Is the ice still in the river ,are the ole folks still .the same, and by the way did she mention my name. What profound lyrics,he came to us at the perfect time in history,And the world is a better place for it.
This is a great United Artists version of this song like all the rest of his early hits. If you can purchase any of his early work on United Artists do so as this is the best raw, austere and hungry versions of his early hits sans percussion. Later he re-recorded many of his hits in defiance of United Artists. However, his originals on United Artists were the best.
This is a perfect song. I love Gordon Lightfoot's music. However, this is my favourite song of all of his work. I love the fact the entire song is played in this version. "Is the landlord still a loser?" is such a great line!"
Met Gordon several times when I worked as a DJ, Grand Rapids, Detroit and seattle. He has to be one of the greatest song writers and singers of all time. When he sings a song like this, those of us that are wonderers and left our home towns get choked up listening to this song. He has other great ones, too. Joe Giannunzio
After first hearing Gordon sing this at the Mariposa Folk Festival, it has stuck with me ever since, and will always remind me of my first true love, who was born in Owen Sound ( 5th St East) and went on to teach at Pauline Johnstone High School in Brantford, Ontario (circa 1964). Where-o-Where are you Mary?
Do you mention my name?

Better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all?
@DaddyLawBucks wrote: who the heck are the people who gave a thumbs down to this classic?
Answer? - probably forlorn lovers who do not have the inner strength to carry on long after losing a loved one to someone else.To be honest, it took me a long time, but now I am older, I have made peace with my inner self, and so I can listen to those songs that were a large part of the times in my life that helped define who I am.
@leelewisesq "Gordon Lightfoot wrote the soundtrack of my life"
Truth. When I was 10 (1975) I was listening to GL every day, collecting everything of his I could afford. I don't think there's been a better songwriter in folk or pop since.
@leelewisesq He wrote the soundtrack to many more people's life than you can ever imagine. That's why his Lp's sold so well, while also almost drinking himself to death. There is a price to be payed in writing such deep penetrating lyrics.
@DIVERSITYRECESSION3 Yes, but that doesn't mean it's a good film. Once someone has paid for the ticket it goes down as a sale, regardless of wether they liked the film or not, ken?
@DIVERSITYRECESSION3 So just because people come from different places and have different tufts of information you narrow-mindedly call them 'asleep' ? Seems a bit convenient.
Gordon Lightfoot has sometimes been called the Canadian Hank Williams. He is truly a great songwriter. But this tune was without a doubt taken from a Hank Williams tune called " Won't you sometimes think of me".
Could you possibly post "Salute" (We've Got a Lot More Livin' To Do), and "The List", and "High and Dry"? They're tough to find, and it would be much appreciated!
Having been privileged to see Gordon at an unplugged festival in upstate NY and shaking his hand, I found inspiration for my own compositions. Maybe you should try less reading into it and just enjoy the music for what it is, a creative piece that certainly inspires me to move on......we all have our demons, don't we?
The perfume that she wore was from some little store on the down side of town
And it lingered on long after she'd gone, I remember it well.........
I have one version of it on a 3 disc set called The Original Lightfoot but I have no idea if it is still available. One of my favorite songs by this lovely man ☺
Thank you very much I wanted to listen to the whole song listened to your cover first it was good then listened to the original. I have been a Lightfoot fan since 1968 I was introduced to his music by my ex who was also from Orillia ON. Canada. Lived two streets over from his parents.
I first heard of Gordon in 1968 through a friend in LA. About 10 years later I saw him in person at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento. Always great.
@dowling1981 yes of course, GL's life reflected unrestrained physical and psychological violence from beginning to end. I particularly recommend everyone listen carefully to "Softly" for unmistakable clues of sociopathology, pederasty, violence, satanism. On the other hand, I might be kidding. :-/
@HappyTexanYes Just because he was a fan of such cruelty does not make it acceptable to express it in the undertones of this song. Why do you just accept it?
@dowling1981 Wellll...everyone knows that GL went through periods of extreme fallibility in his life, but I am not going to judge since I've done a few things I'm not so proud of either. Like all the best lyricists, Gordon's songs reflect the full spectrum of the human experience. They hold it up and help us see it clearer. And I am grateful for music like that.
@dowling1981 - read the lyrics again...there is no violence or abuse. If you see violence, perhaps you should avoid such wistfully nostalgic songs in the future. I see not one phrase which portends abuse or violence. I had a place in the Canadian Tier. and can relate to the icy river, roof leaking and hockey teams being "on fire" (really good). I also have past loves that I wonder from time to time if they ever "mention my name". I think you are looking for zebras in a herd of mules.
@TyteFystedFolkie You are getting personal, and that causes great regret. Why hath you bestowed upon yourself the role of 'apologist' when it comes to Gordon Lightfoot's violence?
Thanks for placing these on youtube. I like many others have been a long time fan of Mr. Lightfoot. I recall vividly the Detroit Riots. I was living in upstate NY and feared for my parents safety. If you have it ,could you put Patriots Dream on youtube? Mr. Lightfoot does his usual best in describing the personal horrors of war. I believe it was on the Don Quixote album.
