  • You don't get to be called The Divine One just like that. It happens when you do stuff like 3:59

    .

  • The one and only.

  • divine divine sarah voice

  • She was the greatest singer in American history. There is no other way to describe her. Sass.

  • Miss Vaughan's version of this song always leaves me transfixed!

    Thanks for posting.:)

  • WOW! The fat lady has sung! Now we are all in heaven. . .

  • God this lady is awesome/I was blessed to see The Divine ONE performing at the Beacon in NEW YORK CITY--like I said, I was blessed. thank you Sarah.Respect.

  • marvelous interpretation...again Ms Divine @ her best...wow...wow..wow

  • Yeah, she's the best.

  • Oh, fabulous..she's the BEST! ...diana

  • Sass tuning up a guitar could give you a tingle. Sass singing a very poignant song should forever stop any other performer from trying it. She kills it. The accompaniment is beyond sympathetic, and the audience, albeit adoring, is moved at the times that she so very well plans it. This is pure genius. Master classes in voice should start out by simply showing this and saying, "No one can do this. But we are going to work to this perfection."

  • There are seven people who viewed this video who have no idea what a true musical genius Sarah Vaughan was...

  • Makes me cry. Wonderful. Thank you, Sarah Vaughan

  • Simply the best.

  • This is HEAVEN. Sarah is DIVINE.

  • però la Vaughan diceva che se non avesse avuto la propria voce avrebbe voluto quella di MINa...significherà qcosa, no???

  • solo MINA MAzzini potrebbe accostarsi a lei...

  • Sassy,Ella andBillie they were in a class by themselves, ladies you are missed.

  • amo.

  • WOW

  • Only truly gifted artist have the ability to blend pain. frustration , and longing with joy , hope, and attitude all within the same composition. Mills, Streisand, Gladys Knight, Franklin, and Billie are just a few that come to mind.

Sarah gives us a true taste of joy and sorrow all in one line, run, and note. If you listen closely starting at 3:40 mark in this rendition till the end, you will have the privilege of hearing why she is call the Divine One.

She was "One of a Kind"

  • Beautiful

  • I"m a " CHAKAHOLIC" , SO MY FAVORITE IS CHAKA..but even the great Queen of Funk wouldn' t be able to pull this perfection. I've figured it out: Sarah is unmatched because it' not her voice that is singing...IT'S HERE CHILDHOOD HEART!

    WHAT A CLASSY LADY!

  • I still get misty when I hear the Divine One sing this song...what a beautiful voice!

  • that voice... underrated artist.

  • @babooshky Underrated? She's my favorite singer, male or female, all-time. She is the singer's singer. She is the most deeply appreciated singer of which I can think, save possibly Billy or Ella. Possibly. There is too much to dissect in her singing to ever describe it with justice.

Perhaps she can't be rated highly enough.

  • @fairalways You got it baby!

  • @fairalways Totally agree...I have been a huge fan of Sassy's for over 40 years...

  • The incomperable Sarah Vaughan. Thanks for posting

  • The best version of the song in my opinion

  • I never liked this song until SARAH sang it.......

  • it is unbelievable. when she goes acapella it gives you a chill. She is a genius.

  • I can relate, but once you know better, you do better. I luv me some Sarah, such emotions. I wish the so called singer, just listen to old school and learn something.

  • Absolutely flawless renditition. One of the world's finest singers, male or female. She just owns this song.

  • Absolutely flawless renditition. One of the world's finest singers, male or female

  • OH MY GOD!!! That just brings tears to my eyes!!!

  • dear god its snowing out here thanks for the warmfff sass, feeling better now.

  • dear god

  • Sorry, but Ruthie Henshall is better than that and Barbra Streisand.

  • This song akes me weep with joy...truly sublime. I miss Miss Vaughn.

  • Man it makes me emotional reading all the wonderful things everyone says about Sarah. From what I've read about her, she never felt she really got her due. I wish she was here now to really see all the peoples lives she touched and continues to touch. Once you fall for Sarah, you're in it for life.

  • one of the greatest versions of this song ever.

  • Wow, this made me realize that "the effect of the air they expel out of their voice and expressions" gets me really high. Its not panting or anything like that.

Anita Baker is the first one I discovered of that style I think she might have got it from Sarah. Someone please put a name on it for me.

  • @jPapa2008 I think you're talking about the wide vibrato

  • @jPapa2008 VIBRATO

  • @TheEverydayBlues Thanks, its not vibrato.

