  • I dont care what people may say about SINGLISH.

Singapore is best, many races lives in harmony.

NOTE : don't forget to use "lah" that our trademark.

    Singapore is OK lah ........

  • I applaud Singapore's Singlish. It appears everything is a shortcut version of the longer version. Now, why would one who wish to go to City Hall MRT station, takes the train from Ang Mo Kio MRT station to Wooldland, to Queenstown, etc and finally dropping off at City Hall MRT station when it's faster, used less energy and cost effective by going the opposite direction, that is from AMK MRT station to Novena, Orchard, etc and City Hall. Likewise when comes to speaking English, Singlish is No. 1!

  • @childhoodspeech English is only used for business transactions and the majority still speak Chinese. They can sure write properly, but it does not reflect the oral communication part.

Don't even tell me about your unemployment rate. Singapore is a tiny country and it is easy to control population growth to match the number of jobs available. You don't outsource to China too.

  • I don't think Singapore places high standards on grammatical structures and English word pronunciation.

  • @MrBrutus101 Sorry I believe I clicked on the wrong button. As I was saying, it is not true about what you say. Schools are very strict about English as a subject. English is the primary language of administration for the country. But it has never been the mother tongue of the ethnic people. Understandably, when people go home, there is less need to use language to communicate with the family.

  • 1 sentence can use 10 words u dunwan. want go use another 100. smart siol

  • Singlish is trash because Singapore people are Low IQ animals

  • @SingaporeTrash True that. Dingapores always down on Malaysians and Filipinos. We just let them because we have better things to do.

  • Personally, I think Singlish is awesome. It's not "funny" or something to be "sad" about. I'd say I'd be proud to have a key accent/way of speaking within a country. xD

While on the other hand, I hate Filipino Accents and I'm Filipino. >.>

  • @kmde666 But Filipinos can construct better grammar in their language. Dingaporeans pretty much destroyed English.

  • @kmde666 I'm Filpino-Chinese, but I don't have Filipino accent. You're being stereotypical towards your own race.

Everyone has accent and in fact, I'd rather have an accent because it shows a strong character.

  • @kmde666 My Filipino friends speak very good English. Accent is not something we can change overnight, or even overtime, unless we have formal retraining and constant exposure to a language.

  • Actually the disadvantages of speaking in Singlish is that sometimes the people whom you speak with, will think that you are rude to them. The advantage of speaking Singlish, will save your energy and time. In conclusion, I will speak in Singlish and proper English to actually "fit in" the appearance of the people outside Singapore (Westerners) or in Singapore (Locals).

  • @MasterSean217 it's not easy to "switch". I had bad experience myself when I worked in N.Y. I think we should learn proper english and it's better for our image. But, i do agree that singlish is fun and fit in......

  • singlish make english so easy ..

  • @JamuZ1234 English in its original form is easy. If you can't learn it, you're just linguistically challenged. It's normal, so don't go haywire.

  • it's funny I like it!!!

  • i'd like to regard Singlish as a dialect of English not only because of the special accent but also the distinctive speaking logic.

  • @Naralee71 True. English is meant for low-context individuals who prefer concision and directness. I'm glad you understand the logic structure of an argument written or verbalized in English.

  • Thank you for your comments. Language has always been the talking point whenever people visit this country. The language used daily by the locals is not always English.

  • Why are people trying to change Singlish? As long as an individual knows how and where to compare and speak english or singlish, its fine. And if you guys haven't noticed, Singlish is somehow like a simplified version of English. So, you actually SAVE your energy by talking singlish.

  • haaahaaaaa very funny for singlish ;-d

  • today got discount you come tomorrow no more discount

    lol that is so funny!

  • I still like Singlish version - afterall, it is their culture. Why try to formalize it?

  • @lexxypexxy Don't formalize it. It's like formalizing Ghetto English.

  • you're singaporean? your english sounds like " required/learned english" . if you're not, what is your mother tongue? you singlish is very powderful

  • this is like more to a chinese slang

  • Singlish sounds like Thai English...

  • @0hN0y0ud1dnt - NO way. Thai sounds girlie, leaning towards "gayish"!

  • Singaporeans are killing the english lanfuage.

  • @punday1963

unfortuanately, u r right about it. Most singapore don't think that it's necessary to improve or change but the world is getting "smaller" and we are closer to each other now. I do mind how outsiders look at us becasue i do think most educated singaproean could write good, in fact better english than others (for instance, compare to college students in america). Singlish is fun, provided we could "switch" to proper english when necessary. but, can we ???

  • I got three words for Singlish speakers...

    KAN NA SAI...

  • funny accent.

  • I love the Singlish. I like the second option better.

  • Your english is a little weird.

The main problem lies with your intonation. It is very weird, it does not sound like a native speaker.

You have also mispronounced a few words such as "visitors". You pronounced it as "vistors"

Standard Singapore English or Standard English for that matter, does not sound like this. You don't have to speak in RP or General American, a Singapore accent is perfect but intonate your words properly.

  • very very informative..... lah heheeeh

  • the Singlish sounds like sing a song. different countries speak english in different way. it is hard to image how British think when other countries speak their language is in other ways in the world.

  • hahaha singlish is suck!!

  • already...... always already.... singlish suck!

  • Your Singlish so perfect already. Can teach ar? I oso want learn!

  • I don't believe this; you need an English translator to translate Singlish to English. Better learn proper English lah in school, what happen to teachers, why don't teach well, he he.

  • I LOVE SINGLISH TOO!

  • LIke many other versions of English mixed with foreign langauges (e,g Spanglish), Singlish has helped pp from different racial and language backgrounds (Hokkien, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tamil or Malay) living in the same country to manage communication. To them, Singlish is conversational. Furthermore, many traders had arrived in Singapore from India, China, Indonesia and most of them did not know any English. Perhaps the bosses did, but certainly not the workers.

  • @childhoodspeech corrections its the for the chinese who choose not to pronounce english words properly...the indians speak english with a different accent, they dont need singlish to communicate...malays speak malay...

  • it's not conversational..

  • Singlish is really cute:) I would like to advice those who love to deride Singlish to learn Chinese first.

  • I don't see anything wrong with the Singlish accent. It is the use of English grammar and vocabulary that is of our concern. Singlish is not about accent, it is about the way we use grammar and vocabulary to mix with the native language that produces the unique Singlish language. We have learned to overcome learning this language without ever travelling overseas to find out how it actually works. If this has been the case, we would never have understood how English works.

  • I LOVE SINGLISH! I have never been there and will likely never will but the language makes me wish I was born there.
