mars volta are terrible, they have no sense of restraint, or of tension and release. they just go on and on and on, its hardly music as much as yelling look how great we are over and over.
I see absolutely no similarities between this and Radiohead, aside from the fact that they both use musical instruments or something. Good stuff though.

not so much on this song. This was sort of their ultimate epic psych-jam. Listen to Mushroom on the same albulm. It sounds amazingly like Kid A, almost 30 years earlier. Radiohead is still a great band, they just learned a ton from these guys
The Radiohead comparison is absolutely ridiculous. Can was one of the greatest and creative bands ever to have existed. Radiohead on the other hand is one of the most overrated, stale bands ever. not enough freedom anymore, especially in the music industry - what sells gets sold, also music now is a way of controlling the masses ... if there is too much avante garde then the masses may see thru the machine that is the modernety..
Man, the only thing that blows my mind more than the music is Damo's flared jumpsuit. Only a man who is channeling the gods could pull off that outfit.
Sorry, he's singing "searching for my brother", a couple of mates of mine met him and he told them it was apparently about victims of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs. Does sound kinda like "blow-up doll" though :-)
I always thought he was saying "blow-up doll" on the album; I even had friends listen to it and had them try to guess what he was saying...some agreed with me and others just shook their heads in confusion. I had no idea he was saying "brother" until synoneiro posted his comment because it is incredibly difficult to find CAN lyrics online, for this song in particular. I'm not giving Damo a hard time...I adore his vocals but it's not my fault that it is impossible to tell what he is saying.
Oh my god. Wow. It's great to find some more krautrock on youtube. Can might be my favourite of the lot. They really were an absolute beast of a band. Thanks. :-)
I think one of the greatest lessons these artists teach us is to be spontaneous and follow our instincts. Damo is still improvising, and people dont do that anymore. We are in ruts obeying rules and we cannot create that way- how can our children create in desks? Society wants obedience not creativity
What are you on about you utter goit? Your implication that "people don't" improvise music anymore is total wank (in fact, freely-improvised music's probably more popular today than it's ever been). Secondly, I don't think Can were teaching lessons to anyone - they were merely enjoying themselves - and thus if they were teaching, they'd be lessons of freedom and enjoyment. Additionally, I think blindly following your instincts is a bad idea - look what happened to Charles Manson when he did.
Indeed, If you look for the early years and damo suzuki on this youtube thingy you would see them improvising, Britney spears doesen't improvise cos she can't, I can't play the same tune twice cos I don't want to.
Hi, Here we see can representing the we play music because we can and because we want to and if we make money then that's a pleasant side effect type band and I use Britney to represent the I want to be popular and sell my sexy pictures to teenage boys type act.
my only wish, and I am nit-picking here, is that they hadn't done so many overdubs on this concert footage. The DVD is riddled with sections of sound that don't match the video whatsoever.
It is only my love for can that criticizes this documentation of this epic live performance. I wish there was an unedited version of this show for us to enjoy.
What a treasure. History being made right there baby.!

Thanks. :-)

Jaki played so well. Anyone could improvise over his perfect beats.

My art teacher used to let me play a can record during class in high school when I was a kid. It was soon over babaluma. can rules
dejahthoris 4 years ago
I think one of the greatest lessons these artists teach us is to be spontaneous and follow our instincts. Damo is still improvising, and people dont do that anymore. We are in ruts obeying rules and we cannot create that way- how can our children create in desks? Society wants obedience not creativity
dejahthoris 4 years ago
What are you on about you utter goit? Your implication that "people don't" improvise music anymore is total wank (in fact, freely-improvised music's probably more popular today than it's ever been). Secondly, I don't think Can were teaching lessons to anyone - they were merely enjoying themselves - and thus if they were teaching, they'd be lessons of freedom and enjoyment. Additionally, I think blindly following your instincts is a bad idea - look what happened to Charles Manson when he did.
tristanbath 4 years ago
Indeed, If you look for the early years and damo suzuki on this youtube thingy you would see them improvising, Britney spears doesen't improvise cos she can't, I can't play the same tune twice cos I don't want to.
bmmaaate 4 years ago
Please explain! How do you arrive at a Can and Britney spears comparison??
Windy72 4 years ago
Hi, Here we see can representing the we play music because we can and because we want to and if we make money then that's a pleasant side effect type band and I use Britney to represent the I want to be popular and sell my sexy pictures to teenage boys type act.

one of the greatest bands of all time and one of their best songs.
mutepg58 4 years ago
my only wish, and I am nit-picking here, is that they hadn't done so many overdubs on this concert footage. The DVD is riddled with sections of sound that don't match the video whatsoever.
It is only my love for can that criticizes this documentation of this epic live performance. I wish there was an unedited version of this show for us to enjoy.
