The Ecstasy in Open mod with the gain down is a clean boost, no color, no need to blend clean signal, it is your clean signal. Sometimes you have to look down to see of it is on because other than the volume or slight EQ enhancement you can't tell if it is on, that is transparent to the max.
BTW, OCD, had several even a mod done on the v4 to reduce the fizzy gain, almost went for the RTO but ended up with the Wampler. Wampler's overdrives and high gains are the best you are going to find. Barber, Lovepedal and the Cochran Timmy but a little harder to obtain. Great higher end custom designed pedals.
I use the Ecstasy Drive and I just dig all the Brian Wampler pedals. Great stuff. The Ecstasy has 3 different diode modes into a primo op amp, which is like 3 overdrive circuits. Here is the Open or transparent mode. He gets a lot less gain at this setting than on my rig. I tend to keep the gain about 9-10:00 and a little more EQ enhancement. Great pedal. Never used the Fulltone but it is a really gainy pedal, a stacked circuit made to be really fuzzy. I am thinking this guys pickups are low pwr
By the way, all pedal reviews should be done like this one. Quick talking but with articulated details. Quick back and forth A/Bing of tones/sounds. Great vid!
Transparancy in pedals to me is more of the direct signal mixed back in with the overdrive. Some OD`s(let alone full on distortion units) don`t do that. They give you full direct effected sound. Some OD`s mix the clean sound of your guitar back in, hence more transparant of an effect. Some units even have a MIX control which is interesting and could be very effective as well. IMO depends on the use: In front of a clean amp; In front of a tube amp verging on breaking up, Song you`re playing...
Excellent video. Finally someone explaining not how good pedals are, but what their purpose is and what they exactly do, can and cannot. Very illuminating. Thanks.
Ive never been a fan of overdrive pedals until recently. In the past I would get all of the gain from my amp and didnt see the use for them. I recently purchased a pedal called the Holy Fire and it changed my opinion of the whole pedal thing. I really dig these 2 pedals as well. In my current setup I use the Holy Fire and a Rat Proco for 2 different settings. So far I couldnt be happier, but Im really loving the PlimSoul, that thing growls!
I bought the Wampler upon watching your video. It is fantastic. In my band the keyboards, bass, vocals and second guitar tend to live in that midrange area and I actually feel that the Wampler does not add to that midrange mud. I am probably going to get the Plimsoul also to use in a band where I am the only guitarist. I use a very early 68 Super Reverb and an SRV Strat, Custom Shop 60s closet classic strat ...how do you set your tone stack on a Super Reverb? Mine is 7,5,3 Reverb on 3. Thanks!
Hi ! very useful video, thank you very much, that really helps. I red most of the comments here and seems like you're using a fender blues junior amp? Is that correct ? Thanks. Pascal
I'm thinking about buying my first overdrive-pedal. I had decided to get a Tubecreamer TS808 or perhaps TS9, but since I saw your demo of the Wampler Ecstasy, I'm not so sure anymore. I am very fond of the transparacy, can I get that with a tubescreamer? Given I want the SRV/Mayer type of overdrive, what do think would be the best choice?
@snelseb You will absolutely NOT get transparency with a Tubescreamer. The Tubescreamer has a very pronounced midrange 'bump', so much so that it tends to sound a bit thin on the low end. The Tubescreamer and the Ecstasy are even farther apart in sound than the Ecstasy and the PlimSoul.
@snelseb I hated the TS9 for what it's worth. IMO, both of these pedals, the Fulltone OCD, Xotic BB preamp, MXR GT-OD, Lovepedal Eternity and so many others are far superior to the TS9's harsh mid-spike and nasally honk. Of course it's a classic and has its place in the blues world, and can be used as a boost for rock and metal. I just don't like the pedal and feel that you can't use the whole range of the tone control because it only sounds good turned way down. 808's are cool however.
Hey Anthony, I've been in the market for some new gear lately... My current gear is a Les Paul Studio and a Peavy Vypyr, however I LOVE playing blues, which the Peavy's not great for... I've read online the most common mistake of a beginning blues player is buying too many pedals and not a good enough amp; what's your take on this, also, do you have any good recommendations for a good/cheap tube amp and\or some pedals? Thanks, -Calen.
@CalenCoffman Absolutely. Good pedals, although cheaper than a good amp, will not make a bad amp sound good. I've never played a modeling amp I felt did a really good job for blues.
Thanks Anthony!! You may have already posted this but, if not, could you please give us a rundown on your typical amp settings. I LOVE your tone!!!!!!! I have a Fender Twin Reverb and an American Strat (stock pick-ups) and I'd LOVE to get that tone of yours!
Nice demo. I got a PlimSoul for Christmas and it really has an awesome sound. It's now a favorite over the OCD, but I'm really diggin' the sound of that Wampler. It has a great flavor to it without overshadowing the guitar's natural tone.
I might have to put that one at the top of my list now.
Hi just bought a Fender Blues Junior after watched a lot of your demos of it after a long time, I must say that it is an fantastic little amp! I know it doesn't have anything with this videoto do, but I would just like to thank you doing videos help people with gears and other stuff. You are amazing.
Excellent demo; and better yet explanation. Congrats & Tks!

It sounds to me that the ecstasy would give you much more el macambo-esque tones. which to me is GREAT. I may pick on up soon.

Plimsoul sounds better than I have ever heard it not so gainy and buzzy here. Wampler just rules, also check out Barber.

Hows does the Plim compare to the new FD2? I tried a FD2 twice n hated it each time, blankety.
