I love the original...the whole premise...its like watching a dramatic play out before our eyes, like some Japanese drama if you've ever seen one of them them. The production value just seems higher to me ....with no corny sound effects, no stupid graphics.
also, Shigekatsu Katsuta > Mark Alan Dacascos (chairman actors)
@starlitecrusader It started in EDO period Japan. Just because the italians got noodles from Ancient China doesn't make pasta a chinese dish. In the same way putting fish on rice isn't a chinese dish either. There is something that is chinese though: It is ramen.
Ahhh...How I have missed you. This show Is and will ALWAYS be AWESOME. I watched this in middle school and it blew my mind! They don't air it anymore and I was soo sad and incredulous at the same time.
I want everybody to know that this is the original Iron Chef and the way that it is playing is the way it was presented on the food network show. I don't know why they got rid of it.
As a renowned culinary artist I must admit that I often watch this show with my jaw agape. The sheer culinary virtuosity and daring audacity displayed by these fine chefs are second to none. I have witnessed these visionary culinary craftsmen conjure dishes within an hour that most men could not possibly dream. What boldness! What creativity! I Bow to you Iron Chefs!
This is the REAL Iron Chef. The Food Netowrk murdered the appeal of the original completely. I never missed The Iron Chef Japan, I cannot stand watching the Iron Chef America and change the channel the instant I see it is on.
Yeah, ICJ had a sushi battle. ICA had a breakfast battle. BREAKFAST BATTLE? The two chefs cooked up dishes that are so basic you can order them all in a local diner in the morning.
@RisingSunRocks for some time at the start of the show Kaga was subtitled. i think he was the only one who was. but then later he was dubbed as well . that was a sad day for me.
@BarbriWarrior this one is a lot better, especially the set. reminds me of the colliseum or some other kind of ancient battle place. but let's be fair, America isn't bad and has it's own stile.
@alexzhu1 The american one is fine as a cooking show, except the shitty beginning where they try to make it funny. But they can't recreate the awesome humor of the original, especially the goofy dubbed version, only dubbed thing I like.
@BarbriWarrior At the very least they need to make it available on DVD. The judge who's a poet is hilarious. Everything reminds him of his childhood. 'This Caesar salad puts forth visions of parents screaming at their offspring, telling them that they'll amount to nothing and then locking them in the closet with only rats as friends...just like when I was a child.' And while English dubbing is traditionally crap, Iron Chef's dubbing has always been quite good.
Iron Chef Japan seems much more technical and time-management esque than the American version. Compare the kitchens, the Japanese set is spread out more-so than the American kitchen. Go ICJ woooo
I remember watching this late at night when i was a teenager! The food they ate blew my mind! It's nice to have an American version... it's not the same, but it's still cool!
the chairman is awesome. what a great idea, he does an intro then just kicks back and gets to try whatever is cooked. doesn't even have to judge, just eat.
He spent his entire fortune on the creation of kitchen stadium. All of the wealth he had acquired in his whole life was spent on the creation of a new medium in which novel gustatory creations would be conjured. He gave away his whole life in dedication to pursuit of new culinary creations. What a hero, what godliness. Engineers of the new culinary form. Smashing the canon of traditional culinary philosophy. What wonder, what guts. I bow in respect to these fine chefs and quiver in awe!
"In some countries, simply displaying what's called 'Japanese food' while maintaining something dramatically different from what you can see as Japanese food can be observed as an increasing phenomenon."
Whatever the criteria, however, the Japanese regard preparation of their cuisine -- which, for the uninitiated, includes far more than sushi -- very seriously.
