as compared to which country? Your from the fucking UK. Are you seriously that fucking arrogant, or is it just mere irogance which leads you to spout such verbal filth?
well speaking of verbal filth you get an A class spot on that one, could you not curb the obscenities and speak intelligently? or are you one of those australian drovers who take the ocassional swig of kangeroo urine? anyway australia is a want to be united states spooner if ever there was one mate rascist attitude and all.
The only reason i couldn't retain the language, was because i was so disgusted at the hypocrisy of your statement. The UK was the country who initially killed all the Aborigines. It was the UK who destroyed countries such as Mali, and other African nations, with their expansionist and colonising ethos. And your comment about whether or not i was swigging kangeroo urine, is a prime example of our own racism. You archetypal hypocrite.
i would argue that we already have. We are working to increase the standard of living of Aborigines, their rate of literacy and numeracy, and their length of time for which they live.
Our cts have introduced various bills such as Native Title to try to give land back to Aborigines which was stolen from them, by the English many years ago.
So although you may have 'learned the error of your ways' everyone else is still forced to clean up after your mess.
no i am not a rascist not in the slightest degree, i just spoke in anger thats all. that jackson jive bit on australian tv really got me very cross, michael jackson just recently died and they just disrespected his memory and his family with that dispicable act.
pfft.... what a load of crap, any donkey with half a brain could see that those guys had no malice intentions, one of them was black ffs! On the other hand Jay Leno makes a racist joke about Jackson and its met with cheers and laughter, the yanks are hippocrites and so are you. Having not long returned from the uk, i know personally how seggregated th uk is socially and racially, and dont get me started on the history. Your comments have shown what an ignorant twat you are.
well, to make a long argument short rascism is everywhere i wish it never existed in britian because i want british citizens to be better than the yanks or any other country that has had racial strife. i just wish britian could be a true model for promoting fairness to other people.
I agree, the Hey Hey sketch was a racist act, not intentionally, but more blame should be placed on the producers of that show. But for goodness sake, does that excuse your comments about Australian swigging kangaroo urine? And given Tony Blair's unblinded devotion to Bush, UK is just as guilty as sucking up to the US. We've voted Howard's party out though, you haven't. Not to mention the numerous race riots in the UK, have they really learnt their way? I'd think before commenting... hmmmm?
O r maybe it goes deeper still, could be that the song itself is a lament of the overall and excess consumption of society and a reflection of the destructive nature of mankind and what men themsleves are capable of , if we don't make changes soon to our ways , we ourselves will become extinct or maybe something simple! It's open to interpretation really!
The song, like several others by the band, refers to early white settlement in Australia and is sung from the perspective of the Aborigines who had laid claim to the land prior to the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. The song's chorus carries a far more empowering message than the verses, featuring the lyrics, "We carry in our hearts the true country / And that cannot be stolen / We follow in the steps of our ancestry / And that cannot be broken".
White man came and took everything alright. Now oil companies exploit on their land and give them millions each year in oil dividends revenues and land claims settlements. They now have more money for booze than ever before!
This should be a spokesong for all the people in this wor;ld who are forced out of their real home and made to "fit in" to what the "white man" has constructed for them, good intentions or otherwise.
I see it very similar to pride by U2, "carry in our hearts the true country and that cannot be stolen" "they took his life, they could not take his pride" As an Aussie I loved going to see The Oils, yes Garrett is out of his element now, a bit naive thinking he could make changes in a please the majority political system, his appointment could've been a way for the government to crush idealists, whilst changes may not be being made, I'm sure he still carries his ideals in his heart..,.
Song says we dont follow your rules, etc. etc.. white man took em away.... Well thats probably better than yellow commie man beating crap out them continually and killing their kids... Ask those folks in Tibet lesser of 2 evils might be a good thing.
Not an attitude really. Its truth, and yes there was an alternative, they could all be speaking japanese, but that would mean being slaves and being beaten daily... But the White man stopped em...
South Korea tuned out okay I think? I'm from a country which was ruled by the Spanish for centuries and people were also treated like slaves and then left to live off with poverty, I guess most foreign invaders go off with a bad start. And now that I'm seeing the outcome of the Spanish rule makes me sometimes wish that we just got conquered by the Japanese or the Whites instead.
Alien, AngloSaxons have done wonders for the world, spread disease, plundered civilisations and enslaved human beings. Dont blame white people in general for the attrocities they carried out, Scots are a distinctly different race and have suffered at the hands of the English as have the Irish.
yeah alien whatever, ascends to the stars via their asshole, squrting all the way!. Cant believe this imbicile loves that KKK white ascending ...blah blah blah crap. Cant take this self loving poo orifice of a person serously LMFAO...

