it is leyte version, so it's authenticity is not anymore preserved... ganda naman, pero kapa malongmalong should depict a group of females... meron atang separate na dance na panglalaki...?
@migencluz nag cross over na ang leyte they breed it with ballet..which they did justice nman kasi magaling talaga sila ..so this is ballet with folkloric roots.kaso yung pag lagay lang ng cloth sa buhok nila ay pamaraan n lalaki.may ibang ginagawa ang babae jan.
Kapa Malong-malong is a dance of Maranao WOMEN that showcase the different ways of wearing the Malong. This dance is never a kapa malong-malong and it s not any dance of indegenous people of Mindanao. We have to be sensitive to the culture of people. If we dance we have to see to it that there is originality and authenticity. Dances are not just moves but rituals that represent people's identity. If we prostitute such dances, we disrespect the people and their culture...
I VERY MUCH AGREE WITH LATESUKIYAKI, THESE CHOREOGRAPHERS THINK THEY OWN THE DANCE AND WANT TO CHANGE IT TO THEIR TASTES, THEY SEEM TO FORGET THAT THESE DANCES TOOK CENTURIES TO BE PERFECTED AND PRESERVED BY THE MUSLIM ETHNIC GROUPS, THEY SHOULD CONSIDER THE DANCE'S HISTORY AND IDENTITY OF THE PEOPLE THESE DANCES REPRESENT AND NOT THEIR SO CALLED "ARTISTIC PROWESS".
@migencluz ..oh? bayanihan? sobra silang mang eklat..alam ko yun kasi ramon obusan ako. ang sayaw nilang kalingga ang bahag ifugao..now trust them mali mali ang costume nila.
I couldn't agree more finally somebody said it right. Philippine dances should be preserved much like their Indonesian and Thai counter parts who have strict rules for performances. Finally someone who gets it. You cannot alter steps and movements simply to make it more fancy. You can use your artistic ability to interpret the original dance steps given.
@topherpadilla you should not be so condemning of this version of the dance. it is a an artistic interpretation of the Kapa Malong Malong.and is, I'm sure, not intended to desecrate nor ridicule the original Muslim version. I'm pretty sure the original version showing the various ways to don the malong is not as entertaining as this one.
Our apologies for the wrong tile made by Zebra on the dance. LDT usually create its repertoire in a suite and gives title to it. This dance is from the suite "Mindanao Sketches". The use of malong in a creative style is one of the handiwork of LDT. We do not dance the traditional and does not claim that our dances are so. However. we understand this info on the titles made by Zebra in all of what you see in YouTube are misleading. Thank you viewers. Hope you enjoy the dance per se.
The interpretation is TOO STYLIZED with steps that are not authentic. This is not the kapamalong malong as written in dance books. They should say that this dance is BASED on Kapamalong-malong. This might appeal to those who are not aware of the real dance steps and to those who like fambouyant theatrics.
hehehe hindi kombong ang gamit ng boys. "Musala" yata tawag diyan. Nilalagay nila sa may balikat nila to show na warrior or "strong" sila. Ang kombong yan yung nilalagay ng mga babae sa ulo.
Arousing performance pero too modernized. Di na nakikita yung Maranao culture. From Lanao, I can tell.
nice dance and nice dancers.. kudos to u guys. but unfortunately kailangan in a proper muslim dance way to.nagmamalong din ang girls pero sa dance na to e sadyang hindi siya nagmukhang kappa malong malong.. masyadong naging pang theatro lang and dance and too much graceful para sa boys.sana binaliktad na lang.ang boys ang nagmalong at girls naman un naka kombong-- kombong un gamit ng boys di ba? :) nweiz i like the dance as a dance only and its choreography but i dont like it as a folk dance..
hahay... kadaghan ug satsat oi... i give these dancers and the choreographer credit since they are able to showcase some aspects of the Philippine Culture. I am not familiar with the dances myself... but I think they are great...
hey the steps were not for the kappa malong-malong..have you made a study of the steps???it seems that it is not a muslim dance..actually im from mindanao,,and i haven't seen any muslim dance like this with the malong!!!
i greatly disagree with ilovedancing888, hindi naman ang pagiging naked mila ang issue e..eto yong gracefulness at pagiging artistic nila ang issue e, AN AROUSEFUL PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!!!!
This dance has more Asian Influence than the other filipino dances that have more Spanish influence...It's good to see more of these because they never show these at Filipino parties, etc....
Reinterpretation of folkdance is great... but this kinda goes a little bit too far in modifying the original dance for commercial staging purposes. I mean, it's one thing for them to add the ballet influences, but exotifying the dance by adding faux-tribal circle patterns as well as randomly creating a male part of the dance?
sadly, i somehow find myself agreeing. you can see the choreographer's ballet influence, and the showmanship, aesthetics, blocking and all. but interpretation of folkdances has to be substantiated by cultural and historical backing. nonetheless, i love this group. hope to see em live..

Kappa Malong Malong. This is the Leyte Dance Theatre version. Notice that this includes the male portion of the dance.

I think the male part of the dance was supposed to be some interpretation of Silat or some type of Philippine Martial Art. Hard to tell.
I agree about the addition of faux tribal patterns though. They don't add anything to the dance.
