  • What a treasure. History being made right there baby.!

  • Damo Suzuki is cool!!!!!!!

  • @NWG92 I hope you're joking... hahaha

  • Man! Damo man!

  • Can sind die ultimative Deutschrock-Gruppe. Habe sie leider 40Jahre zu spät entdeckt. Sie sind trotz allem die A V A N T G A R D E in diesem Lande!

  • RADIOHEAD SUCKS

  • @tresurezone Tell me why, please, I don't understand.

  • if you don't think Jaki is one of the best drummers ever, you can pretty much go to hell

I know stuff like this make you sound like a complete dick but this time it's justified

    IT'S CAN FOR GOD'S SAKE

  • wow didn't know can fans were such radiohead haters. jesus, it's possible to enjoy two things at once you know - - -

  • Once you listen you are addicted , if you don´t , you´re not listening.

  • RAD.

  • Jaki Liebezeit is bigger than God

  • Damo looks stoned as fuck!

  • @imacomputer101 jk...

  • Brought a new copy of "Tago Mago" off i-tunes, hadn't listened to it in over 15 years..now, i.can't stop playing it...absolute genius..one of the greatest, most ahead of it's time, innovative rock records ever made.Johnny Marr, Josh Homme are just a couple of the great modern guitarists who rate this band as one of their greatest influences..I can hear why..breathtaking

  • Can was one of the first german bands which status became Krautrock, but for insiders it is even more than this. Can brought things to life in music business and their coolness in playing so reckless is anachieved until today! For all the lovers of old german pioneers I'd like to say: 'yes you CAN'

  • is this concert available in full anywhere?

  • they are GENIUS

  • Even though the Stylus magazine's top 50 drummer list was basically preposterous, Jaki Liebezeit's inclusion (#3) was right on the money.

  • Searching for my brother!!!

  • I love whoever posts these old Can videos. You make my day!!!

  • listen to Michael Tsarion on the youtube. He is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. Leo Zagami and Dr. Bill Deagle are highly informative as well.

  • I thought Spoon was the only available footage from Cologne. Amazing...

  • Amazing! I almost came!

  • i listen to this song at least once a day

  • ditto

  • u have any more live ffotage of them?

  • Can informed my musical sensibility from 1969 onwards...they made so much of the Brit alternative scene in the 70's seem staid and formulaic in comparison. (true for Krautrock in general) True pioneers. R.I.P Michael Karoli.

  • Is it like a boy band, where everybody gets to pick their favourite member? I like Holger, he's dreamy!

  • All the members of CAN had such an intense chemistry with each other. So fuckin awesome

  • My fellows from the Beatgeneration!

  • it's a shame that a band as brilliant as Can attract such muso dickheads like some of the pricks commenting below .

  • look whos talkin

  • well shoober i obviously wasn't including you in my comment about smart arse muso types cos you're clearly as dumb as a brick with barely the brains you were born with .

  • forget zappa, the mars volta, steve (bon jovai) vai, & joe satriani. CAN rules

  • forget the charts...XXP

  • Damo Suzuki evinces what Yoko Ono could only affect.

  • Comment removed

  • this is the nicest disagreement i've ever seen on youtube. weird.

  • i have nothing but respect for their technical ability and as hired musicians i.e. vai for zappa, they are useful people to have around. They're albums happen to suck balls though, if they hadn't made them they wouldn't be bullshit, but they did & so they are. Sorry :)

  • i agree as far as the creativity but to worry about your music being complex it what breeds the bullshit world of Satriani and Vai. No beef to the volta though, but i do think at the drive in may have been better

  • NICK McCABE of THE VERVE...will PLAY a special set with DAMO SUZUKI of CAN on THURSDAY, the 2nd of APRIL in MANCHESTER!!!

Don't miss NICK McCABE at MARQUEE CLUB @ NIGHT & DAY CAFE with Damo Suzuki of legendary CAN featuring Mark Heaney on Drums and Jeff Wootton on Bass !!!

Tickets info on The Black Marquee my space

    Spread the word !!!

    x

  • Ok i get it.Happy Mondays took from this song for their "Hallelujah".

  • the crazy sounds at the end wuld freak me out if i was trippin.

  • they make your head & body feel it real strong!!!!

  • most prog bands were a little wierd, but CAN were off the range man!!!

  • That little kid at the end is thom yorke

  • really?

