The person who wrote this book was a communist Jew. Surprise, surprise, when world war 2 broke out he withdrew the book because he feared it would convince Americans not to support the war against Germany. Some people even wrote him about being opposed American involvement and he responded by giving them up to the FBI. The writer is just against some wars, when they don't benefit him.
It must be hell to live like that...I mean he has no legs, arms mouth or anything. He`s just a moving piece of meat. This movie has to be the best saddest movie I ever seen.
@Marjoyyh1 they know hes alive but he cant speak or anything so they dont know wat he wants obv if i was a doctor id kill him its cruel leaving him like that
@motordeo everyone in this world should see this movie just to know that every time they feel pain that the only way it can get so bloody bad to the point it cant get any worse is this
to me this is true "oblivion" and my biggest fear in this entire world
@Venom1246 Unless, he found a way to cope inside his own mind. And communicate with doctors. It would be suffering either way, but can you imagine if he WANTED to live? And someone decided for him, to pull the plug? Laying there in bed, unable to communicate, begging to be allowed to live, but no one hearing his pleas..... It really goes both ways. In real life, I think people should do whatever they can to find a way to communicate. Remember Helen Keller?
I could not live like this, i could never see a family member live like this, i could never see anyone live like this, why would they let someone live like this!!!!???
i dont see why they would want to keep him alive if he has no arms, legs, hearing, cant talk and cant see. it would suck to live like that. id rather want to die
@gangman42 they only kept him alive because they thought he was in a coma but i know what you meen so would die. but the worst thing is he cant contact the doctors .
I would even dare to say that it is an instinct. Uncontrollable. That is what makes us human. That is what makes us a life form part of the whole living on Earth.
Well leshager, seeing as it's been around a month (a little late for your reply) don't you think i would have found out it was because of metallica (besides i couldnt even find a torrent for this before i posted my comment)
this really makes you go insane once give it a thought... I got cold sweat running over me after watching this short cut out. It's too much of a psychological pressure to bear. By far the MOST depressing and frightening movie I have ever known. I mean from the psychological perspective. Oppressing.
I just read the news about this man named Rom Houben who lived like Johnny, complitely paralized for 23 years, while the doctors thought he was in a coma..
He said "'I screamed, but there was nothing to hear"... poor guy :-(
what's more extreme is that these guys were completey hoodwinked by the concept of warefare! no inet access, primitive information exchange, war was a rosy picture on the face of it, and governments of many nations made a superb job of it!
I could not agree with you more. Ironically nothing has changed today - government promotion of war feeding people with invisible threat. Pure war mongering nothing more. It's a cynical joke which George Carlin (let his soul rest in peace) made but it is so true ''We like wars. You know why we like wars? Because we're good at it'' by G.C.
Gotten rid off one problem the 'big men' created another one. It is no good today anyways, neither it was then... Yup, I admit that we can search out a lot of pluses today but at what cost these benefits (if I may say so) humans earned? That's another question.
yea, nowadays we can be more refined about the implementation of 'force'. Presumembly we can be safe sitting in the 'green zone'. How you would coordinate a multipolar world - in a realm where politicalisation is the linchpin of diverse motivations - can surely only be recognised through these horrible histories. However, you will always get those who want to get their face dirty, no matter what cost!
@Valdinsh I watched this as a young kid on T.V once, this clip, and it really disturbed me. But I think.... Personally, after enough time, it would be possible to come to terms with it. I read about a girl named Hellen Keller, who grew up blind and deaf (a real woman), and she learned to communicate and write, even finding joy and happiness in life. I believe there is almost always hope, and it bugs me (not that you were saying this) when I hear people talking about just, giving up. :(
there is a scene in the movie "saving private ryan" where a soldier gets hit in the face by a shrappnell at the beginning on omaha beach. he is the radio operator. i think that is the way johnnys face looks like.
but in the end, it is not necessary to know how ot looks
Hurry mother hurry hurry hurry and wake me up. I'm having a nightmare mother where are you? Hurry mother. I'm down here. Here mother. Here in the darkness. Pick me up.
that did happened. In Germany there were after the war so called silent hospitals, in which vets were housed. These vets couldn´t live outside. Not only because of their own pain, but because it was not possible to show the public these gruesome injuries. Another story here in a near village they knew bout one vet, that also as "Johnny" had no limbs and face. He just had a hole where his mouth was. And that guy screamed all the day. They just gave him morphine. He lived in one of these dark places
