  • Would love to see what you would take IF you were alone and could not (ever) return. I know that does not match your "modality" at all but, I'd still like to see what you would "try" to carry and how much it would all weigh, if you were FORCED to evacuate to an UNKNOWN area of operations via an UNKNOWN ROUTE ... for an UNKNOWN DURATION ... I doubt you would ever make THAT vid, but I sure do wish *YOU* would ... Consider yersef fully TAGGED, anyhow. Shug's Never Comin' Home Bugout Bag !

  • @phrankus2009 I think I would bring my wife with me......she won't fit in the pack though!

Hope I never have that situation......home is my refuge.

  • @shugemery That is precisely the answer That I expected but not the one I hoped for. you took the easy way out. I think we both know your dear wife would not bug out, even if you carried her. ... Just the same ... as a purely academic exercise, I would have been interested to peruse your logic as applied to this set of requirements. My issue is that ultralight thru hiking allows for frequent re-supply and gear replacement, without much (further) thought. WWSD (What would shug do?) Karma?.

  • @phrankus2009 I reckon I don't dwell on doomsday.....camping for me is a reprieve from the world...dat to day grunt. I always take the easy route! Reckon I would depend on known skills and logic, craftiness, perseverance and cunning.

sounds like a trip I hope to never take.

  • @shugemery Well. I an on the brink of homelessness and many folk have been living the apocalypse for years or even since birth. I wemt out for a gear check on a cold nite and left my sleep system on the bus (fell out and the bus was gone before I noticed). Spent that nite hugging a hand blower-dryer in a rest-room ... not fun as I was really exhausted by dark. Just sayin' dooms-day can be sudden and pesonal ... The IRS can decide whatever they want. Fate can be individually fickle.

  • @shugemery Perhaps I should have asked what was the longest trip you have taken on a single load-out and if the weather or other circumstances have ever delayed your return (home) unexpectedly. How many days could you last, in Winter, on a single loadout, without hunting or trapping ? Have you ever screwed up and been caught off-guard, by really bad weather ? This is not about some "romantic" macho survival fantasy. I am YOUR age. I am talking about probable realities and fragile security.

  • @phrankus2009 It has not happened. Sorry. If it were I have a plan in my head. Trapping is difficult but I have studied books on it....but in the event I get stuck I will have to rely on memory. Winter...I would hunker. Not sure what else to tell you.

  • Yeah, Man ! I *am* just sick of watching your vids BUT Ah jus' keep a-watchin' 'em ... go figger ?! *** "DOWN-n-BACK" !? (LoL) ... Duly noted ! ** Seriously, tho, Shug ... I just worry about *if* the SHTF when I am out there and I just can't get home "soon". Right now? ... I just can't seem to get the "INCH" (Never Comin' Home) loadout perfected ... Most ~durable~ packs weigh over 5Lbs. I am gonna just start with a USGI ECWS Modular sleep system (almost 9 Lbs) and about a galon of water.

  • what kind of folding chair is that in your video?

  • @tritan1 Stansport. On Amazon

  • what do you do for a pillow? I thought I had seen a review of a down pillow you used?

  • @tritan1 It is the only size they have....

  • When you say that you wash "down and back", perhaps you might do a whole vid detailing that procedure?

  • @balloonboyCA I think it can be visualized....if one dares.

  • Hey Shug, really like your vids!! I think I've watched them all now, some a few times. Hey it beats TV, I know I'm not gonna hear a bunch of foul language describing a piece of equipment or how (blanking) beautiful a place is...that just turns me right off! So thanks for keeping it family rated Shug....and please don't stop recording your adventures and shows. I'm sure you've encouraged more than just me to get back in the great outdoors!!! God Bless!!

A bit of the same clothing and other stuff and I'm at 22pound. Not bad but now I can work down on the weight based on your configuration :-) I def need a cuban tarp but so hard to find in Europe :(

  • @AndroidM1980 Always a map for sure. I leave a detailed trip outline for my wife. Trips....I sorta last minute figure it...somewhere as far from the cities as I can get.

  • Another great pair of videos. I have started to recommend your videos to folks that don't hammock camp, just because of the great general backpacking info, and of course for the entertainment value :)

  • @KuntryRD I thank you deeply and kindly!

  • I love when you show us your gear. The wife and I are going to start back packing because of your videos. Thank you for your time in showing us your trips and gear. God bless

  • @KuanTii That is so cool...the sole pupose of my vids are to inspire folks to go to the piney woods.

  • @supertramp71 Ahhhh...the OHM envy strikes again.

  • Thanks again Shug! Another great one! I noticed you did not have The Packa with you. Do you still use it?

  • Hi shug great vid i lurn so mutch and allso i reely like your table in the vid chers

    tully

  • @06butlertul I un glid yoo did!

  • Great videos Shug always like watching them and keep learning , keep up the great work

  • @Smegger I shall...I will and thanks.

  • I think that IS the hardest part of making a video, looking objectively stuff you've recorded. Sometimes I'll set up some nifty thing and have to talk myself into realizing that it did not work and cut it.

Always interesting seeing someone else's pack. Thanks.

  • @UnstructuredExit Too true....I have to cut a lot of footage!

  • Well it looks good whatever you did. I'm going to bed because I'm even older than you. Bon nuit mon ami. It's 11:20 in sector 666--that's California.

