@SenorTeco I actually like his face, and think he's a nice guy personally (I played with him in college). I just think his playing is obnoxious, and his music is wicked cheesy.
@WhatTheFlyinFudge I didn't mean I literally hate his face, but yeah, I hate his attitude when he plays. He'll sit around, then play some squeely notes then strike a pose, like "I'm so awesome."
@SenorTeco You should probably educate yourself a bit more on Maynard Ferguson. His "poses" were an energetic follow-through. If you don't like Maynard then you just haven't listened to enough of him. Go back and listen to him in his younger years with the Kenton band, or with the New York Phil, or with the Birdland Dream Band, etc. then maybe you'll realize that he was Maynard "fuckin" Ferguson, and could do whatever he wanted to do (even if he did end up getting cheesy).
Which trumpet/configuration would be best for a lead trumpet roll in a big band? Would getting this trumpet in a brushed finish instead of a silver finish effect the sound a lot?
@drummingtrumpeteer69 The trumpet is quite irrelevant, just a middle of the road horn like a bach will be fine, unless you find something that you like more. The mouthpiece should allow you to produce a bright sound, but most of all be comfortable. What lead playing is about is leading the band, not playing high, or loud, though that is useful. The finish on the horn doesn't matter, unless you have excellent ears, but silver would take less cleaning that brushed raw brass.
I play a VRII large bell trumpet in Cirque du Soleil's 'Viva Elvis' and it is truly the best responding, most in tune and efficient horn I've ever played.
We would like to thank Mr. Nicholson for his candide comments and review of the Stomvi-USA VRII Trumpet.

Lyn is a true high-note player, the only one I've heard with the real Maynard sound.and range. I Wish he performed with the tribute band.
