BLESS YOU for putting this up! I have been trying to find that clip of the two boys running with the gate closing behind them for years! That has stayed with me since I was 9 years old back in the 70's. Thanks so much!!
Thanks for putting the video of these promos up. Does anyone out there know the particular tune from the second promo (which was my favorite) and who recorded it? I have had this tune in my head for at least 35 years. I vividly remember these promos being played during "Patchwork Family" and I'm sure other local WCBS-TV productions. Thanks!
Anyone remember those commercials for the Circle Line and the Day Line. They were always on late night TV along with the Lenny's Clam Bar commercial that had Rocky Graziano in it..."mention my name and you get a glass of wine on the house".
These were the sounds of New York and New Jersey in the early Seventies; to hear them again today leaves a great feeling, and recalls cherished moments in time...
Thanks ever so much! I'd never though 'd see this again! That Cloisters piece has haunted me years, and I always wanted to know what the name of that song was- now I know!
The "WCBS Celebrates New Jersey" clip starting at :42 uses Duncan Lamont - "Wah Wah Blues" KPM-1164 "Loony Tunes" circa 1975 as the music bed. However, the track is HIGHLY pitched up!!! I was able to re-create the pitch with Cool Edit no problem!
omg i got chills on the last video with those people running in central park,i think thats where that was shot, and i do believe john scott was playing the flute in that wonderful musical score, this is a treasure for sure, tyvm for posting this gem ;-)
Thank you for posting this memory classic. I was a kid in the 70’s NYC; my parents would let me watch CBS Late Show on weekends. When the Cloisters (last one) promo would come on, I was mesmerized, because it was haunting. The music, the meaning of those people running, the Cloisters, Spring. This image and song stayed with me all my life. Really brings back memories, I am shocked so many other people even know about this. Life was so good, and I did not even realize it back then. Great post.
Thanks for finding that "jazzy" version of WCBS Celebrates New York promo series. I love it! Now, does anyone know whatever happened to the mid-1970's closing theme song to the TODAY show? It was posted for awhile but disappeared. I think it was written by a composer named Ray Ellis, or something like that? The song was real Jazz!
One of the c.1971-72 "WCBS-TV Celebrates New York" ads which were not included in this set featured music that was in a late 1970's ad promoting Miami Beach as heard during the 3:36 - 4:06 mark in:
As well, West Coast-based 'KLXT77' put up some portions of the tail end of WCBS's broadcast day of March 20-21, 1978, where another "WCBS-TV Celebrates New York" promo of a minute's length and using Keith Mansfield's KPM library piece "Pop Package" is featured, as seen from 4:46 to 5:45 on:
watch?v=I6_RnTmMccw
And to 'TiVolsGod' and 'brmnyc': It looks like that was indeed the GWB at night, at the end of that promo.
I remember 2 other ones with different music. One of only the cloister gate closing and slower paced music (that one has stuck with me since and I don't know why) and one of the GW - or maybe the Williamsburg bridge - at night.
@TiVoIsGod I am looking for that one too. I seem to recall the Cloisters one where the gate swings out and open with two boys running thru and then swings shut behind them. If anyone has that clip, I'd be in heaven just about now.
I've been searching for these promos forever. The Cloisters intro is so beautiful. But where is that really up-tempo jazzy one that ends with a night shot of the George Washington Bridge? Thank you for posting this!
@brmnyc - As I mentioned, that "up-tempo jazzy one" with the ending shot of the GWB at night consisted of Keith Mansfield's "Pop Package," and can be seen at the times mentioned on:
The "WCBS-TV Celebrates New York" spots were made around 1971-72 (not just the music, but the Avant Garde Medium typeface used for the overlay). The Jersey promos were around 1977-78.
You are exactly right, wmbrown6. I can confirm that the "WCBS-TV Celebrates New York" spots started airing during the 1971-72 season, because I was in the 9th grade at the time, and it was the same season that the Prime-Time Access Rule went into effect, reducing network prime-time programming on weeknights from three-and-a-half to three hours, and ushering in a slew of mostly dismal syndicated fare, with one notable exception: A weekly half-hour version of The Golddiggers.
Like many others, that music has haunted me since about 1975-76! I clearly remember that promo with the Circle Line AND the Cloisters one and liking the music before I'd visited either.