  • @guyfihi Roger...glad sector 666 is locked down tight. Secure the perimeter.

  • Shug how did you get that aerial shot at the beginning? You got that thing on a helium balloon?

  • @guyfihi Ohhhh...backwoods twine techniques))))

  • @fatbullets Sure appreciate that.

  • Strangely, I have a sense of joy and happiness listening to this video. I think I will plan a walk into the woods. Hehehehe.

  • @REXMARX003 Ahhh...you focused and payed attention.

  • Hey Shug im wondering where you got your pack from. Is there a place here in Minnesota where the have them in stock? Or did you just take a gamble and buy one to see how you liked it?

  • @tactakill Got it from ULA Equipment. Had to take a gamble. Own two of their packs.

  • That's a sweet pack Shug. Question about your mini tripod: When do you use this? It seems like you're always holding or have the camera on your pole. I go canoe camping and discovered the "gorilla pod". It's a flexible mini tripod that works stupendously. I enjoyed this pack series video greatly. Thanks for taking the time Shug.

  • @Miat62 I use it for long shots....more than one would think.

  • Hey Shug,

What do you keep in your cook kit? pots cup stove etc. Also what condiments do carry?

Thanks for sharing your load out.

  • @osgkar I'll show it alone sometime. I carry Texas Pete hot sauce.

  • I think your right, so many people get so hung up on the "lightest" pack when what we are really searching for is the "rightest" load. Being comfortable in the woods without killing yourself with weight. Another outstanding job.

  • @kycanoecamper Good way to put it. Right good.

  • No "corn", in this video Shug... just some darn good advise! And now, your adding music, real live music... too!! I'm loving the music "bonus" ... Thanks Shug for being who ya are... and opening up your soul, to all of us..!! More Hammock Forum vids too...you guys are a hoot ...

    Aloha!

  • @HanaleiSurfrider1 I was corn free...as free as the wind blows......

  • LOL nice vid man. When you blew the whistle my pomeranian went nutz....lol

  • @ReeperzOutdoors Sorry doggy! From Shug.

  • I think I'm gonna' buy a husky to carry my pack...haha! Whataya' think of that eh buddy?...hehe! That is definitely top shelf man! I can always get a laugh watchin' you man :o) Stay young eh :o)

  • @Ggreenvideos Bet you got one up in the Yukon!

  • @shugemery Lots of good retired sled racing dogs up here from the Yukon Quest and Iditarod but they're all little guys built for speed. Not like the old days! I want a big sucker that eats 70lb of food a day...hehe! I want him to haul/pull lots of weight :o) Don't care how fast he is...haha! I'll just feed him rotten carcasses...haha!

  • @Ggreenvideos You could ride him to the woods....

  • @shugemery Haha! That too!

  • I would like to see you review one of them crank battery chargers.

  • @AlanMolstad If I had one I would. I wonder about them.

  • I'm an inner thigh guy myself. lol

  • @SwitchbackOutdoors Haaaa...I am a heel guy.

  • Isn't that knife a little small to take down a bear?

  • @chitlinray It may not but he will leave bleeding!

  • Absolutely watch your video an use the CC option with the transcribe feature. It's a little funny what you think you're saying.

    Allah is doing what?

  • @McHenryAnge I've gotta get me some of those "impaired insulated underwear"

  • @McHenryAnge I got to try that....must be weird.

  • Shug, two things; first was that a smoker in the back ground? Second I've had my Petzel Tac Tikka XP for over 7 yrs and have used it daily since purchasing. Hunting, setting up camp, reading, working on ?, pre tripping vehicles etc. I agree it is an outstanding light, replace the head strap once that's it!

  • @cre8tivesolutions I bought that from a feller in NC....wood and gas mix.

  • @shugemery Need to see a vid with that thing up and running!!!! Mmmmmm making my mouth water thinking about what wonderful backpacking meals can come from it.

  • Great video, as always.

  • @aboyd45 Mucho Obligato!

  • Thanks for sharing, it's always interesting to see how people pack. Helps me learn new ways of doing things.

  • @Cphobes For that I am glad.

  • I have me thinking I should put off buying "another" rifle that I dont need and getting a hammock. Great video and great music.

    Schmoo

  • @MichiganTNP 'Preciate it Schmoo.....yeah, get one and try it.

  • I have NO life, nothing better to do>>>

  • @windflags Nor I......

  • Great look at your gear. That pack cover is awesome!

  • @Dieabolish I thank my buddy Dutch for the pack cover.

  • Real treat to see part 2 when Kathy and I got back from date night! Learnt me some stuff pal!

  • @RallohE Ahhhh.a date. Good feller!

  • Arms too short, sore joints, diarrhoea, heart burn, sounds like me :-)

  • @ekhaat Haaaaa.... heartburn for sure.

  • Thanks Shug for not only showing us what you take but how you pack it, that's a whole lot o packin for a tiny amount o weight.

  • @MrHatManS True...but a lot of my stuff is light...including my money clip.

  • Thanks Shug, for showing not only what you say you take but actually how you pack it.

  • @MrHatManS Thanks....someone requested I show the putting in part.

  • Shug,

I gotta tell ya man I really get alot out of your videos. Thank you very much. If you're every in PA lets hit the trail.

  • @223rocks Will do....and I'm glad you got something out of them.

  • I captain....but does she have warp drive?