  • THE MOST AMAZING PART IS THAT ITS LIVE!!!!

  • Hark the heraled Angel's sing.

  • Pure, incrdible GENIUS!

  • T-T

Wow, It's amazing what Sarah Vaughan can convey with voice alone. Talent in it's purest form, we don't have many singers nowadays who can do that.

  • @Chyix2 We have none who can compare to her. She was one of the finest, if not the finest, popular singers of the past century. I still get goosebumps when I hear her sing...

  • @Chyix2 There weren't many back then either.

  • at 4:00 it brings me to tears! No one uses the mic the way Sassy does.

  • Richness and bliss in her voice...as she sanged this song...lovely!

  • just timeless!

  • I actually built those sets. The experience of watching the making Sass & Brass with Sassy leading the charge was unforgettable. I wish they would rebroadcast those. It was when Cinemax was more than "sexamax."

  • Love my Sarah, my fellow daughter of Newark, NJ.

  • After listening to her its like you are hearing it for the very first time. Just breath taking.

  • I have been obsessed with this song for a month now or so since Zeta sang it at the broadway awards but this woman does it justice she brought me to tears she knows the irony of it. Where are the clowns she can see them standing there looking at her. Damn I only wish she was alive now! What a woman!

  • strepitosa!!!!

  • This is the song I want sung at my funeral. I want everyone to wear red and sing this song at the top of their lungs. Send them in please!!

  • Hearing Sarah Vaughn sing this song ALWAYS gives me chills.

  • @MacariaRage as it does me...she was truly Divine...I listen to her music all the time.

  • hermoso.... su voz era hermosa, no como stas "cantantes" ahora q creen q entre mas alto canten se escuche mas bonito o que entre mas adornos le pongan se escuchara mejor... no es asi solo lo necesario, y acariciaras la cancion!!!

  • I think they should start every session of congress with this song.

  • I think I just saw her soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No one covers this song better then her. How I wish I was living in the 70's to see her best

  • @tantrick That is exactly what an great artist does; they bare their soul - they show their souls to us. So personal and intimate. They have to do it too. They need to.

  • You are missed! Happy to hear you in any way I can, Ache'

  • it made my cry... wonderful. speakless

  • stunning performance, loved it.

  • the lady can sing.

  • how incredible...

  • The divine one, the divine best interperter of this song!

  • Magnificent; I am moved.

    Thanks so much for uploading.

  • 4:01 - 4:10

a sound that is of another world. what a talent she was. so brave, so original.

  • I have heard too many versions of this song to count, however, in my (humble) opinion, the Divine One does it the most justice. Just marvalous!

  • che meraviglia!!! voce caldissima

  • ho caricato una versione migliore a mio parere. prova ad ascoltarla..

  • I love this. Patti Labelle has done this song too and it was off the chain.

  • Here's one of my top five favorite songs. It so hard

to narrow it down to 5 but this is one for sure. I first heard this song

on "Good Times" but I can't find a clip from that episode. In trying to

find it I've found some good renditions.

    I've enjoyed this one.

  • Imagine her auditioning for American Idol. I don't think Simon would have any complaints..

  • That's cute and insulting. Sara Vaughan competing for AI, insulting but funny :)

  • sì, la registrazione è migliore ma l'inquadratura impietosa, il suo disagio fisico distrae troppo così da preferire solo ascoltare.

  • meravigliosa!!!!!

  • THe best vibrato in Jazz!

  • I do love this cover, it gives me a chill down my spine each time I listened to it.

  • I listened to Judy Collins sing this for years but didn't understand it until I heard Sarah Vaughan singing it while I was driving to work one morning. I've been a big fan ever since.

  • Not bad she still sounds great.

  • What a Woman!!!! She always take me to a level of emotion that really hurts! Wonderful!

  • There are no words to express the beauty of her singing. Sarah takes this song to another level of emotion.

  • Long live Sassy, none better than her.

  • Many great singers have done this song very well but, mostly, they missed out on really expressing the irony and regret at the heart of the song.

Many singing actresses have done this song very well, by expressing those things very well. But they don't sing as well

She does both as well as is humanly possibly.

  • @WillInNewHaven I totally understand what you're saying. There's something about her approach, and phrasing. I've made friends and family watch. Her physicality also contributes to teh overall touchingness of the song. I'll point out specifics later.

