  • Thank You For this!!!!

  • Ive lived in Tujunga for 26yrs. I honestly just wish it was still like in these photos. the monte vista tavern looks amazing!

  • @StockingsTube

glad you liked it. I remember playing in that building (after it had been abandoned, and before it was razed)...it was about a block away from Sunland Park.

Things sure aren't the way they used to be!

  • I Live in Tujunga now not to far from Commerce and WOW I wish I lived here when it looked like that ! I honestly hate this town because its such a crap hole now. Its amazing how much of a difference there is from this video and the present. All filled with tweakers and bums now. Its really sad..

  • What song is this?

  • @AwarenessCosmic

This Old Town by Chip Taylor.

It'scredited at the end of the video...

  • Verdugo class of 98!

  • Ah, memories. Excellent job!

  • Good job @ 1:01, where would that be. Crazy it snowed! 1951?

Geographically the area is very beautiful! But something has happened here over the decades. It went downhill fast. Every kid I know who went to Verdugo said it SUCKED. Any more info on this? Also, driving here is annoying, mostly because all the streets are destroyed, and speed bumps are getting added everywhere. I wished I could move to LaCrescenta

  • Thanks for your comments.

The area shown at 1:01 is Foothill Bl., at Commerce Ave. facing east. Where the Texaco station was, is now a used car lot.

  • Yeah I see it now! Wow. Very cool. The golden age for Tujunga. You know this place would improve a lot if they just fixed the streets. But, that unfortunately will not happen. It's just pretty sad when you're going down Wentworth, or Hillrose and your car is banging off the ruts and cracks. Kyle Street between Plainview and Mt. Gleason has got to be top 5 worst street in Tujunga. And it's been that way for 30 years. Anyhoo, great job on the vid!

  • @tujungite I lived in Tujunga in the 1950's and 60's. Graduated from Verdugo 1965. It was a good school from what I recall. Lived on Mt. Gleason, Wentworth, Kyle, then back to Wentworth. I remember the Tujunga Theater... 35 cent admission....next to Foster's Freeze....the swings at Sunland Park after cruising Van Nuys Blvd.....Sunland Park pool....Tujunga Canyon on hot summer days-jumping off the big rocks into the water.... those were the days....the drive-in theater...good memories

  • @JoanieMcC Oh nice! yeah those must have been the days. There is a reason why this area was the weekend getaway spot for the richies way back. Like I said, geographically, the area is stunningly beautiful. Yeah I saw Rambo and Beetlejuice at that theater for 2 bucks I think.haha. yeah Monkey Canyon, done that a couple times. The Crest is largely closed now I believe, from the Station Fire. Integration has full time police presence at Verdugo. I will move before my kids have to go there.

  • It snowed in December 1949. My parents lived in Sunland and I was born during the snow storm. We lived in S-T until the early 70s. Loved the area. LaCrescenta and eastward is a little nicer but S-T still has it's charm.....in the spring when there's been lots of rain. The only time I really didn't like it was in August.

  • Oh you have done a remarkable job. What an honor to have our little towns represented this way. We are proud of your hard work on this video. Good Air Quality in these towns probably encouraged you too....

  • thank you for your kind words...

  • Excellent job!!! I liked the pictures of the buldings as they aged and went through remodels. Makes me homesick for a place that is gone.

  • Tujunga used to be run by Hell's Angel's. And Sunlad was a bunch of Skin-Head's, that's why they don't like any race. Also, I must agree, that Armenians do have the most well kept and maintained houses/apt's in ST. I can tell which house is Armenian just by looking at the lawn and the drive way.

  • And how long have you been there? I lived there for 49 years and Tujunga was a great place to live in the 60s whole area has gone down hill. That's why I left two years ago. Don't clump all into one negative generalization... You are misinformed.

