@PutxAxLilxSmile Hello. We use a handpiece with a special bur to polish off the glue. I used to use the "scraper" but don't anymore because it is not a gentle as the handpiece, and also my hand would get very tired. You sound like you're excited to get your braces off. I get them removed April 4th (next month).
Getting braces put on can be a slightly uncomfortable experience, but also very exciting! After they're put on, you'll have a feeling of pulling, and pressure on your jaw, and teeth. Also may cause a headache. Pain killers help. It's not that bad :) so don't be scared. It only SOUNDS terrible, believe me. The tightenings can hurt too, but it depends on how much they tighten. GOOD LUCK! ITS WORTH IT!!

@alexskittycat hey i just got mine off! Don't worry your teeth don't chip! that is just not going to happen i can assure you. Getting them off isn't quick, it is a long process (maybe an hour) but most of it is just relaxing. The only painful part for me was when they took off the glue. It just feels like your teeth are being frozen but that doesn't last long.

@Bubblywaters07 Well, first of all, CONGRATULATIONS!! This is an exciting time for you. Some of the things we use in our for people who have a gag reflex are:
1. Breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth.
2. We play games with our patients, like lift your foot, spin it around, do this forwards, backwards, up&down, etc.
3. There is also a topical spray available that numbs the back of the throat. We don't use this very often in our office.

You are right that there is additional work that needs to be done. I wanted to show the initial process and how easy it is - people are often surprised how quickly the braces can be taken off.
I'm sorry that you had a bad experience and got that very bad headache.
Our process for taking braces off, polishing teeth, taking final photos and x-rays, impressions for retainers and a final treatment conference takes about 50 minutes.
oke, i understand! don't be sorry, my orthodontist just sucks. i had braces for over 4 years while after 2 years my jaw and teeth were straight. my orthodontist was just playing with me and i got a very low self esteem cause with braces i thought i was just ugly! my braces are out for 1 week now and for the first time in 4 years i feel satisfied and pretty.

It always hurts really bad when the orthodontists tightens my wires. I'm supposed to get my braces removed in the summer. Since it hurts bad when I get my wired tightened, will it hurt when I get the brackets taken off?
lucky everyone who has/is getting them off. I won't probably get mine taken off for at least a month or 2 at the least. but it's only cause I made the worst mistake of not wearing my rubber bands for like 2-3 years which sucks
Its best to keep the braces on until the day you will be getting the retainer issued, to avoid possible shifting. Some orthodontist do remove them and then issue you a retainer another day though.

not painful at all. Mine were because I never did the flossing and so plaque got behind brackets and made it harder to get off. But, I've had retainer for 2 weeks and I've forgotten its even there.

it can hurt if you have like really sensitive teeth, but most of the time you'll feel pressure, its notthing long lasting. & it's not that bad. good luck! :)

dont you have to use the.. uhm scrubber thing cause u know when you first put the braces on you put glue on it and soo then... u have to use the miny scruber to scrub the glue off
There are additional steps to the process of removing braces that we didn't show here. This step is the one that is of most concern to my patients, so I showed how comfortable it is to have the braces removed.
After they are removed, we do need to polish off the remaining glue and polish the teeth.
I'm quite surprised that you heard these comments. I'm sure they were just joking around and didn't expect anybody to hear those comments.
If that were my office, I would appreciate a patient letting me, the doctor, know that this was said, because I would not want it to be said again. So if you feel comfortable speaking directly with your orthodontist or writing a letter, that would be helpful.
this is a somewhat strange story of me removing my braces three years ago: I was going to the ortho to remove my upper braces, no pain at all and it felt like he didn't even take em all off:). the next time i went to him, i was just going to check the braces. but then he suddenly said: if you don't mind i could take these off right now. who would say no thanks to that?! and so he did. same as the upper braces. when i was just about to leave after i got my tooth plates or w.e they are called....

