  • Eat your heart out Charlie Rich!

  • still remains a touching piece of work. It is true "living and dying ARE our most intimate friends.." I just last week heard an expert say what an honor it is to be with someone during this time and how it is good not to leave the dying alone.... may God bless John Denver.

  • I was the carer for my disabled aunt who died a month ago.She came to live with mum & my sis and me when our nan died when I was six.I grew up & left home, then when mum died 6 years ago, came home to look after her.Dad had taken off when we were kids,so when she died,it was a huge blow for me & sis.The 2 people who loved us the most in the world are gone.As much as i miss her,I know she missed my mum terribly. This song is a great reminder that they have moved on to a world 'without boundaries.'

  • Many have said they don't understand the meaning of this song. It think it's probably about anything you may have ever loved and lost - a home, parent, friend or spouse.

The music speaks volumes of a loss that even the words cannot express.

  • has always found this song the ultimate "military brat" song (I was an Army one, John Denver was an Air Force one). The loneliness, the reality of moving so often, the reality, yes, of loss. And death. "Empty the ashtrays, sweep up the floor" was a quartermaster requirement upon leaving one's military quarters...

  • my interpetaion of this song is of someone being lost, things not being as you think thay should be..something missing with time going on and on after a death. " a map of the whole world without boundries" is also symbolic of vastness, something uncontained, lacking direction. 'a home without doors or windows to go in"- could be a place of love and warmth one cannot get back to--we don't live here no more.. a beautifully sad song.thanks again....

  • @atomatoface Thank you.

  • @atomatoface The ultimate military brat song, nothing that compares. The loneliness, the reality of it all. It's there...

  • also one of my fav jd songs. Yes Farewell Andromeda is an under-rated album. Oh God how many of us miss this man and his music. May he be resting in peace.

  • @atomatoface .. . ME !! Everyday x I'm sure a good heart, and good deeds will assure him a place in heaven :)

  • Thank you for this performance. It's always been my favorite JD song and have never heard it live. Breathtaking. Farewell Andromeda is an under-rated album.

John Denver and his music, are a national treasure.

  • @thetruthwillsetufree Thank you too.

  • It is simply lovely....and brings me to tears every time I am listening.....

Thanks once again dear friend for posting another wonderful "happening"....

    love and hugs

  • @BiancaAmanda1 Thank you Bianca. You are always welcome.

  • @BiancaAmanda1 me too!!! My favourite weepie x x

  • This has always been my most favorite song that John has ever sung, then Rhymes and Reasons. Both deal very directly with life and death. The matterfactness of it. No big show, no big deal. I was thinking of both my parent's death at the beginning of this year and how "We don't live here no more" honestly fits in to the truth: We just aren't here at the house, on this plane of existance, but no need to weep...we are all part of something greater." That's what this song means to me.

  • @ceresmary206 Many thanks for your kind comment about this wonderful song. You are always welcome.

  • @ceresmary206 . . .Very poignant words. .on today , of all days. 14 years ago I cried tears of sorrow , at the passing of my all time favourite singer. Today, I still shed a tear for a legend!! This beautiful song means more to me as I get older.

  • I love this song....but I don´t understand what it means.

  • @mentapoleo It is about the constant moving that Denver had to do as an Air Force brat - during his youth!!!!!!

  • @Earthlinked Well, the song was written by Bill Danoff but sure could tell the story of JD as an AF brat!! So I am sure JD loved it when Danoff showed it to him!! The last few lines of the third verse are awesome!!!! They give me chills!! WOW!!! One of those lines that say SO much!!!!

Dream of a time when the tides ebbing now rise again.

Then you will know that to die is not really to end.

Living and dieing are both your most intimate friends.

  • Ive looked for this song for years thank you

  • @Sosnowieca I'm really glad you like it. It was always one of my favourite JD songs.

  • just beautiful

  • ....so, so nice!!!