  • I love this town, and btw, I'm Armenian and agree with Robles how glendale used to be a nice city. The real problem is that the Armo's in glendale aren't what Armenian's are suppose to be. Armenian's are chill, very respectful and understanding. The Armenian's we see around us are people who watch tv or listen to rap and believe that this is how they should act. Go meet a 40 yr old armo f.o.b., and he'll be completely different then what you usually see, I know, I just got back from Armenia.

  • Amazing photography that was shot in my home town.

  • Great Job!

  • I went to Mt. View, Mount Gleason, and Verdugo Hills. I could not wait to get out of that town 25 years ago. I don't ever want to go there again.

  • Good...Sunland-Tujunga needs less people like you around.

  • cant we all just get along ????

  • Yeah, we're jealous we're not as rude, inconsiderate, obnoxious and pushy as you Armos. I am old enough to remember what an absolutely beautiful city Glendale used to be before you bastards started pouring in. Armos ruined it, just like they ruin every place they colonize. Did anyone ask you to come here? No, but I'll bet plenty would like to see every one of you go back the hell where you came from. Get out of our country.

  • @CrispinRobles

EVERYONE, PLEASE VOTE THUMBS DOWN ON THIS RACIST AND ANTI-COMMUNITY COMMENT.

LET'S GET IT OFF THE "TOP COMMENTS" LIST!

WE WERE ALL IMMIGRANTS AT SOME POINT.

  • @DataRelater

Why are you using all caps? Is screaming the only way you can get your point across? You are quite an ignoramus. Who are the "we' in your statement about all of us being immigrants at some point? I was never an immigrant anywhere at anytime. Most of the people I know are not nor have they ever been immigrants in this country or any other country. Perhaps we should all vote thumbs up to keep idiots like you from making stupid, uninformed comments on this thread. You're a moron.

  • @CrispinRobles

Ah, pues, Señor Robles. Me alegro que su familia vivía aquí en los EEUU cuando se formaron las primeras rocas y antes de los árboles.

Que lástima, la mía, no. Llegamos por nave. Así, todos somos imigrantes "at some point."

    Claro, menos los búfalos.

Por eso, juzgo cada persona, persona por persona. No me imorta si vienen de Armenia, Irán o dondequiera.

    Paz.

  • I understand that every race has its bad elements..but you can't seriously tell me that the rampant materialism and introverted ethnocentrism from the Armenians is worse than the the rest of them...tweakers (whites), the hispanic population that doesn't seen to care about where they live, and are intent on turning everywhere they go into a mirror image of their own garbage nation...I just don't understand why all you white people it ST don't like Armenians, are you jealous? is that it?

  • My grandparents settled in Tujunga in the 20's, and remained there until their deaths in the 70's. As such, Tujunga is forever part of my family heritage and lore. Excellent little video and great choice of music. Thanks for taking the time to make it.

  • I love this video and song. Thank you so much for making it. I was raised in Tujunga, it will always be home to me. So many memorie's I moved to Washington state in 1981, I need to put my feet back on Tujunga soil soon. There is no other place like it for me in this big world of ours. Again I thank you for making this video! From tujungagal

  • ay WILLSPIRES save ur stupid comments bout tujunga its the best place to live in LA county no traffic fresh air and away from the lame ass city people like what u think u are. fucken lame ass is all about tujunga aint another one like it

  • crispinrobles you are very gay lol oldy

  • I lived in S-T from the late 50's though the mid 80s , I live in Northern Calif now and still go back every now and again. It is not the same old S-T, but it will always be home to me. It was a great place to grow up..My Dad was the store Manager at the Shopping Bag on Foothill. We used to see how many people we could fit in the trunk and get into the drive in without paying. My girlfriend at the time worked at Bob's , and we met again after 25 years and we are dating again. love never dies

  • P.s. wish we had some of those things they did have still

  • How it has changed soooo soo much. Amazing! =)

  • nice video, it's great to see that Sunland Tujunga had its good times in history =)

  • yes, I also grew up in tujunga,.1960`s early 70`s

I now live in AZ,. everytime, I go thru S/T I cant wait to get out,. the canyon is ruined,. I could not live there ever again,.,.

     mike h.

    from tujunga,.