  • Mars Volta suck. To be the worst band on this planet, they would have to improve. Can is vastly superior and it is an insult them to compare the two.

  • Damo worked with Cedric and Omar on one of Omar's solo cd. So if there good enough for a member of Can they cant be that bad. Both bands are great.

  • mars volta are ok. but at the drive in is when they kicked ass.

  • Great - they were truly unique.

    Look at Damo's outfit, xD

  • can with damo was more jamming.

  • In my opinion, it takes greater talent to improvise much of your act on the spot than it does to spend all of your time rehearsing your set constantly in order to make it perfect...Can was obviously one of those bands that never over-analyzed anything about themselves. They simply drew out a melody and let thier musical inhibitions dictate the rest.

There aren't many artists who know how to do that nowadays.

The ones that do become too overwhelmed with thier sense of creativity.

    *cough TMV*

  • I don't see anything wrong with the mars volta

  • Yeah like Cream

  • OMFG i was thinking the exact same thing about volta, man u read my mind, but i think it'll be a long long time b4 we get another band that takes the musical aspect of jamming better then CAN

HALLELUWAH!<--next to paperhouse best song on tago mago, to be honest tago mago is just one giant trip and then come down is hardly a come down at the end. my all time favorite can album!

  • I completely know what you mean Robert, I guess it's just the difference between the times that made THESE bands and the times that have bands now. Mars Volta are very far out, but I see what you mean about groups like them being creative for the sake of creative. Today it's either that bands have no idea how to do that at all (*cough FOB*) or it's "Oh look how creative and out there WE'RE being!"

  • Yeah! Say it out loud!

  • Who is this radiohead person everybody is arguing about? I came here to see CAN!

  • Question came up regarding lyrics. I get

    "Searching for my black cloud

     Inside out"

    Damo for the silver lining

  • makes me wanna drop LSD all over again :|)

  • Radiohead has been the best band of the last decade, but CAN is the best ever, at least for breadth of innovation, musical daring, and their irrepressible creative genius.

Can and Radiohead do have a lot in common. Radiohead does a great cover of "The Thief" from the early days, 1968. It still sounds fresh today.

One sure indicator of Can's genius is the fact that songs from 1972 (like this) sound like they could be from 2009. Special delivery from the time machine.

  • radiohead has been the bast band of the last decade? please

  • Hell yeah. Got a better suggestion?

Of course, it depends on what you're looking for in music. RH is not a dance band. That's a legitimate knock. Can rocked out better than RH, and Can are no dance band either.

But if you consider creative originality one of the primary criteria of musical greatness, then RH has bin the biz for at least a decade.

  • bardo pond and labradford and royal trux and dirty three and slint

radiohead are (were) simply not that creative, they are an above-average pop band (not even the most creative pop band of the '90s)

    ciao!

  • Sorry lexo, I don't know any of the bands you reference,so I guess I'll have to qualify my comment to say that RH are the best band that I've heard over the last decade. %^)

Keep in mind however, that RH is "pop" music only by virtue of the unique quality of their pioneering sound. When RH came out in the 90's there wasn't any commercial music that sounded like them. Who would ever have thought Kid A would be a commercial success? RH opened people's minds and expanded musical space.

  • Mars Volta maybe...

  • mars volta are terrible, they have no sense of restraint, or of tension and release. they just go on and on and on, its hardly music as much as yelling look how great we are over and over.

  • Wow, a total freakout by Damo Suzuki!

  • Great songs. I would like to know where i can find more vids of can on the internet, does somebody can (sic) help me? Thanks

  • why is everyone talking about radiohead, isnt this about can?

  • ahhhhhh.....

  • Radiohead isn't known for synchronized drumming, which defines much of the lasting influence of Can.

  • I see absolutely no similarities between this and Radiohead, aside from the fact that they both use musical instruments or something. Good stuff though.

  • Influence goes beyond a sound or look... technics in playing and in the studio are more important.

  • radiohead suck, these guys dont

  • I disagree, but to each his own.

  • no, that's the truth

  • don't be an idiot, conifer. Radiohead is one of the only bands now a days with any new ideas. OK Computer, Kid A, In Rainbows, HTTT all brilliant albums.

  • no, there's plenty of bands out there nowadays doing incredible things. Radiohead isn't one of them

  • Evidence supports otherwise. To say radiohead isn't doing incredible things is to be completely and blatantly ignorant of the band your referring to. 1.Go listen to radiohead 2.Form an educated opinion not a pretentious pre-formulated one 3.???? 4.profit.

