@ChorltonBrook, the book's author Arthur Conan Doyle was Irish so I assume there's a reference to Ireland, Dublin or to some the author's character's Irish ancestry( for example the genious evil Moriarty).

It's a bad movie. It can be only good to a person who hasn't read Doyle's Sherlock, ergo a person who know Sherlock's character very little. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

I've read the books but I like how they emphasized the romance a bit more, it's always a good theme to add to a fun movie. Rachel mcadams was so seductive and cunning and played her character very well.

I watched the series of Jeremy Brett many years ago. I still remember that the atmosphere was so serious, and Watson was so flat that I don’t understand why he could be Holmes’coworker.
Many people don’t like this movie because of its Hollywood style. But the first time I saw this movie, I was impressed by the lively old London, the sharp and humorous Watson, and the clever humor of this movie. Wait for the 2nd one.
And there isn’t any love affair b/t RD & JL, definitely.
horrible movie. Ritchie mangled sherlock holmes. I am a huge fan of the books, a great thinking book. This disgusting mess was an 1888 lethal weapon. It dumbed the story down to combine twilight, rambo, and sherlock holmes. It portrayed Watson as a bumbling fool. The original sherlock holmes delt with murders, theft, and treachery. Not undead freaks. Sir Doyle would be spinning in his grave if he saw this movie.

but overall it's very enjoyable. When they were preparing the first stage adapaption of Sherlock Holmes,
Conan Doyle was asked if Sherlock could be married off in it. He told them they could do whatever they wanted with the character. So I doubt he'll be doing any grave-spinning.
I loved this film. I just got 20mins ago & my mind is still blown...heh it even boosted my confidence in life. I now realize I have always had all the "weapons" I need. I will look on filmsi.co.cc for it again.
As an avid reader to the series, I view this movie as another take of Sherlock Holmes. It does not live up to my expectation, but a great take nonetheless and as an individual movie, it deserved at least an Oscar.

Major Holmes fan here. The main problem I had with how they changed things was Irene Adler. I mean, come ON!!! The entire point of the character in "A Scandal in Bohemia" (the only Holmes story she appears in, actually) is that she DOESN'T get caught! Plus, she isn't some...whatever (I couldn't think of a good word for THAT). This movie is a disgrace. Sir Arthur Conan Doyal was probably turning over in his grave when they made this movie.
I don't know what the critics are on about, I think it was a pretty accurate portrayal of Holmes. Except the fact that the character were more dynamic, besides the old portrayals of Watson were incredibly inaccurate.
A dreadful movie.With no understanding whatsoever of its subject matter. Is the world full of blind and ignorant people, who are simply out for a kick, a hit, It matters not at all any aspect of the movie except that it destroys its origin.

sherlock holmes was brilliant suspense but the movie suffers from the name itself. It was great suspense in general but it was clearly expected because it is sherlock holmes. Brilliant work as usual from Guy Richie. Although I still love Snatch most out of his movies.

When I first saw the trailer I was really dissapointed cuz I thought the movie is one of those blockbuster rubbish that come out every day. Considering the fact Im a huge fan of Conan Doyle's books, I was sure this movie was sheer blasphemy! But then I went to see it and I was blown away! it is fantastic! Fast-pace,with clever dialogs,extremely funny! Not to mention Robert Downey Jr's epic performance! I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it!! :)

@nakedmambo Jeremy Brett? Jeremy Brett was too old to play Holmes! When Watson met Holmes in 1881, they were both in their mid twenties. Conan Doyle was born in 1859! The Watsons that had appeared before Jude were so old and fat!!! How could a young man who was in his mid twenties (according to Conan Doyle) turn into an old man? The Jeremy Brett series ruined the two great characters! Jeremy Brett is not the best actor to play Holmes. Watch the Russian series. I doubt he's better than LIvanov!
Maybe you admire Livanov just as much as Brett fans love Brett? Liberty with time is not a real problem, it was after all 'based upon' the stories of Conan Doyle. It just happens to be te performance I appreciate best. Brett gave his all to the part. And to be fair, the original Strand illustrations show a man very much like both Brett and earlier Rathbone.

