great video!! I started out my career behind the radio & am now out on the streets everyday but have the utmost respect for the guys and gals taking the calls!!! They do truely get to tell us where to go...lol
dispatchers the 1st, 1st responders the unsung heros, I have been dispatching for 8 years have been on the road on the frount line...its great and so true about the opening statment!!
I didn't go thru all the comments (sorry), but was wondering what the song is. It sounded like Mike Shinoda from either Fort Minor or Linkin Park, but I'm not sure.
Please let me know cuz I loved the song AND the vid!
Sorry don't get it. As a dispatcher for 18 years didn't get to see any of what video showed. As a communications officer/dispatcher you speak to the person in distress, send out the appliances then talk to the crews as they attend till when they leave. The rest is up to my imagination! Considering your trying to show what happens in Comms maybe some of the people behind the radio, phones etc would be more usefull though never as great to look at - sorry.
I did it like this to appeal to a young audience. Understaffing is an issue at many dispatch centers. This video was used at job fairs and people stopped to talk to us when they might have simply passed our booth by without the video. It was created to stimulate an interest in a rewarding career path that many aren't aware of, or never consider. That was the goal of the video.
I am an EMT-B and I have been looking for a dispatching job, but all of the ones that I find say that they want people with experience and I have never been a dispatcher before. Will they hire me if I dont have any experience? Will they train me?
Yes! They will train you! Yes, they will hire you without experience; however, you will have to met certain criteria. Each dispatch center has their own requirements, but the most common are: must be able to type (20-40 wpm is most common), must NOT have a criminal background, must be able to pass a psych test (they want to make sure you are crazy first...hahaha), some departments require you pass a lie detector or voice stress test, etc. Good luck!!!
As a Dispatcher I will never be fully appreciated, I will always be underpaid, and I will deal with enough stress in a year to kill the average person. But I would not trade my job for anything. Its all worth it when I can help a stranger and make their 911 call as comforting and as easy as possible. You haven't experienced anything until you can deliver a baby over the phone and hear the child cry for the first time.
lol okay im not saying your job isnt dedication and hard but i reckon being a riot cop would be sicker getting to boot disorderly people in the face with steel caps :p
:) Thank you...I'm glad you like it. It's my tribute to those who do a thankless job day in and day out. However...we all know we couldn't imagine doing anything else!! So, hats off to the Dispatchers in Philly - Thank YOU for a job well done!! <smile>
It's actually Linkin Park and the X-ecutioners. They rock together. BUT anyway, I have extreme respect for dispatchers. They really are the backbone of public services. I did an intership with a local PD and I got to hang out with the dispatchers for a few days and we had lots of fun.
Thank you...it's good to know dispatchers are appreciated. :) Unfortunately the only time the public hears about us is when we make a mistake. They have no idea what we do, and how often we do it without a single error. Daily there are thousands of us saving lives, and providing help to citizens, law enforcement officers, FireFighters and EMT specialists without a word of thanks. Tell your dispatchers you appreciate them daily!!! <grin>
Of course I included a German photo! Police, Fire, EMS & Dispatching are the same all over the world. The terminology may be different, the tasks might vary, but the heart of the job is the same. :)
At the time, I was simply looking for photos that represented the feeling I wanted to convey. I really wasn't paying too much attention to the age of the photo....and to be honest, I didn't really care what country the photo was from. :) The overall effect of the video, it's ability to convey what dispatchers really do, and attract interest in the field was my main concern. I am glad that you enjoyed it. ;)

True that.

Cops,SWAT and RIOT police are the same thing.

The should show us Answering Calls, talking on the radio, being pissed a citizens, and eating. That is more realistic. And Firefighter is one word.
buzman1985 4 years ago
Are you a dispatcher?
GadgetGirlProduction 4 years ago
Yes I'm a EMD/Fire Dispatcher. If you are a dispatcher you know what the stereotype is. The field thinks all we do is chat and eat all day.
buzman1985 4 years ago
You're not a true dispatcher till you've mastered the art of talking with your mouth full!
Bogart1980 4 years ago
Very true, I have learned to move it to one side and speak as clearly as possible.

It's by a group called The Executioners and it's called (oddly enough) "It's going down". :)

But this photo was shot in times when we were not wearing modern fire protection suits yet.