  • nice bit of South Park humor, that was a great episode.

I'm familiar with ALL of Radiohead's work.

They're the epitomy of pretentious, vanity-driven fuckbaggery

  • with all due respect this is coming from the guy that responded "no, that's the truth" to pv6's comment. You really aren't in a position to criticize a band for being pretentious.

  • Radiohead is brilliant, ill give you that, but there is certianly other good music being made out there.

  • this is like 30 years old

  • not so much on this song. This was sort of their ultimate epic psych-jam. Listen to Mushroom on the same albulm. It sounds amazingly like Kid A, almost 30 years earlier. Radiohead is still a great band, they just learned a ton from these guys

  • Why isn't this ever shown along with images of Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Jimmy Page's violin bow antics? It's just too awesome.

  • Are you hight? My friends and I used to do this in the 4th grade. just a brief phase, thankfully, been there done that, for no good reason.

  • The Radiohead comparison is absolutely ridiculous. Can was one of the greatest and creative bands ever to have existed. Radiohead on the other hand is one of the most overrated, stale bands ever. If there had been one tiny shred of Can´s genious in their music I would have at least liked Radiohead just a little bit. Well I don´t. They´re pretentious twats.

  • Can influences everyone. Even pretentious twats.

  • I know who you mean

  • never mind the radiohead comparison -- happy mondays ripped this off big time

  • Yo, Radiohead claimed to be influenced by CAN, and, in fact, covered CAN's song "Thief" off the album Delay (1968) at the Kid A tour on September 8, 2000. Not to mention the obvious fact that CAN (formed 1968) came before Radiohead (formed 1991).

Look this stuff up before jumping to conclusions...

  • None of those points are valid in the slightest. Altough I really don't see how people think Radiohead copied Can at all.

  • They might enjoy listening to Can (like most people who like far out music), but they have nothing in common with them musically. Can is totally organic, it's all about the musicians playing off each other. Radiohead's music isn't about that at all.

  • can-the band radiohead want to be

  • can seems to me more oriented towards long progressive pieces whereas radiohead is mostly song and lyrics oriented.

  • OMG, this music is unbelievable, how the hell they are not revered more?, 1972?, music like this?, I just can't believe it

  • Soft Machine and other jazz-rock bands were playing stuff not too different from this at the time, albeit with a lot less intensity and without the weirdy-beardy electronics.

  • Weirdy-beardy electronics... GONG!

  • What does the kid give Damo at the end? A comb??

  • I could watch this clip all day long--the heat generated by this almost melts the film. I agree, the best Krautrock like this is the best music there is.

  • Watch WES MILES VIRUS videos!

  • I always thought it was "searching for my problem" but "brother" makes just as much sense.

  • I always thought it was "searching for my bronco".

  • No, you can see Damo mouthing the word "bronco" if you look closely. It's definitely "searching for my bronco".

  • that's ridiculous, how could you look at the mouth movements of a japanese guy and tell if he's saying "bronco" or not

    you're full of it

  • I guess I'm out of it it but too much for me.

  • Happened to a lot of people... Too much for them. As Holger told me, that was to be expected, it droned on and on and many couldn't take it. God, I loved CAN in high school. All other rock went out the window when I discovered the Germans.

  • sometimes i think no band could ever be this awesome again

  • not enough freedom anymore, especially in the music industry - what sells gets sold, also music now is a way of controlling the masses ... if there is too much avante garde then the masses may see thru the machine that is the modernety..

  • Ain't got not time for western lessons. I AM Damo Suzuki! I AM Damo Suzuki!!

  • This live stuff shakes the Earth. Anyone know if the whole show (and others) is available somewhere?

  • amazon

  • The dvd with this footage is availabe on netflix.

Man, the only thing that blows my mind more than the music is Damo's flared jumpsuit. Only a man who is channeling the gods could pull off that outfit.

  • Sorry, he's singing "searching for my brother", a couple of mates of mine met him and he told them it was apparently about victims of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs. Does sound kinda like "blow-up doll" though :-)

  • yes he is!!! Suzuki is a dirty boy, but what an amazing song.

  • is he saying: "searching for my blow-up doll"???

  • Give the guy a break! English isn't his first language! I bet your attempts at singing in Japanese would sound similiarly garbled, too!

