@ianwilson2007 I have a huge love for the strings. Think they can make more feeling. To give Cale justice it takes a good song and pull off it many different ways. Equally both good. Agree to disagree or something lol
And David Young playing the bass. Funny enough, David and Ollie switched instruments at the Madrid concert earlier, while David did a stellar job on the lead guitar at the Rockpalast concert 1984, with Andy Heermans on the bass and David Lichtenstein on drums.
John Cale is my hero. He is a true artist. He's done just about every style. He's produced some great records for other people. He's done cool stuff with Brian Eno(another great artist). He can write great poetry. He can write great melodies. He can punk rock. He can pop rock. He can go far out into space.
He's one of the best around. Left field and passionate. The way art should be.
Better than the original "Intelligence" version, though anything he does live is constantly changing, evolving and improving on its original conception.
john cale is one of the most interesting and original musicians ever, when you're exploring his long discography you never know what's next, like bowie. he is so bizarre, intelectual and sometimes so hermetic. he can be a gentleman, he can be so aggresive, he has no limits.
He's overlooked to the extent that the quality of his work has been on a high level throughout his career and continues to be superb. His live album Circus released not long ago is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. Funny, I have a pal who loves Neil Young, Bob Dylan (so do I, Dylan I mean), and to a lesser extent McCartney but when I tried turning him on to Cale his enthusaism goes way down. I think he has closer ties melodically and production wise to Kate Bush than anyone else.
Clearly you have cooler friends than I do. I know lots of people that are very musically savvy, yet don't know this man's work.
I maintain that he is overlooked. He should absolutely be as well known as Neil Young and Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan and the other strong songwriters of our time.
@zacbra - interestingly, one of the first gay men I ever met who gave me hope that my musical taste was not ENTIRELY unshared by all my fellow sodomites was and is a big John Cale fan - as am I. :)
awesome! I watched this video a few months ago and didn't care for it much. Amazing, I know, but I knew this song only by his solo performance at the piano from "Fragments of a Rainy Season" and the 80s sound of this just weirded me out. Revisiting this, I can say I was mistaken and I now love it.
I just love his deep voice.

He's a genius nevertheless.

This is from Artificial Intelligence album 1985.
One of his best IMHO. And I bought Sabotage Live
for the 2 none live songs 'Funeral Rosegarden of Sores' and 'Hedda Gabler', both will enrich and enlight future and contemporary artists..imho.
zurapDOR 3 years ago
Yeah, Artificial Intelligence is very good! I think the 80's Cale is somewhat underestimated.
