Pigeons are faster than falcons. I always knew that. Falcons are faster only when they drop toward their prey. In a horizontal flight, the pigeon wins. It has more speed and can move aside suddenly.
there was a debate in melbourne a few years ago, some people thought it might be a good idea to bring in some falcons to help lower the increasing population of melbournes little mascot (the diseased pigeon). of couse it never went a head...but the debate has re-apeared, but this time with owls instead. either way, pigeons are just as bad as crows (always crapping everywhere, and getting into the rubish bins)
pure bullshit, killing all the racing pigeons, yeah they are nice birds, but there is too many these days, I mean if they can fend for themselves, then why RSPB making special nest sites and giving them food, should be able too get food for themselves, hope someone brings in eagle owl on you rspb bitch asses
'pigeon' and 'dove' both refer to the same family of birds, people usually call the smaller ones 'doves' and the bigger ones 'pigeons', but there isnt a real definition for either name.
So you RSPB people, can you tell me why we see more peregrine now than Ravens? Why are the songbirds and some shore birds in decline while more peregrines get released? There needs to be a balance again. Earth worms and bees are more important to the earth, how much money have you raised to save them? Same kind of science that put beavers back in Scotland. Perhaps Manchester needs a pack of wolves too.
Peregrines arent being released in the Uk they are succeeding on their own, they will find their balance when they population reaches maximum carrying capacity. As a side note the peregrine eating the pigeon at the end was a captive bird I worked with back in the early 90's a fair portion of the peregrine flying footage in the documentary was with trained birds.
Don't be silly, Falcons do not even hunt Ravens (they're too big).
There is simply not enough money for conservation efforts on every species. Conservationists have to make decisions about which species are in the most need of help. Peregrines lost much of their territory in the 1960-70s when DDT usage decimated the population. Reintroduction efforts are very successful and cost effective because of the large number of prey birds and reduced DDT usage in Europe and the USA.
Don't be silly, loss of habitat. Peregrines nest on the side of cliffs, not many towns been built on the side of cliffs for the last hundred years. Putting nest sites on the side of buildings is upsetting the balance. More peregrines = fewer songbirds = more flying insects, enjoy!
@bouvier0 Thing is mate, you just don't know what you're talking about. Peregrines are living in cities without being given nest sites "on the sides of buildings".
Go on, tell us magpies are devil birds and give us all a laugh!
nop they are turkish tumbler, evrey body say keep them in side but they have fly and make exercise u know:) some say make noise when the falcon come, some say put a fulute on pigeons cuse falcon are scarey from fulute.. anyway thanx!
don't really care how I write it to be honest, sick of losing my pigeons to peregrine, fair enough it's nature but if so they should be able to fend for themselves without being watched over, there just seems too many sparrowhawks and peregrine now, last year 3 peregrine attacked and killed 14 of my neighbours pigeons within few minutes
@cody3580 Just for the record: it is actually a Rock Pigeon(Columba livia), which is exactly the same species as domestic pigeon. I have not heard anybody call domestic pigeons for doves(which are in pigeon family anyway)
The Pigeon was all like "lifes great" and the Falcon was all like "BAM!!!! Reality just hit you!"

Pigeons are vermin... "rats with wings" is what we call them in the UK. Good riddance to each one killed by a hawk.

There should be peregrine falcons in the big cities to get rid of those flying rats. The city skies would also look quite awesome.

The wood pigeon is also known as the ring dove.