@nakedmambo Livanov doesn't give Watson hard time all the time like Brett does to his OLD Watson. Also, it is Livanov's picture which is the biggest in the Baker Street Museum. Who got got the OBE from the Queen? As for Watson in that film, it's so disgusting when a young character - a soldier, a good sportsman is ruined by these OLD dudes who keep playing Dr Watson! It's so unfair! I'm glad that Russia showed the world what Dr Watson looked like.

I loved RDJ's Holmes, and Jude's Watson. I love the characterisations. This has to be my fave characterisations of olden day Sherlock Holmes
BBC's modernised Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is my all time favourite. Martin is brilliat and Benedict is just gorgeous.

As an avid reader to the series, I view this movie as another take of Sherlock Holmes. It does not live up to my expectation, but a great take nonetheless and as an individual movie, it deserved at least an Oscar.

This is WoW movie! Very simple story, but totaly different acting, action, fear factor... In my opinion, I think this is a perfectly acceptable romantic comedy. Great story that came up with the idea of friends with benefits :-). Watch it, I am sure thumbs will be up for this. It is at moovi.co.cc!

Everyone, Think of your mental image of Holmes from the books(If you haven't read them, well, you've proven my point). If your mental idea of Holmes is Jeremy Brett, then picture him(not my personal choice, but it works).
Now, can ANYONE in their wildest minds imagine Holmes EVER responding like in this scene from the movie:

Major Holmes fan here. The main problem I had with how they changed things was Irene Adler. I mean, come ON!!! The entire point of the character in "A Scandal in Bohemia" (the only Holmes story she appears in, actually) is that she DOESN'T get caught! Plus, she isn't some...whatever (I couldn't think of a good word for THAT). This movie is a disgrace. Sir Arthur Conan Doyal was probably turning over in his grave when they made this movie.

I don't know what the critics are on about, I think it was a pretty accurate portrayal of Holmes. Except the fact that the character were more dynamic, besides the old portrayals of Watson were incredibly inaccurate.
Love the films, love the books, love everything!

I really like Jude Law. The best American Watson on screen. I'm glad that Russia has shown the world what John Watson looked like. It seems the previous directors didn't read Conan Doyle properly.

sherlock holmes was brilliant suspense but the movie suffers from the name itself. It was great suspense in general but it was clearly expected because it is sherlock holmes. Brilliant work as usual from Guy Richie. Although I still love Snatch most out of his movies.

When I first saw the trailer I was really dissapointed cuz I thought the movie is one of those blockbuster rubbish that come out every day. Considering the fact Im a huge fan of Conan Doyle's books, I was sure this movie was sheer blasphemy! But then I went to see it and I was blown away! it is fantastic! Fast-pace,with clever dialogs,extremely funny! Not to mention Robert Downey Jr's epic performance! I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it!! :)

Downey made a great Holmes and Jude Law gave new life to Watson. Jeremy Brett has not been bettered though, his Holmes is truly one-of-a-kind.

@nakedmambo Jeremy Brett? Jeremy Brett was too old to play Holmes! When Watson met Holmes in 1881, they were both in their mid twenties. Conan Doyle was born in 1859! The Watsons that had appeared before Jude were so old and fat!!! How could a young man who was in his mid twenties (according to Conan Doyle) turn into an old man? The Jeremy Brett series ruined the two great characters! Jeremy Brett is not the best actor to play Holmes. Watch the Russian series. I doubt he's better than LIvanov!

Maybe you admire Livanov just as much as Brett fans love Brett? Liberty with time is not a real problem, it was after all 'based upon' the stories of Conan Doyle. It just happens to be te performance I appreciate best. Brett gave his all to the part. And to be fair, the original Strand illustrations show a man very much like both Brett and earlier Rathbone.

@nakedmambo Livanov doesn't give Watson hard time all the time like Brett does to his OLD Watson. Also, it is Livanov's picture which is the biggest in the Baker Street Museum. Who got got the OBE from the Queen? As for Watson in that film, it's so disgusting when a young character - a soldier, a good sportsman is ruined by these OLD dudes who keep playing Dr Watson! It's so unfair! I'm glad that Russia showed the world what Dr Watson looked like.
