  • There are thousands of songs with riffs that mimic other songs. Ladies and gentlemen, you can only have so many different combinations of chords and progressions before you begin to sound like something already out there. Does this mean plagiarism? HELL NO! If it did, there wouldn't be any more music to make. Even the accusation with Coldplay is absurd... C'mon, let's just leave them alone.

  • Well, it is way too similar to deny it... but, what's the difference? It's the same riff with lyrics int it. I don't think that's a big deal .___.

  • This is a good comparison. This is the first video I've seen with all four songs. I've compared them by watching different videos. Coldplay and Satch have the most similar songs, but there's definitely strong resemblance throughout all of them.

  • great post man

  • It's called diatonic chord substitution... and Coldplay are GUILTY of it.

    - 'nuff said!

  • Since the chord progression of Viva la Vida is actually pretty simple, it shouldn't come as a surprise that there are so many videos on YouTube claiming Coldplay ripped of so-and-so and they should be sued, blah blah.

  • cat stevens is the man!

  • i thing it was just a coincidence and also i believe the zombie invasion will be created by germans to defete the US.

  • what this boils down to is that all the later pop records are plagiarism of Beatles. Yeah.

  • los enanitos verdes!! q grandes! jaja

  • who cares

  • Enanitos Verdes > Coldplay

  • Satriani probably heard it from Stevens but forgot, and came up with a very similar riff but it's not an exact copy.

Coldplay then heard the Satriani song and decided to actually copy, hence the lawsuit and nearly exact similarity between Coldplay's vocal line and Satriani's guitar melody.

Enanitos Verdes is completely unrelated in this, it sounds dissimilar enough to be original.

  • omg CAT STEVENS LOOKS LIKE STEVE KARDYNAL!!!

  • I think the four of them should play together on stage, that would be soooo epic! :D

  • Can't we just agree that Satch's version is the best and stop arguing? :3

  • I think that cakes are delicious

  • You've also forgotten Ocean Color Scene's "Up On The Down Side". Same melody, note for note. Look it up.

  • Coldplay suck ass. I'm glad satch won and gave the money to charity.

  • Dude im still waiting for the Zombie Invasion.

  • ...and what about Alizee's J'en ai merre? they seem so similar

  • joe didnt sue for the melody, he did for the chord progression AND the melody

  • Coldplay (Viva la vida) vs Satriani (If i could fly) vs Enanitos verdes (Frances limon) vs Cat steven (Foreigner Suite) vs Marty balin (Hearts).... IS ONLY MUSIC MAN!!!!

  • @juegofriochile No, its not only music, Its money. Its all about money. YOURE DOING IT WRONG!

  • lol, interesting point about viva la vida, i continously tell the same about Clocks, the piano melody seems to be borrowed from X-tracks - plan 94 (the voyage) but maybe it's just coincidence.

  • Verdes & Stevens songs have totally different chord structure from Satch's.

  • its just four chords that have been used in that arrangement thousands of times by thousands of people over the years. that you could even claim ownership of it is ridiculous.

  • Comment removed

  • idk, its not that complicated a progression.

  • Shall we sue Satriani and Enanitos Verdes for plagiarising Stevens?

It is simply impossible to keep your three tones unique.

  • my thorough, technical, unbiased analysis of the situation is... OH MY GOD! WHY IS JUSTIN BIEBER'S SEVERED HEAD IN MY BED!

  • love the comparison. LETS GIVE PEACE F***ING CHAAAAANCE! !O!

  • That's not a copy, it's just the same chords with a similar melody... And it's not exactly Dream Theater, it's a fairly easy mistake to make, even if you've never heard the other songs.

  • the other guys songs (besides cat stevens) sound like crappy elevator music. Coldplay has no reason to copy a song from third rate musicians.

  • @nmcvicker03 Satriani is not a "third rate" musician.

  • wow that many copies xD

  • who cares? coldplay is better

  • satriani was the original. coldplay changed the key and put lyrics.

  • I don't know what to think, cat stevens is no equal to others, coldplay has the same melody but with another rythm and idea, but enanitos verdes and satriani has same songs

  • of course they look all the same

these songs are very OBVIOUS... anyone can have

if it was a SYMPHONY (Mozart's, Bethoven's or anyone who had an inteligence to compose a less obvious song) none copy it.

    Fact.

    youtube chanel: cathycothy

  • stevens song is very diferent satriani-enanitos verdes and coldplay are similar

satriani and coldplay songs are THE SAME!

  • Creaky boards did it too

  • Base it on theory, try listening to mary's prayer, dan wilson,

  • Liked it, thank you

  • HOLY DRAGONS BALL!!!!!! I don't have wolrds!

