its also known as 1st degree and 2nd degree murder. An example of manslaughter would be driving over a man and killing him when drunk. Or having a fight and killing someone with a punch. 1st degree is intent to kill. Stabbing, shooting for example. Self defense often carries 2 degree/manslaughter. I guess in this case the guy that was murdered volunteered, therefore has been deemed as manslaughter.