It takes about 2 minutes for the acutal braces to pop off. It takes about an hour for all the glue and cement to come off; and on top of that the polishing. Then it takes about 20 minutes to make a retainer. The whole process takes about and hour and fifteen minutes.
Ive got braces (Yesterday) and my front gap is already closing up! But it hurts soo bad and I cant even bite, and they put this filling/glue in my molars and now I can't eat! How do I get this out? ;_;
iv had mine about 5-6 months now mine hurt for about a week(gradualy feeling better) but dont worry...youv got the tightenings to go yet which repeats the pain process..enjoy :P
it kinda depends on if you have an overbite or underbite

Yes it does. :) My teeth were sooo bad, and I had to have mine in for 2 years but I'm getting them off in 2 weeks and I would have only had them on for 1 and a bit years! It all depends on how quickly your teeth move
:) it was nothing. You were really kind and you didnt seem rough with your movements. My ortho was kind but his hands were a bit rough in handling the tools.

All orthodontists do procedures slightly different, so I'm not able to answer your question. I have found it easier to remove all the braces at one time - it's quicker and easier for both the Dr. and our patients.

Hi crazykris1412,
Spaces will put slight pressure on the teeth, so you will notice some tenderness a few hours after they've been put in.
Any medication you would normally take for a headache will reduce that tenderness. And it will go away within the first 2-3 days.

it can hurt if you have like really sensitive teeth, but most of the time you'll feel pressure, its notthing long lasting. & it's not that bad. good luck! :)

Do you have to pay for braces in the USA? even if you are under 16, or under 18 and still at school. If so how much do they actually cost.
Im 16 and have braces but they are free in the Uk from the NHS.

I need to get braces and i reaaaalllyyyyyy want to but i am scraed of when i have them taken off :S can you choose wheather you have a wire thingy or not???? because i want no pain( i am very fussy and sensetive) i am in UK will they also do it tha way over here or is it just in america???? Dear CrazyCoco555,
There are different ways to remove braces. It can be done like I've shown here or they can be removed one by one without the wire in.
I've found it so much easier for our patients and for me to keep the wire attached to the braces and remove them all at once.
Your orthodontist will have a way they feel most comfortable and will generally proceed in that way.
Our goal is to make this experience as positive as it can be and as pain free as it can be.

dont you have to use the.. uhm scrubber thing cause u know when you first put the braces on you put glue on it and soo then... u have to use the miny scruber to scrub the glue off

There are additional steps to the process of removing braces that we didn't show here. This step is the one that is of most concern to my patients, so I showed how comfortable it is to have the braces removed.
After they are removed, we do need to polish off the remaining glue and polish the teeth.

I'm quite surprised that you heard these comments. I'm sure they were just joking around and didn't expect anybody to hear those comments.
If that were my office, I would appreciate a patient letting me, the doctor, know that this was said, because I would not want it to be said again. So if you feel comfortable speaking directly with your orthodontist or writing a letter, that would be helpful.

this is a somewhat strange story of me removing my braces three years ago: I was going to the ortho to remove my upper braces, no pain at all and it felt like he didn't even take em all off:). the next time i went to him, i was just going to check the braces. but then he suddenly said: if you don't mind i could take these off right now. who would say no thanks to that?! and so he did. same as the upper braces. when i was just about to leave after i got my tooth plates or w.e they are called....

It takes about 2 minutes for the acutal braces to pop off. It takes about an hour for all the glue and cement to come off; and on top of that the polishing. Then it takes about 20 minutes to make a retainer. The whole process takes about and hour and fifteen minutes.

Ive got braces (Yesterday) and my front gap is already closing up! But it hurts soo bad and I cant even bite, and they put this filling/glue in my molars and now I can't eat! How do I get this out? ;_;

iv had mine about 5-6 months now mine hurt for about a week(gradualy feeling better) but dont worry...youv got the tightenings to go yet which repeats the pain process..enjoy :P

it kinda depends on if you have an overbite or underbite
my teeth have been perfectly straight for months now but i had to keep my braces on longer because my overbite wasnt completely corrected yet. i finally get them off april 14th :)

Yes it does. :) My teeth were sooo bad, and I had to have mine in for 2 years but I'm getting them off in 2 weeks and I would have only had them on for 1 and a bit years! It all depends on how quickly your teeth move

All orthodontists do procedures slightly different, so I'm not able to answer your question. I have found it easier to remove all the braces at one time - it's quicker and easier for both the Dr. and our patients.