  • doesn't have to have been stolen, coldplay did their own twist on it. ^~^

  • Shouldnt Satriani technically sue Verdes and Stevens too then???

  • @TheManiacApproach Verdes and Steven made their first so they should sue him -_-

  • I agree zombies will take over.

  • add in creaky boards and my brain is blown up... .-.

  • This would be stupid if justin bieber copied viva la vida.

  • you've said it all... I agree with you

  • I think that coldplay sucks and cant make any music of their own. Joe Satriani worked hard on thatsong and some wanker band comes and steal it

  • This is stupid. They're similar yes, but not enough. In court, for plagiarism, you have to prove accessibility to the song and SUBSTANTIAL similarities (which is easy to argue, hence the case taking as long as it did) but this is like saying "Well coldplay's is like purple, which is kind of like blue, which is sort of like green, which I guess is pretty close to yellow" Similar but clearly different. Plagiarism is Vanilla Ice's hit song, or Can't Touch this. These are completely different songs

  • Let's not forget about Mireille Mathieu & Patrick Duffy singing Together we're strong 1983 (which, I have to admit, is NOT my personal favorite)

  • Yeah, even my band (who none of these bands could possibly plagiarize, having never heard of us) had a song with a similar chord progression. We recorded it in 2006 or so, and I went back and listened to it again: the guitar solo has that same melody. And I'd never heard Cat Stevens song before then. It's just one of those freak things - it's a really simple melody to come up with.

  • imho coldplay ftw

  • If it's not a plagiarism song, then nothing is a plagiarism song.

    I disappointed to Coldplay.^^

    Fuck you.^^

  • who cares? i mean if its a good song just let it be

  • COLDPLAY?? copy?? satriani?? JÁ!! that guy sucks

well it was a fuckin mistake, i really trust in COLDPLAY's creative power

they just made a GREAT SONG with the same chords that other guys used before, that has happened soooooooo many times... let's not crucifice them it's just a mistake they don't make intentional plagiarisms, i know it :)

  • COCKS AND BALLS!!!! is that vulgar? maybe I'm talking about chickens and tennis balls... how can you tell?

  • @bassboy74 HOLY SH*T! YOU FOUND A LOOPHOLE! :O

  • @Mkvenner8 haha, thank you good sir, I try my best :) nice video by the way!

  • @Mkvenner8

    Loopholes ftw.

  • god!! the different between verdes and satriani is too big

BUT, COLDPLAY SONG IS EXACTLY THE SAME

I knew coldplay before satriani, and i really like them, some of their songs are some of my favorites. But I can't deny the truth

coldplay is a very goog group, but satriani is a master.

Copy? well maybe they just made a song this way because they heard that song before and they didn't remeber!!

It ocurred to me sometimes when i draw... or when i make a design

i don't know what to belive

  • @cerecitah And that therein, is the point of the video :)

  • Comment removed

  • @cerecitah: There is more diferences between Coldplay and Satriani (hear vocals and lead guitar) than between Enanos Verdes and Satriani (both lead guitars play exactly the same progression in every single note, and even the rythm is pretty similar) - Cat Stevens has different rythm to Satriani and Enanos Verdes but he's closer to Coldplay when singing. The only sure fact is all that chord progression is just the same, but if any has right to sue any other is Enanos to Satriani's work.

  • & just when you thught you'd seen it all along comes a lambda 4 feet tall!

  • We all nick parts of songs from time-to-time

  • FUCK

  • This is so ridiculous. The ONLY reason they sound similar is because it's the same chords. Are you gunna sue everyone that uses the same chords as you? No. So get off your high horse and deal with it. They're even completely different instruments. Coldplay didn't copy anyone. Just deal with it and stop trying to take away their thunder.

  • Comment removed

  • whatever, Coldplay is genius. They have a ton of beuatiful songs and are very artistic. LOL ,coldplay does not even sound like that cat stevens guy at all.

  • @paulf1986 you probably already know, but just in case, he did not lose...in the end coldplay had to pay him. Honestly I wouldn't have paid a cent if I really had not STOLEN the song, but hey.....

  • enanitos verdes don't have anything to do with this, it doesn't sound anything like the other 3. Bottom line, coldplay stole not just from one artist, but from two.

And no they do not rock.

  • @guitardrink Coldplay's music is artistic and sophisticated. I swear that ive never heard of joe satriani before until I saw all these videos accusing a Genius band like Coldplay! Viva La Vida!