  • @WillInNewHaven I"m a " CHAKAHOLIC" , SO MY FAVORITE IS CHAKA..but even the great Queen of Funk wouldn' t be able to pull this perfection. I've figured it out: Sarah is unmatched because it' not her voice that is singing...IT'S HERE CHILDHOOD HEART!

    WHAT A CLASSY LADY!

  • unbelievable when she sang that passage acapella..... I cried. My generation will never have a singer like this. She died the year I was born and I think no one can compare to her.

  • wow

  • Sublime vocal from Sarah & the way she gets inside "Send In The Clowns" makes this definitive performance a stunner...incredibly great!

  • Sarah's command of the stage,of the song,of the audience and of the world is powerful

  • thanks for posting--what really strikes me is the universality of the song that so many of the greats have covered it...

  • Van Morrison's version is better!!!

  • Who is that, dumbass?

  • What????

  • Listening to her singing always makes me cry. Pure perfection! Great great lady of jazz

  • Me too mick, and I thought I was the only one, I am moved by her whole life. I have read everything I can find on her, including a couple of biographies and I own most of her recordings.

  • I`ve heard many versions of this songs by some class singers, but this one is RIGHT UP THERE as the absolute best!!!

  • WOW ! Sarah had real Soul ! Must be singing lead in God's choir. Glad to hear I am not alone. She was the TOP of the Class.

  • she will always be my all-time favorite singer. She had presence, a remarkable instrument in that voice of hers and expression and depth matched by none.

  • The legendary songtress, one of my personal all time favs, though I sometimes get chuckles for that, proves even here 40 years after her initial rise to fame, the she is one of the very best, ever. She always struck am emotional cord with me, but with this, its just amazing. I only regret not ever seeing her live. BTW my all time fav by her is Broken Hearted melody, oh yea!

  • Outrageous, honey!

  • heard this sung by many...Sarah is the greatest of ALL TIME!!!Her talent and emotion have me in tears...she's the GREATEST

  • The "Divine One" owns this one.She gets to do all those wonderful things she does with her vocal gymnastics.

  • breathtaking..

I'd love to see that video performance others are describing...

  • Madame Sarah Vaughan is my all time favorite Vocalist and then Mahalia Jackson. She does "Send in the Clowns" its due service that others tried but NO ONE...and I mean NO ONE does this SONG GREATER than Ms. Vaughan

  • Whoosh, she nails it. Thank you for posting.

  • this isn't even her best version in my opinion. One where she is wearing a black dress almost brings me to tears, stupid youtube removed it :( hopefully it will be back up again. It was amazing

  • Is that the video which has an extreme closeup of her face, with sweat dripping down her face?

    I cried at that!

  • Bit of an odd way to describe it but yes I believe it was that one, I enjoyed that one so much she is so amazing. It got pulled from youtube, God knows why lol

  • that version ( the most beautiful for me too) was from her concert in montreal 1983...

  • I love her rendition the best I think :) beautiful

  • It's just about beyond words.

  • Imbued with such exquisite, bittersweet nuance. She expresses the song's profound and tragically funny message about the human condition on the wings of her timeless genius. Such texture and intelligence and mastery!

  • 4:17 OMG!!!

  • The greatest.

  • Dame Sarah Vaughan !

  • marvelous performance of one of the greatest voices of every time!!!!

    amazing Sassy!!!!

  • Beautiful version of this song,it has been done by everyone, and mostly stale versions, but Sarah breathes her own style into it and brings it to new levels, she was wonderful,i love to listen to her music, her talent always amazes me.

    God Bless her soul.

  • This is perfection. I don't think this song can be sang any better then this. Miss Divine, How I wish I could go back in time and just be the audience.

  • i never liked this song until Sas sang it....it sounds like she "knew" this song....

  • Ladyrants knows all and she need not a crystal ball. Now when is someone gonna upload Sarah's big hit from the

    50's, Mr Wonderful?

  • Stunning, just stunning.

    Love from Sunderland. xx

  • THE BEST!!

  • little lady, big heart and a voice without equal

  • A pure joy to watch this great artist performing at her craft.

  • Solid perfection. Long Live Sarah Vaughn

  • She was the greatest singer in American history. Bar none. The greatest. RIP, Sass.

  • 2:56 is just so spine tingling. Lovely :)

  • What can one say. Her rendition of this surpasses everyone, as good as they are, in their own ways. sui generis.

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • so very nice.