I am a huge nascar fan, and there is now an Aussie driver called MARCOS AMBROSE... Very good driver. Take it easy down under, I hope to visit there someday.
However, unlike us retards, white man feed the world

Peter garret was great as a musician. Since becoming a so-called politician, all his decissions regarding enviromental issues have been piss poor. Week as cats piss. How about a comeback Tour just like John Farnham............Maybe some serious body rocking live on stage would soothe your soul...............Rock on..........

Estas equivocado. Fue al revez: un político se plagió la letra de Midnight Oil para un discurso. Se llama Jerry Brown y fue candidato a la presidencia en Estados Unidos.
Makes me sad to see Peter now. I wish he never had gone into politics. I guess he thought he could make a difference. Looks to me that he has seen that there are various points of view and that decisions must benefit the majority. Sad times when an icon of the minority has been destroyed
Just yesterday I re-listened to one of my 80s icons... with shivers on my back.
An official source about what HE thinks about this, sth able to explain his decision (beyond the "access to power"-problem ecc.). Was there an alternative for him as a minister?
Open question: What do you, down there, as those more directly affected, think about it all?*
Never been to AUS + really know only some of its basic dates and contexts.
'Left' voters (where I think Midnight Oil fans mostly belong) has maybe 40% power in ALP
+ a minor party (the Greens).
Garrett probably wanted to join the greens, but saw more power in the ALP. So now he announces policy to Australia which he probably voted against in Caucus.
Die Deutschen gave the world the term "Realpolitik",
I love that Midnight Oil has always made a political statement with their music. Just amazing... It's a wonder that after Beds are Burning they didn't catch on more here in the US. They were an extremely good band. Miss them...
I love this band they realy tray to say something to EVERYONE they only are in the shoes of the other, Scars from the past. Ingland,France,Spain think what hapend 400 or 500 years a go now we cant live in Peace? U.S.E
this song is not about white power its about the crimes the white man committed against the native people. I am a white person and im ashamed of what my people did to people of different skin color or beliefs
Ya, let's all blame the white man for all the world's problems while Africa, latin, South America and every other non anglo looks for a hand out from the white man. Look what's going in Zimbabwe, Sout Africa since the whites no longer are in control..
Careful what you wish for, because the anglos can only take so much of being blamed for the worlds problems when we sit and watch the fruits of our labor being sucked dry by the leftists bloodseeking leaches of the world.
musically probably MNO's best song. not cut down intended, but they'd admit to being rather limited musically. but I guess for them, music was just a vehicle.
Cochrane, I agree. As much respect I have for nature, it has become a big Money Rock for Australia more then anything. Anyone up to pay $1000 in airfare and then car rental and hotels and restaurants to see a big rock? I am sorry if there are any Aussies here but that's the truth. For that matter, as amazing as the Grand Canyon is here in America, it has become a big moneypit for Arizona. What a shame! :(
When your kind of white man came to our region called N.W.F.P Pakistan arong 1900 A.D, they were ran out and thrown into the yolks of hitler begging only to be helped then? No harm intended but the usual daily shit. Hahahaha...
Yes, he did miss the point:( Mr. Churchill, the PM of UK then, did visit USA for help during WW II. He might have hi-lighted his ancestry i.e mother being American or so, according to American History class II -an undegraduate course? He might be under illusion (sp?) of that perhapes....:) Nope!
I dig this beautiful video! I wish the U.S.A had a visionary rock star like Peter that could be appointed to an important environmental post-.& make things HAPPEN!
lets hope the usa can catch on soon i love the what happen with this group the return of land to the natives and the teaching of tolerence that is this bands legacy
GREAT SONG! Too bad so many of us in the US only remember "Beds are Burning"...the most chilling line from Midnight Oil is from the song "Warakurna"... " not since Lassiter was here...black man's got a lot to fear!"
Some people laugh.. some never learn.. this land must change or it must BURN!!!!
"Property rights don't exist where there is no government or legal system to establish them."
