too much wrist all the time!.... wristy fills are grooves are cool but I have been waiting to hear you put you're whole arm and back into a stroke. if you are serious about someone helping you with technique I will be real nice about it and help you out.
its his drum set, remember that. just because its not your preference of tuning, size, or brand doesent mean its no good. i dont like DW, and i dont like haveing my drum set up that small, but if he likes the way it sounds and he can still have fun with it, then i say let him do his thing.
from the videos of yours I've seen you seem to be a very talented drummer, especially self taught. you dont seem to fall back on the same thing a lot which is what I tend to do being self taught as well. keep it up!
Ive been watching your videos. you are a good drummer. I think if you smoothed out your doubles you;d kill it more. rllr repeat is great for that. Any chance that moonglow kit for sale?
thanks for the kind words. as am totally self taught and prob have a lot of bad habits i have always wanted someone to analyse my playing and say what needs to be done to hone it a bit, so thanks for that i'll give it a go... yep the gretsch is defo my fave of them all but would be willing to sell for the right price...
Finally drums that sound like, well, drums! I hate when people put their laundry in the bass drum and make smilies out of moongels on their toms.
I like my drums wide open too. In fact, I use coated G1's on both sides of my bass drum. No port, nothing inside. It sounds like thunder and is heard clearly when playing unmiked with my rock band. I don't want my drums to sound like the cardboard boxes they came in.
bang on ! good to hear, most people who make comments seem to only want to emulate everyone else with beach ball bubble gum drum sounds with no concept of 'other' real tunings...
@Patate2112 The reason why drummers usually have portholes is because if they are in a band that is doing gigs and is a big venue they need the drums to be miced and putting a mic up against a skin with no port hole sounds crap... I think people need to understand the science of how putting padding in the bassdrum alternates the sound because I've seen people who just pack their bassdrum... and I've only got one pillow in there just to give it a good thud but also give it some room to breathe
Oh man. I Comment this video forever ago and said you tuned your kit like shit. Im Coming bacak now. Looks like im not the only one who thinks that eh? almost every comment ive seen so far is agreeing with me. And you must have a big ass ego i mean "All round super stud Edward Day displays his abilities in this extended rare footage?" wow..
I like it. Virtuosic, but not in the stupid "throw in everything I can as fast as humanly possible" sense that many drummers go for. "Solid" is how I'd describe it, and that's what a drummer is supposed to be, isn't it?
good man. nice to see someone who gets it... rather than "o dude 1 tom, o dude they dont sound like my super damped toneless drums, they must be bad.."
hey now, I know you are kidding but saying steve gadd sucks balls seems a little off the topic and even if you really do think that...he's record on more records than all the people commenting on this will ever record in their lives combined.
on a side note about the playing, solid grooves and I dig the bass/snare/floor tom set up...that's what I've been practicing with lately too. Don't take this the wrong way but maybe try tuning the floor tom a little lower for that perfect, low tom sound;)
@playswithpassion - I agree. I hate it when people bash Gadd. Those people should start by buying Steely Dan's Asia album. Steve can play any style of music and his groove is second to none. Little do they probably know that a lot of drummers borrowed grooves and fills from Steve. Even Neil Peart took a couple fills for the Test for Echo album. And Gadd is one of the top sought after studio drummers of all time.
@theburyboys well, if people want me to be completely honest I will just say it: if you are a drummer who thinks steve gadd sucks and you produce this kind of shit (especially), you need to fucking check yourself cuz he owns the fuck out of you XD
well you are coming from a wealth of experience and clearly own some quality stuff, you really know what your talking about there. you would be off acquiring some knowledge, then slating people, at least then it would have some grounding.. other wise you just come across as an idiot.. think before you insult..
DW's are great, I don't have any problem with them, but I'm a Truth/Shine/Chicago Custom Percussion (Look them up on myspace. They make amazing custom kits for a ridiculously reasonable price.) guy. Like, I'm more about the crazy sizes, really unique looks, and those three companies (CCP in particular) just fit my personality/playing style.
I would recommend you reducing your kit to 2 or 3 toms for like a month or so, try practicing with a smaller kit your technique and your feel for the groove greatly increases cos you have to think more imaginatively on reduced kits.
Cheers, is that really how much it cost? I thought it would cost more. Do you know how much that kit would cost with an exotic finish and die-cast hoops? I'm thinking about getting a DW Collectors' Series Maple Candy Black Fade over Oak Cluster sizes 24x18, 10x7, 14x12 and 16x14, with a 14x7 snare, with die-cast hoops on toms and snare, x shell rack tom. That would probably cost loads though.
yeah only cost a grand i got them second hand of ebay in near new condition. anything involving their exotic finshes aint gonna be cheap i would roughly estimate £4k-£6k. yeah i like 24" bass with 10" toms too they go well...
dude how do u get that dry and punchy sound with your bass drum skins so tight? I can only get a really resonant terrible sound when i tune them like that
hi, well that drum and size all i really do is take the batter skin up high, about 3 - 4 full turns per lug, get it all nice and even, then take the front skin ever so slightly higher. i use no muffling at all and no holes in the front head. use a dw hard beater, but with no falam patch or anything on the head, then just tweeks from lug to lug to get it even... hope that helps...
thanks man it really helped, now I got the sound I wanted, it took me like 2 hours cause I'm not really good at tuning. really nice vid and hats, thanks again man!

Bass drum sounds like cardboard! People spend thou$and$ on nice bass drums but haven't a clue how to tune them. How sad. Might as well use a cheap mahogany drum, or even a box!!
have you ever heard john bonhams bass sound ? surprisingly high tuned and no muffling. some people like sounds beyond mega damped beach balls, i dont. also bear in mind, this is no 'hifi' audio ... last time i checked mahogany was an expensive wood ..
I love the invisible cymbal I really want want one.

Recording drums is an ART.
