I was doing forest activism at this time in Headwater Ca. The last unprotected Ancient Redwood forest. Then I joined the Caravan for Justice, we stoped in Lawrence, & my friend with me knew Burroughs, the rest of the people wanted to keep going, I should have jumped off. oh well. Ferlinghetti is in his 90's. Peter Orlovsky just recently died.
Man, I wish Patti Smith's song wasn't playing while they show footage of William & co. talking. Got nothing against Patti but Burroughs is more interesting.
He was lucky, quite a few people didn't make it to their 40s. The likely outcome of living his life is brain damage/death/prison/all three. Some people are charmed.
@retread01 Actually, being addicted to heroin will not cause brain damage. At all.
Heroin, like all opiates, is not neurotoxic. In fact, it really isn't toxic to any organ. I'm not saying opiate addiction is safe, just that the health risks do not come from prolonged exposure to the drugs themselves.
Overdoses even, are fairly rare unless alcohol or other CNS depressants are involved. People who have clean, stable supplies of opiates often live long, healthy lives with their addictions.
I wasn't aware that he actually moved back to Kansas, in the end. I've read it, but never knew with Burroughs. A dream, a hallucination, a thought. Interesting.
Man O Man O Man... Kindred spirits I love them all. Southern Cross is one of my favorite Patti Smith Songs. If you want a staged presentation you will disappointed here it shows a slice or real life amongst friends comfortable just being around each other. I loved it RIP Bill.
I can sympathize with people who want to hear Bill speak. Being a Patti Smith fan, I found the audio interesting but will agree Bill talking is far more interesting.
Wish I'd been there; I would gladly have taken Patti into another room and had fun with her, while you guys could have watched the rest of them and not had to listen to the boring song :)
This song found me when I needed it most.

He sent me a postcard.
A month just before he passed.
It kept me going.
It still does.

Exactly, with whatever due respect, it feels and looks like a lot of hangers-on, milking and exploiting their time with a true giant.

One of the best thinkers of the 20th century. To not understand Burroughs is to not uinderstand the 20th century.
Shame to see him, drunk in his later years.

Ya hear that kids: don't do drugs, or might end up a revolutionary iconoclast writer living to the ripe old age of 87.

Her songs need a bridge or another chorus chord structure.

I don't blame patti, I blame the videographer. What a missed opportunity or maybe bill didn't want a camera in his face all day.
