@ODIPORIS I don't think this counts as black metal. It has elements of pop music. The part that begins 06:24 sounds like A-ha (norwegian 80s pop band) for instance. Is Nothing Else Matters one of the best thrash metal songs? But Metallica are among "the big four" thrash bands, aren't they? How come Nothing Else Matters isn't thrash metal then? Aha! Also, Enslaved never was typically black metal, but leaned more towards "viking metal", of which they are one of the most famous bands.

@drumsistkrieg1349 Nope, read it again, with different glasses. Some of their early stuff is definitely in the realm of bm, though they usually didn't call it bm themselves. I remember when their first album came out, it was then thought of as something "different", I think it was the first time I heard the term "viking metal" being used. That was in 1994 I think. But it was definitely some type of black metal then, before they became more Pink Floyd and Opeth-ish.

You may think I'm a noob, but I know my shit, listened to black metal for 19 years now. The chorus on this song is almost like QOTSA, do you really think this would have happened in the olden golden days? This is a kind of hybrid between black metal, pop and symphonic/progressive rock. Believe it or not. Don't argue with me:p

Wow. Enslaved have really traveled far beyond the limits of being "trve kvlt" black metal and have developed their own sound. And they were heading in this direction long before Opeth became trendy, to my knowledge anyway, so more power to them. Every part of this song is just perfect, and I do believe I need to get this CD now. The last two minutes in particular...wow. Just...wow.

The lyrics on this are great, and complement the music well- its obviously a criticism on Christianity, but Enslaved does it in an emotional, classy way

I am always so impressed with extent of Enslaved's knowledge of the Poetic Edda and the runes --- this quality lends their work a depth that is often missing from so-called "Viking"-themed metal. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy hearing epic tales of blood and battles, but this unique take on Odin's nine days and nine nights hanging on the "old and wind-cold tree" is incredibly moving to me.....
