I have absolutely loved this performance by Joe and bassist Kjell Benner ever since I first heard it about fifteen years ago. Has it ever been released as an mp3 or one any of Joe's CDs? I'd love to buy a copy of it, but so far, the only place I have ever seen it is on this instruction tape. Wonderful performance, and one of the best imitations of a steel guitar on std. 6-string I have ever heard. What Joe is doing is very tough, but he is making it sound easy.
@greekflatpicker: Joe is using nothing more than some delay, reverb and compression; the rest of it is him and the guitar. He's rolled off some of the treble and is playing a lot on the front pickup, too. He changes pickups to change his tone, also varies his attack.
this legend is my guitar teacher now. but now hes actually fully bald :) hes sooooo friken good its scary. He can literally pick up like any instrument and be amazing at it.
Joe's playing on this (and his country jazz instruction tape) bridges all the gaps between jazz, western swing and blues. This is the magic rope trick.

Reminds me of Roy Lanham- one of the greats but not very visible on YouTube- a great shame.

Good God y'all! Those steel guitar chords starting @ 1:34 blew me away! So smooth - not a hint of it being played on a 6 string. Amazing!