  • @melovetorun of course you haven't heard of satriani. He is not mainstream(thank god for that)

  • very standard pop chord progression indeed, how you ever gonna sue someone for a 3 or 4 chord riff thats been done endelessly, thats just insanity

  • ok man this is a common riff. im not sticking up for coldplay cause i happen to love satriana, but come on people similar guitar riffs. i can list at least 50 songs with the same c d g progressions

  • it may sounds similar but COLDPLAY has no comparation they put all together and they made the almost perfect song

nobody as coldplay (ecept for the beatles)

  • @carmimartang Agree

  • coldplay's sounds the best anyways.

  • @sumoowns No it doesn't!

  • @R0undAboutMidnight yes it does because all of the other ones sound like bad karaoke. and i'm not a huge coldplay or chris martin fan but he does have a professional sounding voice so that might be why it sounds the best.

  • Another Coldplay plagiarism, check this: watch?v=QJsIV4-dw6k

    An 1983 NES game.

  • I am not fanatic (as I don`t go arround doing stupid fanatic stuff)... but I love Joe`s music since I was a kid and I could tell I started to play guitar because of him. During my life I have heard of many conflicts between musicians due to these kind of deals and different ones... so what? we all have problems, why shouldn`t musicians have the too? I think in one hand we have the fact that "it can happen", because I cannot know for sure who copied who and if there was a / continues...

  • Fuck this band !!!! I don't know why the hell Brian Eno produced them !!!!

  • Coldplay sucks. Coldplay absolutely copied it.

  • Maybe I should just record a song with this melody.. see how the internet explodes in ignorance and unjust pride in one's own opinion.

  • I think the middle two are extremely similar but the last and first don't fit in quite as well. However it is a fairly common chord progression

  • plagiarism my ass , if this is plagiarism then there are another 1 million songs plagiarism .. lots of songs have things that sounds similar.

This is the same but not equal!

  • it is a common chord progression, but also the melody seems so similar in all of these cases that you have presented!

  • Comment removed

  • Cat Stevens the best, and anyway a very low profile melody, every band which paly melodic rock could surfing on something very close to this very very silly FM melody!

  • sadly this is lame :(

  • It's a fucking great melody! Honestly this video has changed my point of view completely! Everybody has the right to use that melody! It's so fucking great!!

  • @JL897139 hey you! he said keep vulgarity to zero, not minimum, ZERO!

! I mean fuck my ass!!

  • @ciaobebbo050 Who are you anyway? Go away troll, go away

  • 60,385,961 views don't lie. Viva La Vida!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • It does sound a little bit but that's music for you!

  • I think that was awesome, and as long as people enjoy it--WHO CARES? 'cause I enjoyed every bit!!

  • Thanks for this video and showing that their are plenty of songs that are similar... Joe is a dick, he is an artist and he should know that; I completely disagree with what he did... if you watch 4 chords in 62 songs or w/e is it, you'll see.

  • i dont care what people say...coldplay made their music better, if anything they should be kissing coldplay's feet.

  • @polkadot91 I agree!

  • i am NOT a coldplay fan, but to their credit (and everyone elses) it is very difficult to think of "new music" eventually every song on the radio will sound like another.

  • I'm just wondering how this one band could have managed to steal from everyone of these artists for a simple 12 note melodic progression.

  • basically coldplay are cheating thieves as well as being the most boring dullest band on the planet.

  • you are wrong because they rock!

  • That's right people, those who fail to prepare ... become zombie snacks!

  • I think if they had just used the same chord progression, you could blow it off, but the same melody too? never new about 2 of 'em, but 1st time i heard Viva, I said, "that's a cat stevens song, but I guess they can use it because he doesn't perform any more".LOL

  • There are 8 notes and a few in betweens.... over 6 billion people, and thousands of years of music, all that is going to result in people stepping on each other's voices..

  • They all copied each other. Bastards!

  • The music in question sounds similar to only a few seconds out of an extended instrumental by Satriani. If Satriani thought it was worth anything, he should have made more use of it. I think Coldplay clearly owns it now.

  • Cat steven should sue satch and enanitos verdes for stealin' most of the instrumental melody and then sue coldplay for stealing the vocal melody

  • Zombies my balls. Fuck your whore mother

  • oh you people just gotta find yourself a life!!! Coldplay did certainly NOT steal from anybody for God´s sake. They´re such a great band with amazing music... Of course it can happen that something is similar sometimes, but oh my God, it´s music, and there is a lot of music in this world, so it really just HAS to happen sometimes... don´t say bad things aboud coldplay. They deserve respect!!!

