It's a pity this report doesn't go deeper into the ideological hypocricies that plague the political structure of the UN generally. It goes a long way in explaining a lot of things that go wrong with peacekeeping missions.

What do you propose instead of UN peacekeepers were to go ahead? I'm afraid the women of rural Congo would face an increased to rape and having their familes torn apart. Also, labeling the peacekeers as Europeans is inaccurate as the programme shows missions from India, Pakistan and Guatemala, quite international and not just European.

Myanmar (Burma) gang of criminal military personals have also rape thousand of women and killed. I think Burma has far more greater refugees or IDP than that of Congo. I feel very bad for those who are suffering continuosly for no reasons of their own.

It's time for the UN to stop exausting energy on the Palestinian issue which compared to the very real genocide in the Congo, is really just a tempest in a teapot. Peacekeepers can only keep peace with a mandate and a treaty. I weep for the Congolese, fearing this genocide will worsen as the world finacial crisis deepens. The entire Arab world fought reconciliation w/Israel making refugees of their brothers. This is much worse. More die in Congo monthly than have died in Palestine in 10 years.

You are very correct..this is a real issue, not contrived in the typical propagandist sense..there are no illusions here, poverty suffering and as the commentator states the victims of bureaucracy amid the lack of aid workers and resources much less solutions presented for long term survival..this is real war..real evil and should be attended to by those that love liberty and promote peace.

The UN needs to change its rule of engagement.But this reporter is too biased against UN troops, especially African troops. The regional unit ECOMOG, Nigeria Ghana Senegal, were successful in bringing peace to Liberia and Sierre Leone when the so called West abandoned these countries to their fate. ECOMOG succeeded with its meagre resource, and won. If they want an expeditionary EU force, then let the Europeans just shut up and send one rather than blame the UN.

There is a point in the peace process when It becomes necessary to use overwhelming and decisive force to end hostilities..full authority to set up a peaceful and cooperative government of self rule and representation..peacekeepers that have a clear understanding of peace and the same degree of understanding of war so that they will win when those that love something other than liberty are confronted!

The mandate must be changed to allow a role productive role for the UN peacekeppers, if there is no will to change then there is no reason to be there.

nick, the west does have a wealth of solutions..we have overcome many of these same problems that are flourishing in Africa..why shouldn't we share our ideas, ideals and technologies? Planting,teaching how to Irrigate,helping cultivate and establishing self rule as advisers and real peacekeepers behind the soldiers efforts is the only human thing to do.
