thank you both so much.  I am not a Jew but I lived on a Kibbutz between school and uni in the early 70's and been fascinated by Jewish history since. This music is just wonderful, steeped in history and meaning to the people singing it

@TimeSurfer101 Sephardic Jews are the descendants of Jews living in the Iberian peninsula (modern day Spain and Portugal) until the time of their expulsion by the Catholic rulers in 1492. Because of both their interaction with Arabs ruling Iberia until the Reconquista by the Spanish, and because of the lands they emigrated to upon their expulsion (largely Turkey and the Balkans), they have distinct traditions from other Jews, including musically.

..Not only from Iberian peninsula, but also from Sicily and Southern Italy (at that time under the Spanish control). The history of Sicilian Jews is very very similar to Spanish Jews. Moreover in Sicily it's possible to find typically sephadic surnames as Maimon or Castro etc. after the 1492 many Sicilian Jews - like the Jews from Spain - found shelter in Turkish Empire, especially in Thessalonika (today Greece)
