WLL is probably the best version I"ve heard with Mary Lou and Minnesota Blues tucked fabuously in the middle....do you have this up? It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Conney!
@67goldtops He Blackmore has a set rhythm much stronger than Page on stage, even a person who does not see the guitar, looks Higway Star, Strange Kind of Woman, Kill the king to name the best.
Can you cite songs like Ten years Gones, Achilles last stand as a reference in page, the problem is that you speak to someone who is very familiar with the boot of Led Zep, most of its performance is poor, some very good individual services but difficult to reproduce on stage anyway.
Of course Page, after '73, was sloppy as a live player. I wouldn't argue otherwise. Let's talk in the studio. You think "Highway Star" is an example of RHYTHM playing?? Perhaps you need to learn the difference between SOLOS and CHORDS?? Too funny! "Kill the King" is great rhythm playing?? HAHA!! I'd take ANYTHING by the Ramones over that silly example. Here, I'll help you out...SRV=Great rhythm player. Steve Cropper=Great Rhythm player. Hendrix=Great Rhythm player. Blackmore=NOT!
@67goldtops You start to be more precise, but I'm sorry, to compare the songs that I just talk to the Ramones' songs, it's ridiculous, Blackmore was a very good rhythmically speaking, I know the difference, thank you
Oh, you know the difference between rhythm playing and soloing? Why did you list "Highway Star" as an example of Ritchie's RHYTHM PLAYING?? There are amazing licks, yet the only CHORDS I hear are played by John Lord. So, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
Man, you just don't have a fucking clue. "LAZY" is a great rhythm guitar song? REALLY?? You clearly have no idea that there are SOLOS, where a player plays individual notes on individual strings. There are also CHORDS, in which the player fingers the chord shape and then STRUMS. Get it yet? "LAZY" is a GUITAR SOLO, inspired by Eric Clapton's "Stepping Out," which is also a guitar SOLO that Clapton recorded w/ John Mayall's Blues Breakers. Neither is an example of RHYTHM PLAYING.
That Blackmore has good timing and phrasing (choice of notes & rhythm in which they're played) does NOT mean he's a good rhythm player. He's not. He doesn't play CHORDS. Would you like some specific examples guitar driven songs that feature solid rhythm playing? Joe Walsh on "Funk 49." Keith RIchards on "Can't You Hear Me Knocking." SRV on "Couldn't Stand the Weather." Townshend on "Young Man Blues." ANYTHING by Chuck Berry...THOSE are RHYTHM guitar songs. LAZY is not. Understand?
@67goldtops But you must be stoned to heroin to escape such a crap about the Stones, unbelievable, I can name you 10 groups that broke the Stones on stage in all registers, let's be serious, for pity's sake ...
@67goldtops Led Zeppelin ? King Crimson ? Deep purple ? Moutain ? Ten Years After ? The who ? Yes ? Grateful Dead ? Blue Cheer ? Necromandus ? The Pink Fairies ? Wishbone Ash ?
Your silly list is as irretrievably inept as your command of English. The only bands from that list who could compare with the Stones at their peak are the Who and Zeppelin.
Wishbone Ash, LAUGH MY ASS OFF!
Do yourself a favor, Francois...Get your hands on some Stone's bootlegs from the '72-'73 tour and listen to the chemistry between Keith and Mick Taylor. Then you can tell me more about how Blackmore's solos on "Highway Star" equal great rhythm guitar! What priceless comedy!
You never listened to the groups I mentioned, I quote groups of all kinds on stage because their goal is the same consistency and improvisation.
I listened to bootleg known and lesser known Stones, some are of excellent level, my favorite concert are those of the Australian tour at 73, but there is too much mastery, not enough to take risks musically to get to the wonders of improvisation
I am still awaiting your explanation of the level of Blackmore.
More laughable assertions from Francois!! I "never listen to the groups" you mentioned??
HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU KNOW WHO I'VE LISTENED TO?
I've seen the Grateful Dead over sixty times. I've seen Yes over a dozen times. I've seen the Who over 20 times. I've seen Jimmy Page, in various forms, play live over 2 dozen times. I've seen Blackmore play live w/ Deep Purple when Joe Lynn Turner was in the band. I've seen Alvin Lee several times. I've seen the guys YOU can only read of.
My mentioning some of the bands I've seen was in direct response to YOUR comment. YOU started the discussion of which bands I've seen, when you erroneously PRESUMED to know which bands I've seen and which I haven't. YOU changed the discussion.
When did Rock get "smaller"? Not just Zepplin, but all bands back then were bigger than life. Stadiums filled with 85K+ people for weeks on end. And they looked bigger, played bigger, and just basically "lived" bigger. Now all we got pretty boy "pop stars" doing mall gigs for tween girls. WTF, bring the real rock back. The rock of Immigrant Song, the rock of Black Dog, the rock that millions of people, old & young, even decades later still acknowledge as epic. The rock that MEANT something.
@starstarstar42 I miss it too, but keep in mind, back then bands had to tour to make money and they spent a good 7 months a year on the road. I also attribute that to why the older bands always stuck around longer without breaking up after 1.7 years to "pursue each owns interests"........... I've also seen comments (not from you) that the bands from this era weren't good live performers.....i call shenanagins on that scheise. Some of these kids can't fathom a band touring on an old yellow bus

Thank you! Just finished listening to it. Very nice. It's a shame Page is such a perfectionist that he can't release this. It's a beautiful version, sounds like maybe Bonham is joining Plant on the chorus. Whatever, maybe one day the vaults will be opened for all to hear.
Indeed. I personally love Robert's singing here. Probably not perfect in a technical sense but his voice has such a haunting quality. And his varying intonation makes the original recording far more interesting (at least to my ears) than the "fixed" pendant on How....
But then the overall sound quality of the official release is just superb. So in the end we have to congratulate Page for his perfectionism.
PS: Though I have to say that the 'Tangerine' rendition isn't quite up to earlier ones.
@Grubbsy its called L A Drone and they played it before the immigrant song to build excitement and its jimmy playing an acoustic guitar with a violin bow with various sounds layered in
@Conneyfogle I thought so. The L.A Drone is too long, and the recordings for "How the West was Won" was made July 27, 1972 at the Long Beach Arena in California right?
Another good one for a good powerful drum sound from Bonzo on this tune is the Houston '71 show. Not sure what month, but the decibels put out by his drumming on that one pretty much overpowers Page's guitar.
This is really heavy. Pagey must have done a lot of editing for How the West Was Won. But I do like the official live version better because it sounds perfect. Its kinda nice to hear the actual raw concert though.
Yeah, this sounds way better than on How the West Was Won. I love L.A. Drone. It should've been this long on How the West Was Won. I'm in the process of creating my own droning sound.
Go Page & Jonesy playing acoustic guitars with violin bows in F# and layering the sounds!!!!
my school mascot is the viking and this song is played at every rally. sadly, that's how most of the kids at school know of this song.
