The newest Mini Maglites have 14 Lumen LED's instead of a bulb. Although I'm sure this trick will still work if you want to install more/less powerfull LED's/bulbs, or even a 100mw+ laser diode as Kipkay mentioned in his project.
@PlainzGenius Yet another person who didn't read the description... There are many tactical uses for a dim light... Didn't anyone ever tell you if you don't have anything nice to say, to shut the fuck up?
@MicrotekMybisi its still useless for realistic use. i did read the description. all you mention is a website, hot to do it, and "This is the simplest way i've found to convert a mini Maglite to LED". thumbs down for you.
note. for this to be brighter (like what people want) you should get a high brightness led with a very narrow viewing angle
@PlainzGenius Did you just say that the Mini Maglite is a good flashlight? LOL
It isn't bright enough at all, pretty dim. It will only give about 8 lumens, and i have a 3 inch flashlight that gives 250 lumens.
It's pretty sweet with a dim light for tactical operations, if you have night vision and uses a red LED to keep the night vision intact, a 3 mm LED will be plenty of light.
Sometimes even more than you need to :) Good video!
@nlty2000 3mm is the diam. of the led... They call for 2 to 3 volts without a resistor, and would be ideally driven on 3 volts with a 150 Ohm resistor. They call for 200 mA Thanks for watching my video!
@MicrotekMybisi i have a couple of duracell 2AA flashlights. i directly put a 3mm led but get a very dim light. is there a way not to put a resistor and get a decent light? i have no idea about how to buy and add resistors. i even don't know what a resistor is, lol!
help me cAn i use rechargeable batteries on my mini maglite the paper says to use alkaline batteries the rechargeable batteries are 1.2 nd there the bunny lol the alkaline are 1.5 also i have a mini maglite w the old bulb today at walmart i got a new one w the new xenon bulb nd a solitare also has the new xenon bulb so yea ^_^
@NFS13EPIC For the best results with xenon, I would use lithium batteries. Energizer makes good rechargables tho it will not be as bright with 2.4 volts.
@NFS13EPIC yes i use energizer metal hydrate rechargables and they are fine with the XENON bulbs but dont use the standard ones that come with the maglite , just replace them first, then use rechargables, i also use the mini maglite but i was thinking of buying a full size xenon torch, they are quite a lot brighter
@MicrotekMybisi Well I think there are a few companies that make upgrades. The best is probably by terraLUX. They make upgrades for differents sizes of maglites, and their mini maglite upgrade is about $32. Expensive, but it boasts 140 lumens of light, far more than an ordinary 3mm diode will give you, and probably more than the new mag-leds. The original incandencent bulb only put out 10 - 15 lumens. Probably worth the money for the upgrade.
@oevzA1oL Just send me 3 bucks to my email (mad river machine at yahoo dot com , all one word ) via Paypal, and I will send you 2 bulbs. Thanks for watching!
@MicrotekMybisi yeah dude, I was pretty upset with the Nitecore's spring coming loose... I had to replace it with a glob of solder, and the light worked fine like that for awhile, but about a month later the light became more of a yellow tint, I think the solder began to burn the emitter out... anywho, I ordered an ITP A3 EOS that I am very happy with. You should check it out, great little 80 lumen LED light for only 20 bucks. =)
dealextreme? Yeah, there is a slick 12 led one on there for $4.78... I just figured someone out there would find this useful. I can't be the only fucker on youtube with random shit lying around...
True, but nice for night use when you want to preserve your natural night vision. Also, just wanted to show the U.V. bulb for more versatility of this amazing host. Thanks for watching!
The factory krypton bulbs suck. They have blind spots and they only last about an hour. Plus the lumen output is about 15. The LED upgrade is only worth it when it increases battery life and output. A tail-cap switch should be standard, but mag-lite isn't just gonna throw surplus units and parts in the trash. I found a light at a junk store for $2. It has a tail-cap switch & 9 LEDs. The output and coverage is about three times that of a krypton AA mag-lite.
They aren't too bright... Great for night use when you want to keep your natural night vision. I use red for reading and such. Green is nice too. When you are camping, it's good to know what's around you and not to be temporarily blinded by your own light source.
I've made some Infra-Red one like that, but I had to drill out the reflector. I used 5mm standard LED's. Only I.R. will work in the Solitare because it's 1.5 volts. Thanks for watching!!
They do. Normally about 2.2 volts. If you could find one that works on 1.5 volts it fit perfect, and work with NO modifications to the reflector. If you find some, let me know! ;-D
I bought one of these today.. And it worked the first time i started it but was acting weird. It didnt work unless the end cap was screwed very lightly on( If you understand my poor english..). After a few times of screwing it on and off it just stopped working. I'm so frustrated now.. :P
2 more questions. 1: Did you notice the very first words you said a the beginning of the video? It sounded like hada hada or somehting like that haha. 2: Are they high intensity LED's, would they be able to light up a trail at night time if you were hiking or something?
"Howdy howdy" (just the South coming out on occasion...) and no, I intended them more for covert night use. Map reading, saving your natural night vision. Thanks for asking!
Ahhh, the rare 2 AAA mini maglite, the 3mm leds work fine (and would look pretty slick) , but if you wanted to use a "regular led" (I assume you mean 5mm) you would have to modify the reflector (Drill it out). Thanks for subscribing!
I had to try it out... Not much brighter, but I would imagine the batteries would last a lot longer. A 150 Ohm resistor would be ideal if you could squeeze it in. Alky batteries strain the diodes pretty hard (on the 3mm) to run them without a resistor would shorten the life of the bulb... Thanks for asking!!

i tried with a 5mm led 2.0v
the light was too dim
it seems the normal maglite is brighter

They call for 200 mA so with 2 AA batterys, you wouldn't want to use it for a long period. Using them as i show in the video is good for making U.V. flash lights or red or green lights for night time use. They don't put out much light, so they save your natural night vision.
Light Output in for 3mm:
Red 5,000 MCD
Green 7000 MCD
Blue 3000 MCD
UV 1000 MCD
