Great job Sir I have always loved the sound of them and My wife picked me up one as a gift I try it hear and there on the farm around the fire But that whole teeth thing on it just pushes me away Keep up the great sounds my man Go Bless
@zePippin amen to that........has always sounded best with at least bass, guitar and drums laying down a bed of rhythm and some chords. This video was created about the first week i owned that camera in 2006 and was just experimenting. Thx for commenting.
@zePippin Good question-many answers. With a good attitude and a good instrument a person could probably be able to enjoy some music in a short time. Developing breath and rhythm techniques might take a lifetime. Either way, I've found it has enriched my life and has enabled me to cross paths with some amazing people. A worthy adventure from my perspective.
You Sir are very talented. Thanks for this video. I am just beginning to learn this instrument. I find it very calming to the soul. I think Americans need more exposure to the Jew's Harp. We market them (mostly) as a kids toy, but there is soooo much more to be learned. Thanks for posting this. God Bless.
Greetings from Sweden! You are realy good, sir. I have been playing Jew's harp for about 2 years now. I have a bas harp and a "tenor" harp in my collection. The name for Jew's harp on swedish is: Mungiga (<Muunjiiga). NIce video and i like your song.
@p8aurora I've seen a bamboo version, but wasn't sure of the name. Thanks for sharing the info about Bungkau. Always learning something. Have a sweet day in Borneo!
@metallica6669999 That's a great question! I searched odds makers in Vegas and they don't want to touch it. As in any human activity, a little caution goes a long way in preventing an accident. If you place your teeth right---it can't happen-------and long live the piano player on the Titanic. Please forgive my rambling---just back from Canyons of Utah and still a bit spaced.
@JacquesZupp That warms my heart even on a 105 degree summer day in Arizona. May all your musical adventures exceed your expectations. It continues to be an amazing instrument to me!
@YHWHisGOD Congratulations on discovering the trace amounts of cacti left in Hank's system after that fateful night at the Spirit Room in Jerome, Arizona back in the 70's. There's been no fuel additives for a long time, but the residual effect can last a lifetime................
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Thanks for the upload. When I was a wee lad my dad had one of these and when I was older I always wondered what it was. But tonight it was an answer on Jeopardy and I was really excited that I found out the name.
Im trying to find where to buy one from, any suggestions?
I've had good experience with a company from Germany called Dan Moi. Search danmoi and you should find them. Nice selection of quality instruments and reliable delivery. Thanks for you comments!
It's also known as a khomus, vargan, maultommel, guimbarde, gengong, koukin, trump and scciapensieri among other names depending on where in the world you are.
a friend of mine who is a real cowboy once told me, "If the storm gets so bad you can't see where you're going, drop the reins and stay in the saddle. Your horse will get you back home." I dropped the reins a long time ago and I'm still in the saddle. If I ever make it back home I'll answer your question.
yeah...some better than others. Each musician has their own preference. I like the ones from Austria for their tone and craftsmanship. Check out the Dan Moi website in Germany if you'd like to see a large selection from all around the world.
Bought it at Central Music in Phoenix, Arizona. It has "England" stamped into the metal frame 8 times, so i think i know what country it originated in. i haven't come across anymore since I got it.
Jaw Harp Jew Harp same thing, diffrent parts of the world, made a bit different, I believe it started in Egypt then later the Jews made more, as Egypt started before the Jews did.
I believe it was first made in New Zealand.. You guys are so stupid. You shoulda known it was New Zealand. Dumbasses. New Zealand. You guys are out of your respective elements. You are like small children, wandering into a movie thats halfway over and asking 20 fuckin questions. It was New Zealand. New Zealand.
The Jew's harp, jaw harp, mouth harp, Ozark harp, marranzano pancake, or Omaha Flapjack is thought to be one of the oldest musical instruments in the world [1]; a musician apparently playing it can be seen in a Chinese drawing from the 3rd century BC [2]. Despite its common English name, and the sometimes used Jew's trump, it has no particular connection with Judaism. Also it was found in Ancient Egypt, I am not asking, I am answering. Good day sir.
