@doctordarrow This one was in Vermont (with a van full of Asheville cats). We invented [continuous mix techno contra] dancing to Girl Talk right after making this video.
@VerDeTerre1001 Ah! I see! I don't mean to begrudge anyone their style of music, it's just that the distortions of heavy electronics has always bothered me like nails on chalkboard. One single dance, or even a few of them, coming so late wouldn't upset me at all. Thanks for explaining.
@VerDeTerre1001 I can say with all confidence that everybody dancing here also loves plenty of acoustic contra bands. Elixer played this weekend, and rocked it. This dance was at two in the morning: an addition to the rest of the weekend, not a substitution or subtraction.
I've been contra dancing since 1982, (I was 22), and would love to dance to this music (maybe not all night, but sure for a few dances). I hope more contra dances will add alternative music! By the way, that move at 1:08 where they kiss? That's how I ended up having to have a root canal on my front tooth - so be careful. :-)
This is awesome, I just learned of Contra Dancing tonight (a friend told me about it) but THIS is RIGHTIOUS! Awesom engery in these guys ... great tune! Missing my young days in the club! Where was this?
I don't think this would work in a traditional contra environment. But its cool either way. Might work at my college but not with the contra people I know.
forresto: LOVE this so much. best we could do back in the day - like 20 years ago - was She works Hard for the Money ( at Augusta ) & tracks from Paul Simon's Graceland ( in Cleve Hits).
The dance is "Hay in the Barn" by Chart Gurthrey, one of my favorite dances to end an evening with because it can be done with little or no walkthrough, i's so easy to remember, and as you can see in the video, it gives LOTS of opportunity to improv
Hey in the Barn by Chart Guthrie was used by Kathryn Wedderburn and a hip hop partner for the hip hop contra at Dance Flurry a few years back. That was fun too.
after the friday night dance (midnight-ish)during the 2009 pigtown dance weekend there is a plan afoot to do something like this. although i have never done this before i love the idea of mixing up music and dance styles as well as having a dance that seems so totally dancer-centric. i weary of dancing to contras that do not flow (making it more difficult to improvise) as well as to music that is too fast, has no discernable beat or otherwise does not fit the dance. (have been dancing since '93)
You wild Asheville dancers blew me away when I went to one of your dances while on a trip to the Smokies. I have *never* been at such a creative dance--it was great fun! --Karen from Oklahoma.
holy sheet... GREAT stuff! Nils F. at tonight's greenfield dance mentioned this, and i just had to see it for myself! This is awesome and is so on my radar... where, when does this happen?
Did they block people who were over 27 years old from getting in the door? I'd love to do that but I don't wanna get shot or arrested by the "Contra Police" while trying to enter.
shit is rad. i want this in the pacific northwest

very well made video, also i managed to recognize like half the dancers.
Its amazing how much sexier this video makes the dance look then if you just had the normal contra music for the video.