Oh my god. No offence but I found that very sad state of thinking. So like we know history of united states, that it was right to took off the lands from natives and put them on some darn reservates? Just becaused they are no organized? No laws? No, because they are weaker
American natives, Australia, Tibet...we live in wonderful world...
you are a very sad person the hate you have is horriable this song is part of the returning of aries rock if america could have followed suit what a wonderful thing now we have a black man in office i bet we follow suit now stopping hating people you'll feel better
I take issue with your assumption that to stop hating is to feel better. Hate, like all emotions, serves an evolutionary purpose. It makes more sense to think of emotions in terms of oscillations from a neutral emotional equillibrium, each with their own context relevant purpose. Thus i think it is sometimes good to express ones hate.
Just like i feel a need to express my view that midnight oil is what you get if you holler ham-fisted left wing platitudes over jarring post-pub rock riffs.
this band is retarded. white man took everything? Just think about what Australia is. It's a massive continent that had a small native population with no organised civilization or government. Of course it was inevitably going to colonised by civilized people. Property rights don't exist where there is no government or legal system to establish them.
This self-serving casuistry is so shamefully idiotic, hypocritical and illogical that it marks anybody who uses it as nothing better than a religious Fundamentalist.
Of course, i do not claim that it is morally just or unjust to colonize these places provided you have the resources to do so, the point is that you will do so if possess said resources and a profit maximizing incentive. Human history is predicated on warfare between different tribes on the basis of resources.
It is foolish to pontificate (without any historical context) on the morality of actions taken 200 years ago using our own culturally relative moral standards. What about the native tribes who killed each other and 'stole land', only the descendants of the losing tribes don't exist to claim injustice.
But this is the real point: think of the massive opportunity cost of not colonizing Australia. Advanced cities, generations of people, technology etc. would never have existed.
Yes, imagine Australia without any white man and woman. Maybe all of earth would be talking Chinese insteed of English. And I think you are dead wrong about progress. Marx didnt come to Australia, aparently you did.
Social Darwininst tripe! The ends justifies the means. Advanced cities and technology for the white man only. The paternalistic nonsense of 'civilsing' the barbarous masses is a cultural construct born out the Enlightenment where racial science was first being discussed. These ideas were been discredited a long time ago. Even Colonial Governor Gordon in writing to William Gladstone despaired at the treatment of the Aborigines and the barbarous nature of the WHITE settler.
I think you're refering to the notion of Terra Nullius. This was the ideological justification for the expropriation of native lands. However, it fails on many points. The native Australians DID have pre-existing notions of property and a system of tribal government-just because they didn't write it down in English does not mean it never existed.
Saw the Oils in Philly in 87?88? They were at the Tower Theatre...probably 2/3 full...boy were those people who didn't show up foolish...blew the roof off the place...absolutely astonishing presence, power and musianship...PG was a force! If they tour...PLEASE come to New Mexico!
if it's absolutely perfect, like you can run a metrenome in time with the whole track and it won't waver, it means they're using a click track in the studio. Unless you're going for a White Stripes feel most bands do nowadays.

A big hello from a GER living in ITA

Was denk Ich? Garrett ist Dummkopf!
Our 2 main political parties:
ALP (Government- 'Center')
Coalition (Opposition- 'Center-Right').
Die Deutschen gave the world the term "Realpolitik",
nicht wahr?

this song is not about white power its about the crimes the white man committed against the native people. I am a white person and im ashamed of what my people did to people of different skin color or beliefs
freemanlisa445 2 years ago 10
Ya, let's all blame the white man for all the world's problems while Africa, latin, South America and every other non anglo looks for a hand out from the white man. Look what's going in Zimbabwe, Sout Africa since the whites no longer are in control..
Careful what you wish for, because the anglos can only take so much of being blamed for the worlds problems when we sit and watch the fruits of our labor being sucked dry by the leftists bloodseeking leaches of the world.