  • And it's not just weekend visitors that have done the ruining. The DWP went up and down The Canyon, capping every source of water they could..

  • How anyone could be sentimental about Tujunga escapes me entirely. Grew up there, left as soon as I could. What a pit.

  • Thank you....

VHHS 83 Alumni(where I learned how to pronounce Tujunga)

  • Thanks WalldogX for this great video. I really appriate the clips and the history of this town.

  • Bill, I was in the same class as your brother, John. We used to have a special small pencil named after him, the "mogie pencil." I was in your house on Apperson.

Been away a long time now but it was a great place to grow up

  • i love my hometown!! GO DONSS!!!<3

  • true dat

  • I was raised in S/T, went to Pinewood Elem., Plainview Elem, Mt. Gleason JH & graduated from Verdugo in 1970. My last visit in 2000 was depressing, very seedy, steel bars everywhere. Nice to see the older days, as well as the memory-joggers of the Shopping Bag & Ad Mart... made me feel sad & nostalgic for a moment. Thank you for making this!

  • I'm glad someone has good memories of this ole town ;). Thanks for a nice stroll!

  • Good job indeed, brings back good times to mind

  • missin' my home town here in tx!!!

    xoxox

    tear in my eye,

    skinny

  • I too am now in Texas , and miss home in Tujunga.49 years there. 1958-2008. Has changed much and not for the good. But will always be Home !

  • A few years back, some Jenny-come-lately on the Chamber of Commerce(a real estate agent,I believe)complained that,"People in Sunland-Tujunga seem content to live in a little hick town!"Well,DUUUUH!..That WAS it's big charm you stupid dummyhead. And Walldogx understands. S-T has become too much like the Valley(which S-T never belonged to or in).Long live this little hick town. And thanx Walldogx, you've done a damn good job.

  • wOw! I really appreciate that glimpse back in time. My parents and grandparents moved from Oregon to Sunland about 1940. My dad got a job building the dam and more family moved there. We were living on Oswego St in Sunland when I was born. I went to Sunland Elem, Mt Gleason & VHHS, as did all my brothers and sisters. Growing up there was great - Sunland Park, Drive-In theater, McGrority Park,Taco Tio, Big Tujunga Canyon...wish I had never left 30 years ago.

  • What beautiful memories this video evoked, and the music is perfect for it. I lived at 10751 Nassau and 8216 Jayseel Street. Graduated VHHS in 1967. Used to practically live in the canyon. Too bad so many damned Armenians have moved in. They're a destructive force. Thanks for the memories.

  • Thanks Leonard (greg or ?)

  • Please explain how Armenians are a destructive force in Sunland Tujunga. The last time I checked, Armenian homes in the ST area are the most well kept and manicured, Armenian owned businesses are growing up and down Foothill, the renovation on commerce..majority of the businesses are Armenian owned...VHHS awards 8-15 valedictorian honors every year, and every year at least half are Armenian students. You just sound like a jealous old bigot. How do you like the church off of the 210 lowell exit:)

  • Armenians are the single greatest source of crime in Glendale. Even without the crime, Armenians are the most obnoxious people on earth, but if you're an Armo, you won't get it. I'm telling you how everyone else sees Armenians, and Armos are not liked at all. People won't say it to your face, but nobody, and I mean nobody, likes Armenians. They are universally despised, and the politicians or bureaucrats that let them immigrate to this country should be dragged into the street and shot.

  • I've had a few realizations recently. First of all, I completely understand why everyone despises us. I accept it. It's a free country, and if you have the fortitude to do something about it, go right ahead. I will also say that we feel the same about you. We hate all of you just as much as you hate us. This country, however, is a country governed by law, and not human weaknesses such as hate. Our population and education level keeps climbing, yours keeps declining, I would be scared too.

