Chances are he didn't sell the Portal Key. He's pretty well known for making Portal Key popular on Arachna in the HoN scene and he can put that item to great use. He probably just TPed out and kept the Portal Key.

If you use an item, you don't get full value back. Once Portal Key is used, the 15s counter goes away.
