This was the tour that introduced me to Tull being so much more than just "Aqualung." I had a girlfriend at the time that insisted on taking me. I don't know whatever became of her, but at least she had good taste.
I saw Ian Anderson in Milwaukee in autumn 2009 but he played nothing from Broadsword. I was disappointed, because I think "Fallen on Hard Times" would be well recieved by the U.S. audience, especially in 2009. But oh well, that's what you get for going to a 15 or so song concert with a libraby of [insert big number here] to choose from. He was great, btw.
I couldn;t agree more with jwhardin740 every lineup this band has ever had has been as good as the previous one. I'm only 30 and i saw them back in 96 or 97 and it was hands down the best concert i've ever seen. The electricity went out in the amphitheatre they were playing in because there was a huge thunderstorm going on and when the back generators come on they came out and did an acoustic set , absolutely amazing!!
@GreenGhostGalahad Totally agree with you. I'm 35 and caught them live in '95 and '99 when they came to Scotland, both great gigs. Yeah really professional band whatever the lineup, always give good entertainment/value for money.
@DCHurlford1 i saw them live as a teenager in 82 at CAMBRAI in FRANCE and i was surprised to see IAN shout very angrily at so-called fans who were saying to him "we're falling asleep,"something you should'nt try at home with a proud Scot! apart from that incident, agreat souvenir with flashes of jerry CONWAY's unique brilliance on the drums still very clear to me after,say,28 years!(sob)
Saw this show at the L.A. Sports Arena on my birthday in 1982 from the 3rd row (a gift)... it reaffirmed my faith in Tull shows and music (I had been dissapointed in the Stormwatch & A shows)... The versions of My God and Broadsword brought me to tears.... thanks BR!
@jaythehistorian1 This sounds better than the album? Are you on drugs? No band sounds as good live as their album - how possibly can they? Tull is highly complex music and with even the best intentions they can't even get near to the perfection they engineer onto vinyl/disc.
@NarcissistsDie : Jethro Tull whom I've seen numerous times always sound as good live as in the studio. It is because Tull members are incredibly good musicians. On a TV show the host commented , Tull did "CD quality" renditions during their first rehearsal. Tull's website sometimes has a recording of a live performance done on a radio show which is flawless. The live version of the Clasp was better IMO because it was much more upbeat and played w/ more energy. Are you on drugs?
I would have loved to have seen this tour. My first tull concert was the Aqualung tour, my last was the Heavy Horses tour. I guess I missed a few good shows.
I saw the Oakland '82 show too. Does anyone remember the name of the instrumental tune they played on this Broadsword tour? It was similar to "Conundrum" (Bursting Out alb), but very progressive. Would like to hear that tune again.
Get out!!! I was at that show too!! Oakland Colliseum 1982....Don't know the song name, but do you remember the set list? I remember they opened with "Something's on the Move" from Stormwatch--
Wish I'd seen it, I'd grown up w/ J.T. and would have loved to be there. Well at least thank goodness for You Tube, and video, or film, back then. I was working full time and more so I didn't see too many concerts, but love this song, and J.T!
I was there too in Oakland! As I recall they did a short version of Broadsword, just the first verse, chorus and bridge. Great show, I remember it like yesterday--which is kinda scary, really.
That was my first concert and my brother was pissed because the tickets were $9
You're the first person I've ever come across that's mentioned that tour. it was awsome, there was a big cargo net flowing off the drums and there was multiple costume changes. That tour should have been recorded. it was some show!
Saw this tour in 82. I think it was at the Long Island. The stage was a large ship which Anderson bounded from one end to another. It was fantastic. I think the mix was better at the show I was at. This album was one of the Great Tull collections. Thanks for posting this moment in time!
Yep, I was there , too. It was September 18th at Nassau Coliseum. Great show, and they opened with "Something's On The Move". Saga was the opening band. What a great double bill. That was my first real concert!
Vetesse's cheesy keyboards really cheapen Broadsword though. Ian's voice here sounds great, before the cigarettes really did their damage. Thanks for the post!
Thanks for finding "The Clasp". Never thought I would see or hear it live. Get Erik Norlander's "Hommage Symphonique" album for a terrific version of "The Clasp".
I echo the other comments - thanks for posting a rare live performance of one of my favorites. I've got to say, though, this performance really drives home how synthesizer dominated this album was; this live performance is almost indistinguishable from the album version.
I have been a long-time fan of Jethro Tull, along with my father...i was looking for "Broadsword" but never expected to find "The Clasp" as well...off of the same album, BOTH hard to find...WELL DONE!!!

one of my favourite albums, shame there seems to be no live performances of "slow marching band"

When they toured the US on the Broasword tour, they had an elaborate stage setup with a wooden ship. Does anyone have footage of that?
BARRIEMOREBARLOW 1 year ago
A qualidade da filmagem do show de woodstock está melhor que isso feito em 1982 !!!Por isso que Ian Anderson detesta essas imagens de porcaria......

Broadsword and the Beast is to me, Tull's darkest, stormiest and most severe masterpiece.

Jethro Tull has to be one of the most under rated and under appreciated bands ever.
Great band.

@jwhardin740 Tull is one of the few bands who consistently sound better in live versions of their songs than the studio versions.