  • Its called sampling lol

  • As close as a cashmere codpiece but copied nah all good tunes

  • just because they use a similar combination of chords in different keys even, does not make any of them in the wrong for plagiarism ... the riffs aren't even THAT similar.

  • FUCK U DUDE.............

  • Cat Stevens Rules!!!

  • jajajajajajajaj

they are all criminals lol XD They really sound alike... too similar for this to be a coincidence. I think that in the present times there are so many songs that it is very diffcult that some of them don't sound similar. The thing here is that if joe was going to sue ColdPlay he should have checked that he didn't do any plagiarism JA!

  • fuck this cunting bullshit. coldplay didn't steal from no fucking body

  • your a NOOB!!!

  • 1:21 tormeta de facha

  • hahaha holly smoke x'DDDD

  • LOL

  • well they all "stole" cat stevens' song it sounds like. he's a legend.

  • Go back and listen to the original songs by the original artists.

Coldplays' version? "BEAUTIFUL" is my answer! However, you can say it until you are blue in the face that Coldplays' version is "still a way better song than any of those other songs", and you will NEVER get me to agree!

Cat Steven's version IS the original and the best! These guys are still young and have a long way to prove if their music will stand the test of time! Cat Steven's already has!

    Slam, DUNK! :0)

  • i cant even see how the songs sound alike

  • Use your ears, babe. Not your eyes.

  • its kind of hard to see a song in the first place

  • i dont car if coldplay copied it, its still a way better song than any of those other songs

  • They all stole this riff from me! hahaha

  • i think it was just a coincidence..plus it sounds kool in any form.. :)

  • I'm wondering why the riff is common. Honestly since Cat Steven's Love/Heaven is the oldest one, the melody is his.

  • @FuryoftheSound precisely, so Satriani and the Enanitos Verdes should just run and hide. lol

  • Theres even ANOTHER artist that said this riff was stolen. A New York band called "The Creaky Boards" said Coldplay stole the melody of "Viva La Vida" when the lead singer went to a Creaky Boards concert

  • yeah. they frikin checked chris martins records, he was in a recording studio in england during the concert. plus, the creaky boards song came out AFTER the music for viva la vida was written.

  • @FuryoftheSound yeah but that one was obviously fake. chris martin was in london while the concert was in new york and coldplay started recording viva la vida before creaky boards did

  • satriani ftw

  • Not Coldplay's fault, it's their song writers. Unless they wrote the songs.

  • @SpyderT22 coldplay does write their own songs

  • @SpyderT22 Hilarious

  • Rofl! Even music is no match for the inevitable zombie invasion.

  • now compare coldplay's speed of sound to kraftwerks computer love

  • Coldplay is a multinational company , surrounded by tons of composers, schedules, session musicians, etc Most of these bands are constantly handed over songs , The Beatles & the Stones did that too. Basically , someone rushed a song to them to finishing the album , something that pleased the Record Company, something for them just to tweak, like most of these major-exhausted bands. Do you think that a bonehead like Keith Richards in 72 wrote a piano song like Angie?or the beatles`sall ?

  • Obviously none of these are intentional copies. Set aside your opinions about any of these artists, no matter how great a guitarist that guy is, or how money-grubbing those guys are. I think a lot of Satch fans are far too stuck up about their musical taste to look at things clearly. It's a common progression. Get over it.

  • I dont beleive they purposely copied it, but modern music writers obviously heard the other songs before and was stored in their sub concious and unintentially wrote with out even knowing it like family guy writers writing episoded very simular to simpsons, and which comedy writer these days hasnt seen the simpsons?

  • If u ask me there are the most similarities between the third version and coldplays version. U know if u like one of these bands stick with them. Personally i like coldplays more because of the rythym and the lyrics. But if u like Joe then go with him or Enanitos Verdes or if u are a little more biased towards Cat Stevens, then go with them so let my comment be the last on this video the controversy is out. Besides Joe did not put charges on coldplay so enough.

    :P :D o(^.^)o

  • If there are so this many bands/artist claiming ownership of this melody, why aren't they turning against each other? They're only targeting Coldplay. Ohhhh, right. Because it only matters if there's great success involved.

  • actually coldplay has been accused of plagiarism in several other songs aswell, whether it's great success involved or not, anyone'd be suspicious to a "former?" plagiarizer for plagiarism

  • uh yeah..no they havent

  • they all look very similar, so if Coldplay really copied any of them, at least we know they not the first ones who did it.

  • This is a tipical evidence of melody's singularity. Just that, so great songs won't show up due to a closer way of view or is this hysterical sense of modern art ???

  • let the zombies decide. (:
