To me it looks like the guy who slipped might have been in a worse situation had they not carefully taken the shots. It came towards him, and turned before the shots were fired, and was likely trying to gore him with it's horn. Being as low as he was, getting a hole in the neck wouldn't have been out of the question. If you look at this from the shooter's point of view, though, he wasn't directly behind when they shot. In that situation I can see no improvement, other than not falling down.