In the story he has no face anymore, no eyes, ears or anything, his face is a crater. And in 1972 they probably did not have the special effects to show anything like that.
However, in the book it says that he has the bandage over his face as well. Joe theorizes that this is so the doctors and nurses won't have to see what remains (or doesn't) of his face. The film is fairly close to the book as it was written and direct by Dalton Trumbo who also authored the novel.
I think that having shown his 'face' in the movie wouldn´t have been the scariest part. In fact there are no scenes including blood etc.
But what makes it scary is his state of being alive/dead..of not being able to see or feel the difference between thought, dream, reality, night, day,,..He´s basically just lying there in complete darkness all by himself which is driving him insane.
yeah i read about it but this guy cant see talk smell or ear, most of the people with that syndrome see smell ear and those kind of stuff they just dont move
while he was hiding in a hole in world war 2 he got hit bye a mortar so he lost all feeling, all of his face including his eyes mouth nose ears, his ability to speak and all of his limbs and the thing of his face is a mask to keep you from seeing his face i dont think you'd want to see that...
listen to one by metalica, and read Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It's hardcore anti-war, and it's brilliant. Any possible chance of me joining the army is gone.
He has neither any arms nor legs, and in the book it is said that he attempts to roll on his belly to suffocate himself by blocking his tracheotomy, but fails.
he was hit by a mortar shell during WWI. he lost all of his limbs, face and all senses except feel. doctors keep him alive for the purposes of science thinking he's braindead, but he's not.
You have to feel sorry for this guy I mean he lost his face, senses, limbs, practically everything. If someone were to laugh at this, then I would like to tell them this: Put yourself in his place. Being kept alive like a freak at some twisted carnival show. The nurse was actually nice enough to try and kill him, but the general wants him still alive. Why would they still want him alive is what I would like to know.
Thats not the point of the book or even the movie at all. The point is that the military finds it cheaper to attempt to repair a soldier than to train a new one.
Pisses me off that they don't kill him. Metallica did a good job portraying this movie. War is cruel, but it is impossible to avoid. Peace in one place is hell in another. The world has no balance point.
I was inspired to track down this movie after seeing The Diving Bell and the Butterfly last night. It's a French-made film (subtitles) based on the biographical account of a guy who'd suffer a stroke and could only communicate with his left eye. Excellent movie.
This movie really makes you think... not just about war, but about life in general. We get mad at stupid stuff that doesn't even matter, and we don't know how good we've got it. We could be stuck in a lifetime of absolute hell like this guy, yet we take for granted what we already have. This movie really makes me stop and think before I get mad at something that doesn't really matter, and remember how good we've really got it.
ive been searching for this movie all over and i just found out that the university im at has this movie in vhs at the library! cant wait to see it, seems pretty thought-provoking
This movie/book could make anyone feel better about their life. Cause nothing in the world is worse than being a living chunk of meat. It's even worse than being a vegetable.
Why would they keep someone alive when the landmine has taken their sight, taken their speech, taken their hearing, taken their arms, taken their legs, taken their soul, left him with life in hell?
Some guy gets hit by an artillery shell in the war and is left as a torso. He lost his arms, legs, hearing, sight and most of his face. He's essentially a social experiment.
i read the book this summer and cant wait for the new version of the movie next year. this might be the scariest story i could imagine. and what makes it even worse is to consider how many times this has probably happened.
No dude One is not about Cliff Burton The other guys r right its about this moive. Lokk at the lyrics... Cliff burton died in a bus accident and the lyrics have nuthing to do with tht.
if somthing like that happens to me I would rather fuckin be dead case all those cocksuckin activist say its a sin to kill someone in that state i got news for them. a god that alows them to do something like that is a sick god or there sick for doin it
i read a book bout this movie with da exact title and its bout the guy who stepped on a land mine and lost his legs arms and his face but still lives, man thats amazin yo thas crazy
actually, the Metallica song "One" is based on the death of their bassist, and sorry about marking you as spam colmMICHEAL, I meant to press reply lol.

This movie/book could make anyone feel better about their life. Cause nothing in the world is worse than being a living chunk of meat. It's even worse than being a vegetable.

being a vegetable isn't all that bad <.<

And if the doctors killed him, it would be a murder charge.
