when I picked it on sale. That is a brilliant record.

  • He's overlooked to the extent that the quality of his work has been on a high level throughout his career and continues to be superb. His live album Circus released not long ago is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. Funny, I have a pal who loves Neil Young, Bob Dylan (so do I, Dylan I mean), and to a lesser extent McCartney but when I tried turning him on to Cale his enthusaism goes way down. I think he has closer ties melodically and production wise to Kate Bush than anyone else.

  • God, WHY IS THIS MAN SO OVERLOOKED? True genius.

  • i know! totally agree

  • You must be kidding...this man is anything but overlooked...he is very much appreciated..by people who listen beyond the mainstream.

  • Clearly you have cooler friends than I do. I know lots of people that are very musically savvy, yet don't know this man's work.

I maintain that he is overlooked. He should absolutely be as well known as Neil Young and Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan and the other strong songwriters of our time.

  • I'd put a coin or whatever to that, absolutley underrated artist.

  • one of the best songs of the 80s, doesn't even sound very 80s either...which is a good thing.

John Cale is a musical hero.

  • I love this song. also, John Cale was my first gay crush.

  • I don't think John is very gay himself.

    He's a genius nevertheless.

  • well no, and neither am I, but I gotta admit, he holds it down, got a sense of style. he is, as you said, a genius.

  • @zacbra - interestingly, one of the first gay men I ever met who gave me hope that my musical taste was not ENTIRELY unshared by all my fellow sodomites was and is a big John Cale fan - as am I. :)

  • i like the version on fragments of a rainy season the best.but this one is also allright

  • Amen. That album is epic.

  • i love it. thank you for posting.

  • I just think this song is his very best...mysterious, evocative of European exile

  • This is from Artificial Intelligence album 1985.

One of his best IMHO. And I bought Sabotage Live

for the 2 none live songs 'Funeral Rosegarden of Sores' and 'Hedda Gabler', both will enrich and enlight future and contemporary artists..imho.

  • Yeah, Artificial Intelligence is very good! I think the 80's Cale is somewhat underestimated.

  • It is ! Caribean Sunset ? One of my favourite albums.

  • This is ridiculously good..

  • awesome! I watched this video a few months ago and didn't care for it much. Amazing, I know, but I knew this song only by his solo performance at the piano from "Fragments of a Rainy Season" and the 80s sound of this just weirded me out. Revisiting this, I can say I was mistaken and I now love it.

  • jebate pas!

  • fuckin fabulous!

  • esto es la verdadera música...

  • mitico

    gigante

  • jesus christ what a hunk

  • :) never thought of cale as being a hunk.

that irrelevancy aside, what an amazing talent and what a beautiful song. love cale.

  • Oh he's a hunk awright ;)

  • Amazing to see John Cale from the mid 1980's. Can't help but think of the Cale described in the Nico biography during this time....

  • brilliant just a pity Ollie Halsall's guitar solo isn't longer!

  • Thanks for uploading.

    Is nice to see.