American natives, Australia, Tibet...we live in wonderful world...

this idiot band used 'white man' oppressor technology such as amplification, electricity, recording to sing their sanctimonious preachings
liarlielielie 2 years ago
you are a very sad person the hate you have is horriable this song is part of the returning of aries rock if america could have followed suit what a wonderful thing now we have a black man in office i bet we follow suit now stopping hating people you'll feel better
freemanlisa445 2 years ago
I take issue with your assumption that to stop hating is to feel better. Hate, like all emotions, serves an evolutionary purpose. It makes more sense to think of emotions in terms of oscillations from a neutral emotional equillibrium, each with their own context relevant purpose. Thus i think it is sometimes good to express ones hate.
Just like i feel a need to express my view that midnight oil is what you get if you holler ham-fisted left wing platitudes over jarring post-pub rock riffs.
liarlielielie 2 years ago
this band is retarded. white man took everything? Just think about what Australia is. It's a massive continent that had a small native population with no organised civilization or government. Of course it was inevitably going to colonised by civilized people. Property rights don't exist where there is no government or legal system to establish them.
liarlielielie 2 years ago
"Property rights don't exist where there is no government or legal system to establish them."
So if i colonize Maine or Copenhagen its allright becouse theres no legal system that says I have to stop doing it...
Gosh, where did you come from Boy.
Alindahl2002 2 years ago
This self-serving casuistry is so shamefully idiotic, hypocritical and illogical that it marks anybody who uses it as nothing better than a religious Fundamentalist.
Of course, i do not claim that it is morally just or unjust to colonize these places provided you have the resources to do so, the point is that you will do so if possess said resources and a profit maximizing incentive. Human history is predicated on warfare between different tribes on the basis of resources.
liarlielielie 2 years ago
It is foolish to pontificate (without any historical context) on the morality of actions taken 200 years ago using our own culturally relative moral standards. What about the native tribes who killed each other and 'stole land', only the descendants of the losing tribes don't exist to claim injustice.
But this is the real point: think of the massive opportunity cost of not colonizing Australia. Advanced cities, generations of people, technology etc. would never have existed.
liarlielielie 2 years ago
Yes, imagine Australia without any white man and woman. Maybe all of earth would be talking Chinese insteed of English. And I think you are dead wrong about progress. Marx didnt come to Australia, aparently you did.
Alindahl2002 2 years ago
Social Darwininst tripe! The ends justifies the means. Advanced cities and technology for the white man only. The paternalistic nonsense of 'civilsing' the barbarous masses is a cultural construct born out the Enlightenment where racial science was first being discussed. These ideas were been discredited a long time ago. Even Colonial Governor Gordon in writing to William Gladstone despaired at the treatment of the Aborigines and the barbarous nature of the WHITE settler.
Irisplove 2 years ago
you are misinformed and a fool
nov112671 2 years ago
You should read up on aboriginal ideals, you will see that they did have property rights.
jaack456 2 years ago
I think you're refering to the notion of Terra Nullius. This was the ideological justification for the expropriation of native lands. However, it fails on many points. The native Australians DID have pre-existing notions of property and a system of tribal government-just because they didn't write it down in English does not mean it never existed.

The vocal harmonies in this song are insanely perfect. And did you ever notice that the tempo on each song on the album is exactly perfect?
Sweet writing, performance, and production.
PhilosopherEight 3 years ago
if it's absolutely perfect, like you can run a metrenome in time with the whole track and it won't waver, it means they're using a click track in the studio. Unless you're going for a White Stripes feel most bands do nowadays.

düdübdüüüüdübdüdüdüüüüüü.... f*cking great! will never forget this song... good old days ;-)
hammerhi99 3 years ago
Yes, I understand about click tracks.
My point was how they chose the exact perfect tempo for each song, not that the tempo never wavers.
