What are these 'extreme metal', 'gothic' tags placed on black metal bands thses days ? For people in there 30's like me. Cradle were one of my favourite black metal bands and I was a black metal elitist at the time. We all had to support the handful of bands at the time from uk. With bands like cradle, bal sagoth and hecate enthroned being most popular. They all sounded similar as well.
I was expecting you to say some "Brutal Death Metal" bands. Black Metal song structure 99% of the time is far better than death metal, I'm by no means saying Death Metal song structure is bad but it's really not as complex as Black Metal, I'll send you links

Death Metal is good, Vader is one of my favorite bands of all time. But Black Metal is a much more complex genre than Death Metal, much much more complex. Also Black Metal was around before Death Metal

Those bands have both technical skill and skill in composition.

@hansbananendans Actually when they released TFD and TPoEMF they were a mix of black metal and death metal. In fact a lot of the songs (including this song) came from their death metal days. There's a live concert from 1992 where they were playing this song but instead of shrieking type vocals there were growling vocals.
Just got turned onto COF and black metal in general by a friend of mine. Told me this is their first and heaviest album. It takes some open-mindedness and a lot of warming up to on my part, but god fucking damn... you have appreciate the sheer insane levels of musicianship it takes to play crazy shit like that. Being a newbie bassist, the bass work on this album is particularly fucking amazing. And the drums... precise and blistering to a T. Truly epic stuff.

This is the only CoF album I like right now. I've listen to them until Cruelty and her Beast and been at 2 concerts (1996 /1998). I like this one because keyboards are present but simple, guitar riffs are raw but interesting, and the voice is not bad as in the future.

Better... closer to true Black Metal, even if the vocals are too weak to fit in there perfectly. They are far from Black Metal now. One could never call them 'emo' though... 'gothic' for sure. Gothic and fake.
This is my favorite album - not only from this band -, maybe because it was the first I listened... anyway, it's a great one, and the most aggressive one they made.
Too sad now they're making very bad albums (Godspeed was not too bad though, but soulless I should say).

I agree they're too polished now - the technicality of the nicholas barker/stuart anstis-era was definitely the best - if they combined it with a more Sworn to the Dark (Watain, obvs) production they could still have clarity without being...sugar-coated, which some of it defintiely soudns now.
However - listen to this, and new CoF - the beat changes, over simplified 'melodic' riffs, ... and they were too serious. Altho - Darkly is nice!

Cradle is my favorite band, but they went downhill after Gian and Robin left the band (after Bitter Suites to Succubi). Damnation and a Day was good, but not as good as what came before it. Nymphetamine was sellout crap, although I do like "Gilded Cunt." I'd rather use Thornography as a frisbee or a drink coaster than listen to it. Godspeed was an improvement over Nymphetamine and Thornography, but very mediocre compared to old Cradle, and I expect the new album to be about the same.
Not sure what a CoF song has to do with your little discussion about goth and emo. Im part of the goth culture and CoF are not goth or emo music. They may av gothic elements but not a gothic metal band. CoF are just CoF.

This album has such a gothic atmosphere amazing to combine Black Metal With Gothic Metal it's so dark. I compare this album to Theatres Des Vampires and Black Countess and Moonspell.
Yeah, so this song suggests something I already know about black metal - most of the second wave Norwegian bands wanted to do something different than the "run of the mill" death metal of the time, so they ended up producing stuff that while being rather different from this, resembles it in ambition. Then again, this still hints at the band's death metal past.

People don't realize how fucking awesome COF was back in the day. Principle,Vempire,Dusk,andCruelty were Fucking fantastic albums. I even love Midian. They don't even have an original member except for Dani. You can't even consider them COF anymore.

This is my favorite album - not only from this band -, maybe because it was the first I listened... anyway, it's a great one, and the most aggressive one they made.
Too sad now they're making very bad albums (Godspeed was not too bad though, but soulless I should say).

Also, considering dani isn't homosexual, and as far as I'm aware the rest of the band aren't either, then you can't truthfully say they are 'gay' now. And, I don't see how you claim that Venus Aversa is horrible? It's the best album they've done since the Midian times. I agree they're too polished now - the technicality of the nicholas barker/stuart anstis-era was definitely the best - if they combined it with a more Sworn to the Dark (Watain, obvs) production they could still have clarity without being...sugar-coated, which some of it defintiely soudns now.
However - listen to this, and new CoF - the beat changes, over simplified 'melodic' riffs, ... and they were too serious. Altho - Darkly is nice!

Cradle is my favorite band, but they went downhill after Gian and Robin left the band (after Bitter Suites to Succubi). Damnation and a Day was good, but not as good as what came before it. Nymphetamine was sellout crap, although I do like "Gilded Cunt." I'd rather use Thornography as a frisbee or a drink coaster than listen to it. Godspeed was an improvement over Nymphetamine and Thornography, but very mediocre compared to old Cradle, and I expect the new album to be about the same.

Yeah, so this song suggests something I already know about black metal - most of the second wave Norwegian bands wanted to do something different than the "run of the mill" death metal of the time, so they ended up producing stuff that while being rather different from this, resembles it in ambition. Then again, this still hints at the band's death metal past.

People don't realize how fucking awesome COF was back in the day. Principle,Vempire,Dusk,andCruelty were Fucking fantastic albums. I even love Midian. Now they are the biggest piece of shit out there and I get called a faggot whenever I say the word COF but people don't realize that some of us are true fans of the TRUE cradle, not the bullshit they are today. They don't even have an original member except for Dani. You can't even consider them COF anymore.

I own every Cradle of Filth album, and although their stuff after Midian wasn't AS good, it was acceptable, but Godspeed is a damn good album, a hell of a lot better than Bitter Suites to Succubi.
