People need to understand skin colour is not indicative of a good or bad person, bad deeds/crimes can be commited by either black white, blue or grey. You can. HBO gave him creative freedom, not many other corporations would allow that.
Same with Maher, got fired from ABC got a job at HBO...
And if you're non-conformist it does not mean that you do everything differently than everybody else, that is not possible.
But he had a strong inner voice and took his own paths pretty much..at least that's my impression.
