I am amazed at the self-involved idiots that patrol youtube looking for a place to stroke themselves. I am a new player (short of a years now). I took a lot away from your posting. I absolutely agree with your theory that is is just about playing the freaking guitar, not applying Quantum Physics. I've had one instructor that taught me that. "if you find it (the cord) and it sounds good... play it!"I'm getting the book next payday! Keep on posting my friend.
Dino - I took a lot away from the video and I've been playing 30 years. Jazz is a recent thing with me. Would it have helped to know the tune was essentially a ii-V-I-IV in Bb Major with a ii-V-I in G minor (the relative minor) tacked on the end? For some probably. I took the initiative to figure it out rather than complaining. It's a shame to see the pointless critical comments from those with nothing better to do. Keep up the well intentioned efforts.
Thanks! There are plenty of people providing the same old information on ii-V-I and so on. I just happen not to find that approach interesting, but not that useful in practice. I try to provide something different and personal... not everyone will agree but then I am not trying to please everyone. These days when someone annoys me too much I ban them, which is why we will not be hearing from Mr. Bald Headed "2-5-1" anymore :)
Do you suppose you could post a complete performance of Autumn Leaves using your arrangement? Those I've been able to find online are usually in a different key and "jazzed up" to the point that the basic structure of the song is essentially concealed.
a typo?! Ha. its cool. you accidently hit the I in front of the V, those buttons are right next to each other.Yeah people intend to do that often. I'm sorry. I can tell your getting a little irritated. Cause I'm pointing out this shit that your forgetting. Hey man. I'm only 26 years old, I've only been studying jazz for about 3 years. I'm a beginner at this type of style. I'm just trying to give you advice about giving better lessons on the youtube! You British people are fuckin hilarious!!!
2-4-1 progression? 2-5-1!! you want to learn these chords to play this style of music. and in order to play this style of music, i think you might want to learn the progression. and not just these chords and dick around with them. if you do that yer not playing music. yer just playing these chords. am i right? and i dont think a 2-4-1 would sound good on anything. maybe a 2-5-4?
BTW you are also a fool if you think that people cannot make music by experimenting with chords. Check out my "The Guessing Game" composition. It is quite complex, and I wrote it without theory, just by ear. Because music is not about intellectualising chord progressions. It is about playing and listening.
"Dont criticize what i dont understand?" What dont i understand? I'm talking bout the people that DONT understand!!! Yer like, " See this triangle shape!" Look at this Minor shape and just move your finger down and you got a major 7 chord." I feel sorry for your students.
You think it is necessary do understand what a II-IV-I progression means before being allowed to play a chord? You know, there is another way of playing music, using ears and experimenting. Check out my video on the death of musical education if you want to understand. I feel sorry for your students.
my money back? man, i myself know all that. i'm saying for those who dont know all this. you should've been explaining about the progession you 2-5-1 in Bb major and 2-5-1 in G minor and take it from there. nevermind.
man, i'm sorry. that was the worst "instructional" video i've seen yet. you should've talked about the chord progressions and why each chord falls into place like they do. instead, "oh, i dont know what that is." or, " i forgot what that was." you should have at least explained why the major 7 is a called maj 7. why the min 7 is min7....etc...sorry...
you are missing the point entirely. Explain why a major 7 is called major 7? I can do that, I wrote most of the wikipedia article on chord naming conventions. This video is about chords and finger patterns... a way of linking the patterns together to help remember them. If you want the names of the chords, try the description. You are also quite rude. I suppose you want your money back? Or does my teaching style threaten your view of the world in some way? Probably.
Forget baldhead, hes obviously an idiot. Back to music.......
Theres a VERY nice program called 'SCALA' by Manuel op de coup. Its got all these crazy sub programs with variations of music theory, triangle patterns, maths concepts. Its FREE.
I've bloody lost it but from the site I managed to get about 30 pages of scales. Eastern, western u name it, TONS of scales.
I love scales so crossed referenced the western ones and they've come up trumps. All correct.
@dndn1011 Actually it's funny isn't it how when you check out the page of a critical poster, they almost always never have a single video posted of their own.
go to TABABUNGA . COM you will find video guitar tabs with the tablature to each song, anyone can join its free , join up and upload your own videos and tabs, TABABUNGA THE YOUTUBE OF GUITARISTS
Anyway, allow me to tip my hat off to thee for creating some of the best series in the history of gaming and let me apologize for momentarily derailing your video thread.
dude, you should've stuck with making videogames, the industry is in desperate need of brilliant people like you and Jon Hare because the overall quality has long since gone downhill.
I got a PS3 and an X360, notwithstanding I've been playing Sensible Soccer and Kick Off 2 more often than any other allegedly "next-gen" football sim as of late and I honestly find them several orders of magnitude better, gameplay wise, than those surrogate counterparts of a footie game characterized by overly (and oftentimes unnecessarily) convoluted controls and whose visuals are plagued by a disturbingly uncannyvallyic after-taste that go by the names of "FIFA 09" or "PES/Winning Eleven 2009"
I wish I had found a video like this years ago. I play in a 7 piece variety party band and we play a lot of jazz standards during our dinner set, all real book charts. This video could have saved me a lot of grief and time. Great Job!
Ever try playing a 13th chord with your thumb over the top on the root? It's easier for me.
I rarely use the thumb like that, I don't like the way I have to change my hand position to do it... but it works for many people. Thanks for the comment!
wow, im a beginer jazz player, i usually play alternative rock, ska stuff and this video is a great way to find typical jazz chords and what there names are, thank you very much for this helpful video, nice one!
and that one chord that you start off the song with is a, AM7 and i like how you added the F# on the high E string, great chord. that makes it an AM7 add13. i never thought about doing that... so good!
really great explination actually, the only thing is.... when you play a minor ii V I the V is usually an altered dom. you probably knew that but, i just felt like saying it because you used the "cowboy chord" hehe.
you've got an awesome way of explaining.
also one more thing, if you take that half dim shape and move the 3 notes up a fret while keeping the note on the d string you will have a M7. its one of my favorites!
You should get hold of a chord book. Tab is not really good for Jazz Guitar, as it is too restricting. You get chord symbols... part of the process of learning this stuff is getting to know the chords and how they are called... and the fingerings.
Dino, is that second track something you wrote? It's got a nice free sound. I was playing around the other day that tune came into my head. I couldn't remember a one of the changes so I came back to check out the video. Funny how this youtube stuff sticks in your head.
If you're looking for a voicing for that Am7(b5), try A G C Eb, with your A on the 5th fret of the low E, your G two strings under it, your C one sting under that, and finally the Eb is the 4th fret of the B string.. but I also like that higher one you are using.. this one is just good if your solo and want to keep all those bass notes.