what do you think you are talking about? that story is very obviously fabricated..... Marranzano pancake? Dude, come on. You gotta try harder than that. Where did you get this bogus information? Come up with true facts before you post comments on youtube, please. Fuck you, but have a good day.
Oh I dunno, somthing called a book, also reports of Jawharps being found in old Egyptian settlements, I dunno if you've ever heard of books, unlike the "internet" it's written on this lovely thing called paper, few people use this alien item anymore. good day, I remove myself from any communications involving you from here on, trying is not involved here, facts are.
My 80 year old dad thought there was something wrong with his television when I first showed this to him. He still never got that it's just an effect. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
You might want to readjust the position you hold it to your teeth. If properly positioned, it shouldn't touch your teeth. You might check out bugotak's video on how to play one.
nice tune there man... if you'd like some inspiration from other player doing whole and ancient tunes search for UKM-munnharpe or fanitullen. that would give you a different view of this instrument..
The first one I got in Tucson, AZ in 1975, is supposed to be from Nashville and has the letters RICH etched in it. Haven't seen any since. I'd suggest item MMU-3 from the Dan Moi website in Germany which is a harp made in Hungary and has a similar look and tone for 22 euro.
I've played some that are only 3 euros verses more expensive. The quality of the tone seems to increase with the expense of the instrument. A Steinway piano costs more than a Yamaha, but I prefer a Yamaha. I guess bottom line is whatever makes you happy.
Yeah, it's a video editing effect. My 79 year old Dad still doesn't understand that, bless his heart. He thinks there's something wrong with his TV or his DVD player when it gets to that part.
It's been called a jews harp much longer than it's been called a jaw harp. It's also known as a khomus, vargan, maultommel, guimbarde, gengong, koukin and scciapensieri among other names depending on where in the world you are. Scholars call it a jews harp, but I've called it a jaw harp for 35 years while my brain has cooked in the Arizona desert and the instrument has never protested. If you live in a free country, call it whatever you want. Thanks for asking for my viewpoint!
In Scotland it's called a TRUMP, sometimes spelled THRUMP....though I've never heard it played in Scottish traditional music (I would love to, if anyone has a recording??)
I have a small stockpile of harps and offer them at concerts. Three instruments found new homes just yesterday at a show in Oracle near Tucson, Arizona. I'll send you a message with more details. Thanks for asking.
$10 will get you a j-harp mounted on a piece of Arizona cholla cactus and illustrated instructions. $20 for a higher quality harp and $40 for a German maultrommel. Send a message to my youtube account if you're interested.
I am surprised on who introduced this instrument into Carnatic (Karnatik) music of South India. Carnatic is a devotional classical music of South India. This instrument is very much used to accompany the mridangam and ghatam
Thanks for sharing this information. I keep learning so much about this instrument that I never knew. I look forward to listening to the music you've described.

Anywhere from $20-$200. The Dan Moi site has a large selection. soundforhealth also carries jew's harps as well as instruction videos. I can't tell you the best for you, but avoid a product called a Snoopy's Harp.
Congratulations! Not difficult to play, but could take a lifetime to master. I continue to learn from others. Check out bugotak video "How to play Jew's Harp" and any of the 100+ videos in the YouTube group "Jaw Harp Junkies". Most important: have fun.

I want to play a jaw harp! Does anyone know how much they cost and who are the best?

Anywhere from $20-$200. The Dan Moi site has a large selection. soundforhealth also carries jew's harps as well as instruction videos. I can't tell you the best for you, but avoid a product called a Snoopy's Harp.

ok i found an austrian one at the dan moi site and it´s cheap. Just ordered it, is it difficult to play?

Congratulations! Not difficult to play, but could take a lifetime to master. I continue to learn from others. Check out bugotak video "How to play Jew's Harp" and any of the 100+ videos in the YouTube group "Jaw Harp Junkies". Most important: have fun.

Oh, I just got to the end of your video...and I did chip my teeth when I first got it, both of my front teeth. Oops. :(