  • I always thought he was saying "blow-up doll" on the album; I even had friends listen to it and had them try to guess what he was saying...some agreed with me and others just shook their heads in confusion. I had no idea he was saying "brother" until synoneiro posted his comment because it is incredibly difficult to find CAN lyrics online, for this song in particular. I'm not giving Damo a hard time...I adore his vocals but it's not my fault that it is impossible to tell what he is saying.

  • what an amazing band! i love it! we have all their cd's and just purchased their vinyls! you don't hear good music like that very often~

  • buenisimo

  • Kenji is the man! Holger is the man!!

    can is the Man!!

  • Simply the best!

  • I love Damo Suzuki and am gonna convince him to come play music with me and then i am gonna have his babies

  • God bless you! Damo's a living legend!

  • this is kraut!

  • Oh my god. Wow. It's great to find some more krautrock on youtube. Can might be my favourite of the lot. They really were an absolute beast of a band. Thanks. :-)

  • my favorite group, i have all their records but i have to sell them soon because i lost my job

  • sin duda Can es el mejor grupo de Krautrock

  • Wow... great jam. Probably the best of all the Krautrock groups.

  • damo still plays toronto 'bout 1ce a year'n stiil's amazing.

(some of the other boys're still working 2)

  • amazing.

  • DAMO! DAMO! DAMO!

he played a FREE show in New Haven Connecticut last night ... if you were there ... it was a special nite. Thank you DAMO!

    - bob d.

  • FUCK! I wish I could've been there.

  • I love this Band <3

    Damo !

  • OH YEAH!!!!

  • to MilkCandyFarm,

    that`s right, let´s invent a time reactor...

  • Mother Fucker Band. This is art.

  • You lucky bastards, i wish i was born in the 70s. Too much shite comes out these days.

    What happend to music?

  • This is f***ing fantastic!! My only regret is being too young to have seen them live.

  • One More Night - anyone have a clip, please? ;-)

  • I saw them only once in the early 70s, this brings back some great memories.

  • let us just listen my friends

  • RIP Michael.

  • Is this from the DVD on the Box Set?

  • Oops looks like my question was answered in the first post.

  • kraut rock power forever - and power to the prostitutions yours faithfully arno

  • Jaki played so well. Anyone could improvise over his perfect beats.

  • My art teacher used to let me play a can record during class in high school when I was a kid. It was soon over babaluma. can rules

  • I think one of the greatest lessons these artists teach us is to be spontaneous and follow our instincts. Damo is still improvising, and people dont do that anymore. We are in ruts obeying rules and we cannot create that way- how can our children create in desks? Society wants obedience not creativity

  • What are you on about you utter goit? Your implication that "people don't" improvise music anymore is total wank (in fact, freely-improvised music's probably more popular today than it's ever been). Secondly, I don't think Can were teaching lessons to anyone - they were merely enjoying themselves - and thus if they were teaching, they'd be lessons of freedom and enjoyment. Additionally, I think blindly following your instincts is a bad idea - look what happened to Charles Manson when he did.

  • Indeed, If you look for the early years and damo suzuki on this youtube thingy you would see them improvising, Britney spears doesen't improvise cos she can't, I can't play the same tune twice cos I don't want to.

  • Please explain! How do you arrive at a Can and Britney spears comparison??

  • Hi, Here we see can representing the we play music because we can and because we want to and if we make money then that's a pleasant side effect type band and I use Britney to represent the I want to be popular and sell my sexy pictures to teenage boys type act.

  • Every time I reply to a comment on this site it puts my comment at the top out of context at the top of the page.

  • one of the greatest bands of all time and one of their best songs.

  • my only wish, and I am nit-picking here, is that they hadn't done so many overdubs on this concert footage. The DVD is riddled with sections of sound that don't match the video whatsoever.

It is only my love for can that criticizes this documentation of this epic live performance. I wish there was an unedited version of this show for us to enjoy.

  • Agreed mastodon 72. Agreed.

  • can is pretty awesome, i mean you talk about freaking genius music and thats can

  • The drum on the studio version of this song is the best i ever heard (even better than "Funky drummer" of James Brown.Viva Can!

  • Paperhouse-Mushroom-Oh yeah!

The most significant rock music ever written.

  • yay can!

  • Great band and alot of people have never heard of them it's a shame.

  • Yes! My favourite can song, wish it was the whole thing.

  • This is more violent and loud than gabba!?!

    I liked it!