@KrisShred When I say I cannot have sex without love, or my feelings of love are based on your giving me the feeling you are pure hearted and if that is an illusion so is my love to you - I MEAN IT.
My love to you, I'm afraid - was based on the ILLUSION that you are pure hearted.
Time to wake up from my little fantasy world and look truth in the eyes.
fantastic video..I am a classical pianist and went to college to learn the Jazz component and boy did I get flustered with it...all about improvisation and talent versus technical I think...I was technical..not talented unfortunately..could not let go and feel the music...hugs
Just play, never think too much about it. Music education has a lot to answer for. Music is supposed to be from the soul, not studied and disected with a science! :)
Thanks very much my friend for the great video. I already know some of the chords already :) However there are some I have to learn. Just downloaded the video therefore. Love these chords, they sound wonderful. Especially if you have enough of usual minor or major chords :D Thanks for the guitar lesson,
I play by ear too... for lead. I have not managed to play chords by ear yet. That is much harder I find. But it is improving with practice! I only want to play by ear :) One day :) :)
Very neat. I think this is a good forum for showing other players some of the structure and patterns that are useful when jamming with others. And drinking of course...lol..very good lesson you have a lot of passion for teaching and appear to be good at it...enjoy the day :)

If you're looking for a voicing for that Am7(b5), try A G C Eb, with your A on the 5th fret of the low E, your G two strings under it, your C one sting under that, and finally the Eb is the 4th fret of the B string.. but I also like that higher one you are using.. this one is just good if your solo and want to keep all those bass notes.

dndn1011 4 years ago
Just recognized.. that's like a major seven chord, but with the '2' on the small e string.
Major7 chords I can play well, but the major13 is hard to do :/ (need a strong little finger for that one, aint ya?)
KrisShred 4 years ago
Yes, that one in the video is cheating because it is not a movable shape, although you can always try rootless voicings (esp. if there is a bass in the arrangement).
dndn1011 4 years ago
Yeah, rootless chords are more easy ;)) However I want to be able to play the maj13 chord with the root bass also.. Maybe jazz means cheating? ;D
KrisShred 4 years ago
Time for a study of maj13 chords :)
dndn1011 4 years ago
Gmaj13 : you can drop the 5th, this gives you:
3-x-4-4-5-x
Voicing for root on 5th string (Cmaj13) is:
x-3-5-4-5-5 (barre with little finger) - This is not easy or confortable. You can again drop the 5th though:
x-3-x-4-5-5 (barre with 3rd finger)

Especially if you have enough of usual minor or major chords :D Thanks for the guitar lesson,
Kris

I play by ear too... for lead. I have not managed to play chords by ear yet. That is much harder I find. But it is improving with practice! I only want to play by ear :) One day :) :)

Very neat. I think this is a good forum for showing other players some of the structure and patterns that are useful when jamming with others. And drinking of course...lol..very good lesson you have a lot of passion for teaching and appear to be good at it...enjoy the day :)