  • Oh an you somehow know exactly how everybody feels about a certain group of people? I think that its you and your sad circle of pathetic ingrate friends and family that don't like Armenians. To be honest with you, I could care less about your racist perceptions. I am Armenian, and I have no problem with any other race, and I work in a racially diverse environment, doing things you wouldn't even comprehend because the world has moved past old, tired, sorry bigots like you. You fucking mutt.

  • Armenians are caucasion, last time I checked. You're teetering toward Godwin's Law with your charges of racism. Better scroll down and see what you had to say about Mexicans, you fucking hypocrite. I'll bet you do things I wouldn't even comprehend. Like welfare fraud maybe?

  • Thank you so much. I was raised in Sunland- Tujunga. Graduated from Verdugo in 1960. Left in '75. What great memories. Foster's Freeze was our hang out. Crusing Foothill Blvd. was our recreation on the weekends. Making out in Tujunga Canyon. Lol What a walk down memory lane.

  • That was amazing I love it! I've lived here my whole life [14 years lol] my mom grew up here too and still owns the house she grew up in. I never knew Sunland, tujunga has been around this long. I wish there weren't as many strip malls, and that they wouldn't put in that Home Depot on foothill blvd!! I say we should have a protest but that probably wouldn't stop them.

  • and rather put a bowling alley in there or a bobs big boy like there used to be where the cocos is now..

  • 1968 Pinewood, Gleason, & VHHS. Ready to move to another small town w/ a 2 lane road, 1 stop light, a drive-in. Never should of sold Edwards, the Rainbow or messed up our lakes in LVT. 210 fwy was the biggest mistake ever, we have too much traffic, buses that don't carry local children to school, too many outsiders w/ businesses in this town that don't support the local schools or clubs. I miss going into businesses & finding out the local news or reading "Susie Says" in the Record-Ledger.

  • Most excellent! Somebody outta pay you to do this!

  • I love looking at those buildings! Lived in Sunland Tujunga from 1947 and graduated in 1959. Still keep in touch with friends from school and love it. Great memories, thanks!

  • Wow Rainbow Theater, went to verdugo 1983-1986 awesome video good to see Tujunga again. Live in Pittsburgh for last 18 years little more snow here.

  • awesome, thanks for sharing--i've lived nearly my whole life (coming on 35 years) in S-T, the best little unincorporated slice of LA City you can ask for.

  • Sorry, it was once unincorporated, but has not been for many years.

  • Bad verbiage on my part...what I meant was that we're officially City of LA even though we're not physically connected to downtown. Anyway, thanks for responding :)

  • Wow. I'm so impressed. I grew up there, 8444 Day St., Sunland School, VHHS. I was just up there last night for a reunion planning meeting for the decades of the 50s. Love this town. Thanks so much.

  • I sure hope they have another 50's reunion! I was at the last one.

  • fam moved to area in 56.i still live in the home i grew up in--actual site of olive factory. sibs and i atttended all area schools. hubs fam moved here in 1910...owned land and vineyard n&e of tuj can blvd, as well as arco on mcvine and foothill for years. thanks for sharing video!!

  • Thanks so much for such a great nostalgia experience. I came to Tujunga as a toddler in 1941, went to Plainview Ave. elementary and left after the 10th grade at Verdugo in 1954. I have nothing but great memories of a wonderful childhood there. And I vividly remember the snowstorm of 1949 shown in some of the photos.

  • Wow this was AWESOME!! I have lived and grown up out here. I live in shadow hills and I am 18. It was nice seeing how verdugo high looked in its early years and to see commerce such a known street the way it was WAYY before I was born. Great video thanks for posting this!

  • I glad you enjoyed it. I've lived here since the early fifties...went to all the local schools (apperson, Mt. Gleason, Verdugo Hills - Graduated 1967)...and I still live in the area.

Please tell me more about yourself, did you attend VHHS?

  • Oh my God I cant believe it!!! You have brought back wonderful memories of a childhood spent in the most beautiful little town no one ever heard of. I am a native of Sunland but moved away 20 years ago. The Sunland of my youth is in those photos, thankyou for sharing them.