The name of the music bed at the beginning and end of the promo is called "Roses Today" by Johnny Scott and is available on a CD compilation called "Music for TV Dinners: The 60's" This song haunted me for 35+ years because of this promo! RSG2006 made an execellent inquirey about another music bed that was used. I would also like to know what the name of that "Wah-Wah with the Trumpet" music bed was!
mdallen67, I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am to you. Like you, I've wanted to know what that piece of music was since I first heard it, which was as a teenager, circa 1972. I thought that it would surely remain a mystery to me for the rest of my life, but thanks to you, I now not only know what it is but how and where I can obtain a pristine copy of it,
No sooner did I read your message than I went and placed an order "Music for TV Dinners: The 60's". You have my eternal thanks, but what you really deserve is a commission! As for the "Wah-Wah Trumpet" music bed, I'm fairly certain that I know the piece to which you're referring, but unfortunately, I don't know the name of it. If it is indeed the same music that I'm thinking of, then my recollection of the spot on which it was used featured children at play on the streets of NY.
I heard that song on an in-store music system about 15 years ago, so my guess is that it's not production music, but rather, a commercially released recording. I've searched for it in the past without success, but you've given me reason anew to try again. I feel really indebted to you for the information about "Roses Today", so if there is any other similar piece of music for which YOU'VE been hunting for years, let me know -- I might know the answer.
So funny, another user posted that last spot in a compilation video and someone mentioned in the comments that the music was Johnny Scott, when I read it I posted a comment almost identical to yours, how grateful I was to not only hear it again after all these years but to also learn the name of it and get a copy...strange how many people are aware of such an obscure piece, all these years I figured I was the only one.
I too would like to hear that "Wah-Wah with the Trumpet" music bed that you refer to,that is if we're talking about the same piece of music...if you're interested I could email you a short mp3 of me playing a few seconds of the piece I'm thinking of on my keyboard from memory,if it's not the same piece you're referring to perhaps you might recognize it and know the name of it...I have a friend about my age who'd REALLY love to hear it again.
There was another music bed in the "Celebrates New York" series, I think it was with kids playing in the streets, but it was in 7/4 time (the tempo roughly same as the theme from "The Name of the Game"), in the key of D minor, and ended with an organ flourish whose sound was similar to that of the organ during the instrumental break of The Casinos' 1967 hit "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye." Hope this doesn't wrack your brain too much.
I think that we're likely referring to the same bed,the one I'm thinking of has a similar organ sound to the Casinos record although as I remember it wasn't 7/4 and was major rather than minor.I had sent an mp3 of a quick recreation I did from memory to mdallen67 and he confirmed it was the same bed he remembered.Interestingly,I played it in G originaly but after seeing your post I tried it in D and it sounds more like the original. If you like I can send you an mp3 to see if it's the same one
This is nothing short of amazing! I have yearned to again see the "WCBS-TV Celebrates NY" spots that you have featured at the beginning and end of this collection for at least 25 years! I had searched YouTube in vain! I had even called WCBS as far back as 18 years ago, and never received a satisfactory reply. I thought it was hopeless! All I can say is: THANK YOU SO MUCH! One question: Do you have any idea what that piece of music is on those first & last spots? Any help would be appreciated
Greatly enjoy these clips. Do you have any more from this series? I recall at least one other...the music was a mod kinda tune with trumpets (doing a "wah" effect that trumpet players sometimes do with the mute device.)
Thank you for re-posting this video. I went on vacation in August and when I returned, I was disappointed to see it removed. I now understand what happened. It's my favorite, especially the last one, which I remember was shown at sign in early in the morning. It has so much class and is a contrast to what we see today. Thanks again for bring it back. I am totally enjoying it.
Would you believe I still recall the tunes on these from my Saturday Morning "Patchwork Family" watching days as an 8-yr old? Remember the "Mike Makes My Day"
Mike Douglas promos? Or the ones for The Bobby Vinton Show? Good grief...!
He's not back, although some of his videos are appearing again. They are from many users who probably either downloaded his videos of aquired copies of his tapes via trade.
Do you have WCBS news intros & promos from the years 1973-75? The only things that WCBS had clips before 1976 were the Robert Trout intro in 1965 & the Bob Dylan "Rolling Thunder" piece from December 1975. I know the other earlier clip from WCBS news in the 70's was a Vic Miles weekend intro in 1976.
Unfortunately, I do not have anything from WCBS from 73-75. I got this video from a former YouTube user who closed his account because he was flooded with trade requests. If he comes back to YouTube or some other video site, I will ask him about that.
@x60hz Although your comment is 4 years old, I just came across it and had to reply. I remember these too, especially while watching WCBS Channel 2 late at night. Back then I lived in the Bronx and there was a White Castle nearby and I associate these commercials with eating them late night while watching the tube. I always loved Picture For A Sunday Afternoon and have searched for someone else who remembered those great movies.

As for Lenny's if you look around here, it's on some of the early 80s NYC blocks. I wish I had an exact location for you.
